Jesse Royal and Matt White told to look elsewhere.

Brian Smith continues his policy of releasing every player at the club except Gidley Mullen and Simpson. What was the point in spending all this time in developing Royal and White only to let them go when they turn into first grade players? Why are Snowden and seu seu playing for Cronulla?

Snowden in particular baffles me, he was one of the most dominant juniors to come through the lower grades in a long time. I assume he wasn't on huge money still had a year to go on his contract and Brian Smith tells him to look for a new club just as he makes first grade why? oh jeez sorry Kade but we need that 100k to give to cameron Ciraldo look elsewhere please.

I remember thinking last year that all the players we'd got rid of were being replaced by betters.

If Boomer, Perry, Tighe and Snowy aren't better than sh*thouston, Wicks, Wes and Ciraldo i'll eat my hat.

White i don't mind seeing the back of him.

Royal will be a loss. Im guessing Smithy is putting all his eggs in one basket concerning our forward pack next year.

Timmy and Cross better be willing to stand up.

So who do we have?

Cross - very good
Tolar - Good
Fa'aso - decent
Tuafua - decent but could be good in time
Wicks - poor
Fineuaki - starting to look decent
Asa - ugly and fierce looking, but soft
Timmy - could be good with game time

Apart from them we are looking at Simmo, House - and after that we are looking at Dobbins, Joel Edwards, and Tovo stepping up from NYC.

I'd sack Asa and maybe give Schillings some time in the trials - but looking at the lists - i think we have prop covered.

Sad to hear they arent wanted. Especially Royal who has improved out of sight, youd think theyd want to hold on to him.

Depth is gonna be a bit of a concern next year.

Cross didn't look out of place at SOO level, so better than "very good" imho. We just need some injury-free footy out of him at club level. Tolar will never be top class but he's solid and extremely reliable. Fa'aso can win or lose a match, archetype impact player, if he can ever cut out the handling errors and occasional defensive lapses will be one of our key weapons. Taufua already looks the goods in defence, hopefully the attacking potential Pika has spied will develop. Wicks isn't hopeless, just hugely overpriced. He'll be a decent impact player and still has the potential to be a gamebreaker (wouldn't bet on it though). Never seen Natusch but I get the impression Smith thinks he's up to NRL. It's also important to remember that Simmo and Houston can play frontrow.

If everyone's contract was coming up, I would hope that Royal would be among the first signed. As it stands I think the club's making the right decision. He's been our best prop this year, but I don't think he makes a massive difference to the team's performance. What we'll really need next year is some injury-free footy from Ben Cross.

Feel sorry for Royal though. He hasn't only proven himself an NRL player but he's better than most. He deserves a good contract. Really hope he lands one somewhere.

This is pretty sh*tty news for Jesse but I think his advanced years coupled with his relative lack of experience may have counted against him in Smiths plans.

KNIGHTS SHED FRONT-ROW DUO

Off contract props Jesse Royal and Matt White are searching for new clubs after Newcastle Knights management confirmed yesterday that they would not be retained at the end of the season.
knights strategic-development keith Onslow has been negotiating for weeks with Daryl Mather, who manages both Royal and White, but said yesterday that the club had decided to release them.
"Daryl wanted a definitive answer so that he could explore other options,"Onslow said.
'I spoke to [coach] Brian and the decision was that we'd have to let them go.Unfortunately,we don't have alot of room to move under the salary cap and we felt that front row was one position we already have covered.'
Onslow said the club still had enough funds available to hopefully sign bulldogs youngster Arana Taumata and possibly another outside back.
Royal, who had played 25 NRL games for Newcastle before injuring his knee recently,is understood to be agood chance of linking with the Warriors.
White who has played the past two games in first grade and made a total of 23 NRL games since his NRL debut, needs to perform strongly in coming weeks to attract the interest of other clubs.

That my friends is why smithy is the undisputed heavyweight champion of coaches that players don't want to play for. Time to go Brian and if we lose today it is game over for him if the club are fair dinkum. Playing well is one thing. Winning is another.

Interesting, another outside back.

I honestly don't know what's available though that would be decent.
