Hasnt had too many opportunities, but in the NFL you have to make do with what is provided. That fumble looks to have cost him his returning (punt) duties and his inability to fight for the first down also will limit his opportunities as a third down back.

It was always going to be tough, he just needs to continue improving. It is his debut season game. You would hope that he never does those things again.

He is just about gone I reckon... at least with the 49ers...

The coach put his balls on the line tonight....

Luckily for him they still won the game....

Didn't see the game but followed along on twitter. Assuming Bush is out next week, do we think he will keep his #2 RB spot?

Haha. Crazy how you f**k up one thing and then get shafted. Cut throat.

It is actually really lucky that Bush got injured so Hayne got chances to show that he wasn't totally out of place. Specialist punt/kick returners have certainly been cut before for one mistake.

Will be interesting to see if Davis climbs over him at #2 RB next week.

You don't want to overreact...

But you would think Hayne is in cut territory at the moment.

With Ellington already on the roster it's really hard to justify carrying Hayne in the 53 let alone the game day 46.

Your basically using a roster spot to carry a back up PR and 4th string RB.

If Tomsula has any cojones he will give Hayne a chance to make amends next week as starting PR and see if this game was just a blip.

We would take him at the Raiders though...

Did he play OK apart from the big f**k up? He's caught balls before so common sense would suggest it's just a blip. But if he can't handle the step up to the real season then I guess that's that. He was probably due to come crashing down to earth given how well he went in the trial games.

Main reason Ellington came on to PR that time was the bizarre choice by the Vikings to accept the 5 yard penalty and punt again. Hayne had just caught a punt and made a tough 10yd return. Rather than have him on there puffing, they put on a fresh PR. Not that it would have worn Hayne out doing 1 catch / 10 yd return - but it was good coaching to put out someone fresh & different in that situation.

Hayne stuffed up by trying to make that catch. No doubt he will do it again.

I'd be more concerned about the charged down FG and massive return off that blunder than a bad choice about whether to catch or let it bounce.

For Hayne's sake, I hope Bush being injured will buy him 2-3 weeks to make up for the fumble and solidify himself on the active roster. If Bush didn't get hurt then he would be looking at being inactive next week but instead he got a chance to do a couple of things backing up Hyde.

But the point was that Ellington was competent enough to start as the returner...

Hayne position in the squad is predicated on him providing value to the roster... If you have an active WR also capable of returning punts then it doesn't make sense to carry Hayne... When you can carry a much better RB.

It's a good point.

I can see Hayne developing into a slot receiver specialist. He has got to be able to run the ball to create the option to get the passes, but with his ability to evade and get open in tight spaces he could be very effective. I don't see him as a battering ram RB. He was certainly an OK pressure-valve for Kapernick today.

Does anyone back the Vikings taking that punt again in that situation? Or decline?
