Two men to face drug charges — 27.02.2015
The Crime and Corruption Commission (CCC) has this evening issued one person with a Notice to Appear in Court and earlier today obtained a warrant for the arrest of another person who is currently overseas.
These arrests are related to the CCC’s ongoing investigation that is focused on a cocaine trafficking syndicate operating in South East Queensland.
The CCC will allege these two individuals were identified contacting the syndicate and allegedly arranging for the supply of cocaine for personal use or to on-supply cocaine to friends and colleagues between June 2014 and November 2014.
A 33-year-old man from Palm Beach was served with a Notice to Appear in Court to face two counts of Supply Dangerous Drug contrary to section 6 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986. He is expected to appear in the Southport Magistrates Court on 9 March 2015.
The CCC has also today obtained an arrest warrant for a 28-year-old man who is currently overseas. It is expected this warrant will be executed on the 28-year-old man upon his return to Australia. This is a standard law enforcement practice.
The arrest warrant relates to ten counts of Supply Dangerous Drug contrary to section 6 of the Drugs Misuse Act 1986.
The CCC has previously stated (
see previous media releases) the focus of this investigation is a cocaine trafficking syndicate operating in South East Queensland. The CCC’s investigation is not focused on any potential broader drug use in sport.
The CCC understands a number of organisations and individuals have been the subject of speculation that they are possible targets of this ongoing CCC investigation.
The CCC has decided it is in the public interest to confirm that based on evidence currently available to the CCC, it does not expect to make any further arrests of current or former sportspeople as a result of its ongoing investigation into the cocaine trafficking syndicate.
However, consistent with all law enforcement investigations, if new information comes to hand in relation to the syndicate under investigation the CCC may consider further arrests.
The CCC will provide no further comment on this ongoing investigation while related matters are before the court. The CCC will not confirm or deny the names of the individuals.
