Wow.... What a backward thinking philosophy on promoting this game. People want to make it an international game. Judging by the countless threads on international expansion and improvement you do. Of course it f**king matters what other countries think of the code. People want more money coming into the code. Yet the first image sponsors and new fans get of this code is one of the games best players with his genitalia in a dogs mouth. It's entirely negative publicity in multiple countries. There are no positives from this. None. And the more incidents that occur the more likely this code won't expand into big markets such as Asia and Europe.
You seem to often miss the point cheffy. No one is against promoting the name internationally.

What you do is worry about what other nations think about a game they know nothing about. It's classic cultural cringe stuff, and an emotional response.

Do you think the USA or UK care about what Australia or New Zealand says about their crooked players and hooligans? Of course they have their code of conduct, just as the NRL has - they deal with it. But do they give a tinker's cuss about what you think? No.

Rugby League is made up of individuals with most trying to work together. Individuals sometimes do stupid things while the rest get on with the job. Some individuals do great things. Intelligent people understand this.

I don't think every English soccer supporter is a hooligan, or every Pakistan cricket player is fixing matches, or every American football player should be in jail, or every AFL player is biting someone's testicles. But you'd have us believe that Australian Rugby League and it's supporters are answerable to every country in the world because of the dumb actions of a few individuals. Can you see how stupid that is?

Fair dinkum, just when I thought the cultural cringe was a thing of the past.

And good post from Raider_69. Monaghan did something that for most people is unimaginable. But we've seen worse. Unfortunately, it seems that morality is the driving force to have him banned. He's gone, that's for sure. But is he being booted for the right reasons?

Is that in line with population increases? It's nice to say something increased compared to years past, but unless you take into account population growth it means nothing. In fact by percentage, attendances have dropped off for the past fifteen years as compared to population growth according to the last Australian census:

That's actually a very good point - but it fails to take into account the whole story.

When you take population into account you have to look at WHERE immigrants are coming from and which States they're moving to. Are these are Queensland or NSW stats or are they Nationwide? If Nationwide, what percentage are going to non League States?

Also where are the immigrants coming from? If they're coming from non Rugby League playing areas ie Auckland or Hull then it will take some time for them to come to understand Rugby League and get involved. Sometimes it's not until the second or third generation that people start to really embrace the Country in which they live and the cultures contained there.

Immigration is at it's highest level ever and the vast majority aren't coming from a Rugby League dominated background and wont be looking at Rugby League immediately. This means that with the exception maybe of television games immigration should be kept OUT of the equasion as it would only skew the figures anyway.

So the increase in participation levels is coming from existing populations and it's still increasing. That is actually positive.

The real question is what sort of uptake of Rugby League is there among second or third generation Australians? If it's strong then we're in a good position, because it means people coming here now will have kids and grandkids that will grow up with the game and learn to embrace it.

Yet we've had a bloke who smashed a glass into his partners face 'accidentally' represent our country since that event, we've had a player who belted his partner to 'save her from self harm' represent our country since that act, we've had a bloke with a criminal history as long as his tattooed arm collect a ton of money and just about every individual accolade achievable on his way to an Australian jumper, post his litany of offenses. One of the games leading personalities admitted to drug use almost his entire career... his brother hosts several shows on a rival network after cheating on his wife in a gang bang... the list goes on

But Monaghan... the guy who got drunk and had a dog lick his balls as a prank, he's the guy we really need to make an example of... what a very strange society we live in

I agree with this totally... What Monaghan did was a disgrace but is being blown out of proportion.. No one was hurt and no one was endangered.. He has to live with the shame and that is punishment enough.

It's an interesting question. I have to agree with alot of the sentiment of what Raider 69 said on this matter. What he did was stupid, and highly embarrassing both for him and his club but it's the pressure from sponsors that will cause him to lose his job.

I talked about this at work yesterday and we discussed the simulated vs in the mouth issue and most people said it if was a photo prank, then who cares, but if he actually put his thing in there it's akin to rape as he is in the position of knowing better (alcohol aside).

Had the rumour come out without a photo they could have entered into denial and / or played it down as a harmless prank that someone has blown out of all proportion. But we cant do that as the photographic evidence is far too damning.

In other cases (some potentially far worse) where say someone was allegedly bashed or allegedly threatened with a knife or allegedly glassed, or allegedly raped - the players have been allowed to carry on because of a lack of evidence. Denials, changes of stories from the alleged victims or proof of lies on behalf of the victims have all seen players exhonerated or been given the benefit of the doubt. Sponsers haven't felt pressured to play the money card as they have seen the value of the player and have decided to go along with the clubs.

But in Joels case, there is irrefutable proof that he did something rather stupid that he'll have to live with for the rest of his life. Sponsers wont tolerate 100% proof of this and like it or not we can't ignore it even if others have previously gotten away with worse or have been believed to have gotten away with worse.

Agreed, and they are a pious bunch. Very much out in force. But they're not getting it all their own way so their 'disgust' levels tend to increase. Predictable I suppose.

Sing to the tune of Beverley Hillbillies ...

Come 'n listen to a story 'bout a man named Joel
A rugby league player who got a dog to suck his pole
And then one day while out porking little Yvette
His best mate Jeffro posted that photo on the net ...

Well the first thing you know, old Joel's lost his hair
His kin folk said, Joel you gotta move away from here
They said the planet Krypton is the place you oughta be
So he loaded up his spaceship and left the galaxy ...

Well, now it's time to say goodbye to Joel and all his kin
Joel would like to thank you folks for kindly droppin in
You're all invited back again to this locality
But definately no cameras will be allowed in his vicinity ... :music1:

Cheating, drug taking, and physical abuse is an issue that society faces on whole. Bestiality which is essentially what Monoghan engaged in, places him on another level. Please don't compare. What kind of human being thinks getting his genitals licked by a dog is funny? Shame! Not just for Monaghan but the other players no doubt applauding this deplorable act.

And nevermind to the one million + per year worth of sponsors ready to quit the raiders if they don't take proper action.

And if mums don't want their kids playing league, you would have to have your head up your arse pretty far to thing that won't have a flow on effect.

So because one footballer puts his c**k in a dogs mouth, there are actually mothers out there stupid enough to think that her son will soon be doing the same... just because he plays the same sport... ?

A lot of life, (especially women's), comes down to perceived image & reputation.

Mums that might care are the ones that have nice cars or like nice clothing brands etc. So when they say to their peers "I'm just taking Johnny off to his Rugby League game" her friends might think "ewww RL, they are an awful bunch of players/people".

Just like people don't go shop at Payless Shoes (unless you have to), image is a incredibly influential thing. Especially in this superficial modern society. Right now RL doesn't have a very attractive one (to a wide group of people) that's not to say it doesn't have it's fans or lovers of the game.

sh*t like this definitely doesn't help where we COULD be.
