John Sutton? Nah, f**k him...he's not an 'origin player'

Would you be happy with John Sutton as the NSW 5/8 for Game 2?

LIke with pearce ,sutton form against weaker opposition far better then against stronger teams

souths beat
sharks,bulldogs,knights,tigers,raiders,panthers

souths lost to
Roosters,titans,eels,warriors,sea eagles

sutton hasnt really stood up against better opposition , like pearce has to prove it against stronger opposition .

Im not saying he shouldnt be considered , he should be a better chance then pearce .

I thought the op who created this thread was a mod, how come this isn't in the state of origin section?

Anyway back to the original question, he is too inconsistent but still the best thing nsw have at the moment, can't do much worse, him or campese should get the nod over gidley

So did Mitchell Pearce.....

a) Root gaba's girlfriend
b) beat gaba up in 4th grade
c) give gaba a spray one day when gaba was in the crowd and Mitchell playing first grade

I find it funny how people whinge about halves or backs in general that "go missing" ... it tends to happen when your forward pack is getting obliterated.

Then every Australian is an Origin standard player.

Way to miss my point.

I just get tired of hearing sh*t like "oh he dominates in NRL games, but he won't go any good in Origin". What else can a player do other than dominate in the NRL? Isn't that generally the idea if one wants an Origin birth? The prejudging of players before they've been even given a chance just bugs the sh*t out of me, and what's worse, the NSW selectors seem to be the worst at it (with blokes like Blacklock, Campbell, Soward, El Masri, Merritt constantly overlooked because they're "too small" for Origin, or Sutton because he "goes missing", as if there isn't a player in the NRL who doesn't at some point).

Honestly though, if people are arguing that Sutton shouldn't be picked because he "goes missing" at times, consider Trent Barrett: went missing constantly for the Dragons over the years, but always dominated in rep footy, especially Origin (often out of position at halfback too). Or consider Kimmorley: has dominated in the NRL and for Australia, but has always gone missing in Origin.

He wouldn't be in my side because he does not offer a good enough distance kicking game. If Kimmorley is the only option than he will again be isolated easily and we will have as innefective kicking game as Game 1

Personally, I'd like to see Sutton given a go. I don't know what else he has to do. But I could actually understand him being overlooked if it was for a genuine, intelligent reason.

Picking Lyon at 5/8 with Kimmorley is just plain stupid. It was done because the selectors had trouble leaving out some centres. It doesn't matter how "good" they are ... just pick the best and sorry to the rest. Just ask Scott Prince, or Stu McGill.

I strongly believe that if NSW doesn't start selecting this team more strategically, with an eye to the future as well as to the immediate need to win, then the series losses are going to keep coming. With the likes of Prince and Cronk, and a few good forwards coming through for Queensland, they could maintain this dominance for another five years if NSW doesn't find another gear.

I think the wisest thing to do, aside from picking a balanced forward pack (which NSW seems completely incapable of doing) would be to select a master and apprentice in the halves.

Barrett is actually hitting some form, so lining him up aside of a young halfback would make sense.

6. Barrett
7. Peace

I'd be okay with that.

6. Campese/Sutton
7. Kimmorley

I don't like as much, just because Kimmorley seems a little out of sorts ... but still this would be a defensible strategic based on some kind of logic.

Partnering Barrett with Kimmorley, though, just means NSW will still have the same old problem next year - a choice between has-beens or inexperience.

Lyon and Kimmorley just don't make any sense at all and that's why it stings when guys like Sutton and Campese are overlooked. It just shouldn't happen.

Next we're probably going to see Gidley moved into the halves ... it's insane.

Campese should have never been dropped. The next game should have been his fifth Origin ... by the end of this series you'd never think of him as being inexperienced again.

you could do worse then Terry Campese at halfback

trouble with that, is if you pick campese there, you then have to structure the entire team around him. Pick players that will suit his style and make him the focus of the team. Which imo wouldnt be a bad idea but the selectors wouldnt risk that type of thing

And why would they?

JM - Generally you can tell which players do and don't have the characteristics for Origin football. Sutton at this stage doesn't look ready, when he's under pressure he doesn't come up with the right options and that would be magnified in the Origin arena.

I said quite some time ago i wanted him and Pearce as my halves combo...

that the would complement each other beautifully and at least u gat a genuine 5/8

takes the line and can pass at or through the line

i was laughed at!

Actually, Sutton is best under pressure I think. I remember last year when he was threatened to be dropped he came back firing, and almost led Souths back to the finals. However it's been the generally bad coaching regime at Souths under Taylor the past few years that has brought out bad habits imo. In the whole team. It's across the board, which is why you can see so many Souths players FINALLY starting to shine this year eg Champion, Ben Lowe, Sandow, Sutto, Luke, Wesser and the captain Asotasi really seeming to take on leadership.

I sort of agree Sutto should prove himself first before getting that jumper, but when he's on fire he is easily amongst the best and I think if he was given the shot this year he would do well.

Also his kicking game is sometimes a concern, I'm not sure he has much besides the bomb in his arsenal

It's all good speculation....but we are talking NSW selectors.

Expect

1. Gidley
6. Lyon
7. Kimmorley

5-0 Qld

And why would they?

They wouldnt, i said that in the post.
As for why they should take a risk like that.... look no further than the fact we are heading to Suncorp needing to win to avoid an unprecedented 5th straight series lost, i would argue what ever the selectors feel is playing it safe, isnt really working as a safe option. If starring down the barrel of a 5th straight series loss isnt the time to try something different, then i dont know when it is.

If the definition of insanity is trying the same thing over again and expecting different results then the NSW selectors are need to be institutionalised, thats how insane they are
