This is the first time something like this has been reported in rugby league. It is not the first time it has happened elsewhere. It is not unique to one sport and it is the fault of an individual, not the whole sport - be it league, union, afl, cricket or danish long ball.
But it's not the first time a vile and disgusting incident has been reported in the code let alone this year.

That's a very black and white way of looking at it. Do you think all sports have a culture problem? You must because all sports have had to deal with issues like this and much worse.
What do you think it is then? Why do you think it keeps happening? Why do you think PR people have so much trouble with the clubs? How much do you think gets swept under the carpet?

Seriously mate, you are listing up things to the extreme. We are never going to rub out the scandals, and quite frankly I don't follow the game to find out about Matty Johns' sex life. That's something for him and his family to sort out. If I cared about that sort of stuff I'd watched soapies and buy New Idea. I really just love the game for what happens on the field.
You disagree or don't acknowledge any of that has happened? On a regular basis?

Up to you of course, but imo you shouldn't listen so much to the knockers. Perhaps turn off the tabloid stuff for a while.
I listen to the negatives because I don't limit myself to my own little rose coloured world.

The NRL and clubs have a set of standards and they'll deal with that crap.

What standards? The NRL and player behaviour standards? Seems like a paradox to me...

Most of us here are and will be life long fans. What he's talking about isn't about us. It's about sponsors thinking twice about putting money into the sport. It's about the parents of a future superstar deciding between putting him in league, or afl or soccer.

That's why these scandals are so important and why all the stakeholders involved, the nrl, the clubs and the players themselves need to work harder.

We're not asking or expecting players to behave perfectly, to never put a foot out of line. Players will occasionally say silly things, or get in a bit of a fight in a bar, these things happen. But when it comes to the extreme things, we have to aim for them never to happen again, the standard should be set at "perfection". No nrl player should ever hit a woman again, rape a woman, have sex with animals, or be corrupt in anyway. Doing those kinds of things (or being involved at all, like taking a photo) are inexcusable and those kinds of things should have a ironclad 1 strike and your out permanently policy.
Exactly... Not sure why it is so hard for people. You know what the image of our game is in Brazil, Netherlands, Germany, Thailand, Singapore, the United States etc etc. Joel Monaghan... First impressions last.

lol.

Isn't South Africa listed as the one of the most violent countries in the world?

Perhaps we should take a leaf out of their books.
Or how about we look at Brazil who is a noted party nation... What about the Canadians who felt it was worth printing? Are they violent? France? In the City of Love?

They get paid f**kloads of money and part of their job description is to represent the code and promote it by default.

If I disgraced my employer I'd be sacked on the spot and rightly so.

Yeah, no.

If everyone who had done something stupid or disgraceful whilst not at work was sacked by their employer, we'd all be on the dole. I've been to buck's nights where this thing would have been considered tame

Don't talk crap.

These blokes are put there, they don't put themselves there. How many players do you see coming out in the press demanding they be considered role models?

They've f**ked up in the past, they'll f**k up in the future and there's nothing that can be done about it apart from making sure they understand the ramifications and consequences of actions like this one.

Ending his career should not be an option. Kicking him in the arse, giving him an extended holiday, fining him, yes, making him do charity work, sure, ending his NRL career, no. But of course, that's exactly what will happen.

I blame the NRL, they try too hard to make every player seem like a super nice bloke that will help old ladies cross the street and all that stupid sh*t.
Now mothers all over the world will think blokes like Hodges will actually say hi to their sons.

The NRL have to ensure that they have a good image because if they don't our media friends will be all over them like a pitbull on a poodle. Not saying its right but its reality.

No, the NRL should promote a positive image, but they should really have players volunteer for the role of promoting that kind of image rather than having the same old dickheads pop up in campaigns and ads etc.
It really saves a lot of trouble when something like this happens and everyone can just agree that the bloke is just a dickhead and move on, rather than the usual 'But I thought he was such a nice person'! crap that all the worried and stupid parents have.

If I had my way, Monaghan wouldn't suffer any consequences.

But of course, the wowsters are screaming blue murder.

People on here damn the newspapers. But make no mistake. You guys are only outraged because the paper says you should be.

No dickhead, I didn't need a newspaper to tell me he should be flicked. What would you do if you had an 8yr old son and he saw his idols doing things like that?

If my son was 8 years old and he saw it, I'd probably wonder if my parenting skills needed honing.

That's pretty much what I just said
