Talk about rose coloured glasses.
Ok.
Rose coloured glasses are basically standard glasses that have been tinted with colouring that is similar that which you'd find on a rose.
Like it or not the players are representatives of their club and the NRL even during the offseason. It doesn't matter if the players don't want to be role models.
Representative and role model are two different things.
If a player screws up then he should be punished. But let the punishment fit the crime.
We seem to want Monaghan to pay for everyone in Rugby League's sins.
He isn't Jesus Christ.
If you were identified with your employer the way NRL players are with the code and their individual clubs and your behavior at the bucks party you mention got out you would be sacked.
No, I wouldn't.
Most of the stuff I've seen over the years that would give Monaghan's faux pas a run for its money has happened whilst out with workmates.
The first job I ever had was with a major carton manufacturer, way back in 1976. Every Friday at their NSW HQ they had porn night which raised money for the social club. Thanks to them the first porn movie I ever saw (well, the first 3 minutes of porn I ever saw until I threw up) was one that involved a Dog (and chickens, pigs etc I was later told) and guess who was running the projector and sourced the films?
The Manager.
You mention players f**king up and understanding the ramifications of their actions. I am sure that all players are educated on the behavior expected of them by their clubs, the NRL and the sponsores. You can try to spin this anyway you want but their is no way in hell that Monaghan's behavior can be spun to make it seem ok to the clubs, the NRL or the sponsores. No amount of charity work will rebabilitate his image. He must be sacked.
We are
all educated to understand that there are ramifications. Kick another kid in the arse at kindy and you sit in the corner for an hour. But we
all f**k up once in a while. Even Mother Theresa was a complete arse at times.
He shouldn't be sacked.
No one is saying what he did was ok, acceptable or otherwise, by the way.
I'm far more outraged by blokes hitting women. My club has a half back who is alleged to have hit his girlfriend. If he did it and is found guilty I'd be more than happy to tell him myself that he'll never set foot on a field again.
Yet the thread about him would be lucky to hit 5 pages.
I'm far, far, far more outraged by that type of behaviour than I am by Monaghan's.
While I understand that other may have done worse that by no means makes his or their behavior any better. No organisation will part with millions of dollars in sponsorship or tv rights to be associated with a player involved in this.
You do know that John Hopoate played again don't you?
The furore will die off, the Footy season will start again and if he plays on the reminders for him will be there every time he runs out onto the field to a chorus of barking and growling. If he is allowed to play on, he'll suffer for it all for all the remainder of his playing days.
Do we really want to crucify this bloke?
