Top post and 100% agree.

thanks dude!

god people why are u spending ur time googling to see if it comes up in other countries? WHO CARES?

i'm all for a discussion on how it will affect the image of the game in Australia, NZ and England but....Switzerland?! they probably think it's rugby union.

most people in the world don't even know there IS a different rugby code.

massive overreaction. should be cleared to play NRL next season.

besides, any publicity is good publicity. think, people in india and switzerland now know of the NRL

So what you're saying is that we've been missing out on the dog sucking dick market and this is a good move to get them to see our game?

i think we should ammend it to "almost any publicity is good publicity"

During the 1970's and 1980's England suffered from the scourge of football hooliganism and crowds at football games dropped alarmingly. Yet during this time, football was plastered over the front and back pages of the media and featured on virtually every newscast. Which sort of disproves "any publicity is good publicity".

There are SOME things that people just don't like. Getting glassed is one. Knowing their friends f**k children or animals might well be others.

You only have to look at attendences to Catholic Churches to know where people stand on the kiddy fiddler issue. It hasn't helped their attendances much has it?

If we are suddenly swamped next season with people from India and Switzerland sitting in the stadiums saying "where are the dick sucking doggies" please feel to dig up this post and remind me of it.

What a weird world we live in
im not for a second condoning this and given the circumstances and the world we live in, he simply has to be sacked and de-registered but what a strange world we live in

a stupid prank, in which there were no real victims bar the man accused of the act, an act in which no law was broken is deemed worse in society than assaulting women, drink driving, sexual assault etc al... This man is now the laughing stock of the sporting world, we have had druggies, people who belt their partners, drink drivers, high speed police chasers, sexual assaults and yet a bloke who in a drunken prank has a dog tend to his neither regions, he's the guy that gets international condemnation, he's the guy that should be sacked and banned for life. But thats the world we live in, he knew it when he committed the act, so its hard to have sympathy for him, but its a very very strange way our society scales it outrage

weird and i dont get it... and joel monaghan will be another victim (albeit a self inflicted one) of a very screwed up social outrage system

Maybe Mona's should in act the GI defense and claim he was doing it to protect the dog from self harm, or the G.Bird defense and say it was accidental, maybe he should have played the Johns defense and claimed Bi Polar... seems the last thing he should have done was put his hand up and accept the ramifications of his stupid, disgusting albeit not illegal or malicious or even cruel act

The * left a woman to be taken to hospital. As no crime could be proven there is no penalty.

Other cases have had enough evidence for rape charges to be laid. As no crime could be proven there is no penalty.

Dane Tilse was deregistered without a charge being laid.

Other groups of players have had incidents hushed up - the highest profile example being Matthew Johns & the other players involved.

In comparison, this sick prank by Monaghan is nothing. There is no victim, no crime, no charges and no details beyond a lurid photo. Certain posters here claim to have more details - but this seems to be bullsh*t.

most people in the world don't even know there IS a different rugby code.

Hopoate was reportedly 'immortalised in a Hollywood film starring Alec Baldwin and Matthew Broderick.' [Link]

Called The Last Shot, the movie has a scene where actors makes mention of the incident.

Quote from the American writer-director Jeff Nathanson:

In the scene Tony Shaloub, who plays an eccentric mobster, is watching a game on TV and begins ranting about how a player was banned for sticking his fingers in other players' rear ends.

''You'll notice Tony Shaloub is always watching some obscure sporting event, some weird thing like bowling, so it was something to do,'' Nathanson said.

''Then I decided to give him a speech about rugby and thought it would be odd.''

----------------
Also, I am certain I read an opinion piece written in the states where the writer repeatedly refers to it as rugby. Not that I mind, we are a rugby football code after all (the better), but it does highlight the lack of understanding from overseas writers.

No such luck for AFL when Peter Filandia decided to chomp on another player's balls - he was always referred to as 'Australian rules footballer' in international publications.

Yet we've had a bloke who smashed a glass into his partners face 'accidentally' represent our country since that event, we've had a player who belted his partner to 'save her from self harm' represent our country since that act, we've had a bloke with a criminal history as long as his tattooed arm collect a ton of money and just about every individual accolade achievable on his way to an Australian jumper, post his litany of offenses. One of the games leading personalities admitted to drug use almost his entire career... his brother hosts several shows on a rival network after cheating on his wife in a gang bang... the list goes on

But Monaghan... the guy who got drunk and had a dog lick his balls as a prank, he's the guy we really need to make an example of... what a very strange society we live in

I've been meaning to make a similar post but haven't bothered to.

At the end of the day, all Monaghan was doing was having a laugh. The dog wouldn't have really suffered in this(I'm doubting it was there for more than 5 seconds), it doesn't know or care what a bloke's c**k is. I'm sure the dog is not suffering any mental anguish, and Monaghan wasn't actually using it to get off or anything. I would've judged Monaghan more if there was a video of him kicking the dog, which I highly doubt would have got the same uproar in the media. What he did was strange, but harmless.

But as you said, this is a problem because of the way the world is. As a result, what would have been a harmless joke if it had not gone outside the player group is now a career-ending scandal.

Moronic thing for Monaghan to do, but it doesn't make me think he's a bad bloke, and I certainly don't think he's some vicious criminal like others would have you believe. I think Rover will be just fine.

It hasn't been harmless to the Raiders who had sponsors threaten to pull a Million dollars of money from the club nor for the NRL who have had to contend with negative publicity not only in this country but internationally. Add to this the TV rights being up for sale next year and the lack of injury to the dog doesn't matter too much.

Monaghan maybe a good bloke but that isn't really a defence for bad behavior anymore

So the Raiders will probably be forced to sack him to save their sponsorship arrangement. That's punishment enough IMO along with the "dogf**ker" tag he'll doubtless carry for the rest of his career. Sure he doesn't deserve to get away scott free, but a bit of perspective is called for when people start calling this the worst thing ever to happen in the game and calling for life bans.

I agree however there has to be a ban of some sort in line with the adverse publicity he has brought upon the code.

I don't see it as necessary really, as I doubt anyone will sign him for next year anyway. Well apart from the Sharks and Parra perhaps...

Hi El long time no hear.

I was replying to a poster who suggested that Monaghan should not be banned and the point I was making was that having a player involved in this sort of behavior in the comp might mean that tv networks are unwilling to pay as much for the rights. Hope this clears it up for you mate.

Oh yeah Dickhead !

They are extremely public figures and like it or lump it kids look up to them which is the very defination of a role model.

Any kid that needs a footballer to be a role model is a victim of poor parenting. Your parents are role models, your uncles/aunties are role models. Not sports stars.

They did ask to be a role model because being a proffessional athlete is what they've chosen to do!

Athletes aren't role models though (except to their own kids). They never have been, and never should be. Parents need to start teaching kids things themselves instead of saying "Don't do what I do, do what they do" - while pointing to the athlete on the screen.
