In the rush to paint Goodes as some kind of evil villain people in the afl media have came out with statements saying stuff like 'Goodes abused a 13 year old girl' 'the way he dragged out this poor girl' and even ' she'd only turned 13 the week before, technically she's still a 12 year old'. He is a summaries of how the situation happened
. Goodes is playing football. Person racially abuses Goodes. Goodes points her out to security to deal with. Goodes continued playing football.
Now if you believed the afl media, Goodes abused her, goodes dragged her onto the ground to be publicly whipped, Goodes led a lynch mob to the poor girls house after the game.
In fact the opposite happened, he showed compassion for the girl in the after effects, he made sure she was educated on why it was wrong and he asked the media to leave the girl alone and for people to show her support.
People say he called her 'the face of racism' but they are taking his words out of context. He said he racism had a face that day and it was a little girl and it saddened him, he then went on to explain that she is only an innocent child and she needs education on why it's wrong and she needs support.
Its far from abusing a little girl like people have made it out to be.
Now people are asking why he didn't goodes abuse eddie like he abused the girl. Well he wasn't actually in the same place as eddie at the time so he couldn't have the same reaction. Its like if someone called you a merkin to your face your going to have a different reaction to if you found out someone called you a merkin when your not around.

Well said!!!

Because I dont have a problem with racism, why should anyone else is also another poor attempt to try to downplay a major issue

I'm not saying that because I don't have an issue with it or that I prefer to focus my energies on relationships with people of different cultures that it shouldn't be an issue for others.

I should probably have added that while I'd prefer to concentrate on having positive relationships with multicultural folks I hate when racism/bigotry manifests itself as something as ugly as The Cronulla Riots, Reclaim Australia etc. Only then do I start to really have massive issues with it. At the other end of the scale is when someone might racially vilify someone on a tram/train, on the street, at the footy etc. Then I would be compelled to stand up and tell them to pull their heads in because I don't want to be around that kind of shit.

The VFL media seem to be on a crusade to paint this all as "VFL is so tolerant, look at Adam Goodes standing up to racism", disregarding the fact that it is the Vfl fans abusing him...

VFL has always had its issues with race, its always been the "White Australia game", and until they acknowledge it and and face it, that will never change.

Yeah, that's a bit naive I think. As Gordon Tallis said about his own upbringing from a white and aboriginal parent "it doesn't matter how much milk you put in coffee people just see coffee."

Maybe if he was treated like all the other white kids that would be a fair comment, but I don't think anyone who remembers their childhood and how biracial aboriginal kids are treated at school could honestly say they think that would have been the case.

Point is, I don't think you can argue fairly that it was simply a matter of him not choosing the white side of his family.

I think my short reply may have be misleading. I was just pointing something out. Goodes in fact was raised by his mother. If I remember correctly he was 4 when his father left the scene.

It was when he did the tv show "Who Do You Think You Are" that he truly embraced his aboriginal side. On a personal level I don't care how he identifies. His choice.

I am Racist........... Seriously I got bashed by a group of Aboriginal blokes in woodridge when I was 15 got put in a comma for 3 days because I was white.....

Sadly That experience has soured my attitude towards Aboriginals... I wish I was a better person and was able to set aside this prejudice but I can't. (I do have Aboriginal friends however and funnily enough they aren't upset at how I feel... I do not hurl racist slurs but I do have a un-warrented feeling of hatred when I see one )

However I think Adam Goodes was well within his rights to call people out for racial Slurs and was within his rights to dance and throw his spear.

But he has to realise it is also people's right to Boo him and it really is not fair to say You are racist for booing me......

Goodluck to him and good on the NRL stars for showing pride in their heritage and being supportive of a fellow sport star.

I got bashed by a group of whiteys in logan. Probably similar circumstances. Does that mean I should hate white merkins???
Shouldnt you hate people that bash people, not people that are black?

At the end of the day the differences between races is largely societal. A tall black guy and a tall white guy share more in common than a short white guy and a tall white guy genetically. So a lot simply comes down to "feels"

Let's look at an absurdly more famous example. Barack Obama barely knew his dad and was raised by his white grandparents but because of living in a society where "the one drop rule" was in practice to discriminate against people who had only a drop of black in them he has considered himself black.

There are very small differences

New analyses of the human genome have established that human evolution has been recent, copious, and regional. Biologists scanning the genome for evidence of natural selection have detected signals of many genes that have been favored by natural selection in the recent evolutionary past. No less than 14% of the human genome, according to one estimate, has changed under this recent evolutionary pressure.

Analysis of genomes from around the world establishes that there is a biological basis for race, despite the official statements to the contrary of leading social science organizations. An illustration of the point is the fact that with mixed race populations, such as African Americans, geneticists can now track along an individual’s genome, and assign each segment to an African or European ancestor, an exercise that would be impossible if race did not have some basis in biological reality.

Racism and discrimination are wrong as a matter of principle, not of science. That said, it is hard to see anything in the new understanding of race that gives ammunition to racists. The reverse is the case. Exploration of the genome has shown that all humans, whatever their race, share the same set of genes. Each gene exists in a variety of alternative forms known as alleles, so one might suppose that races have distinguishing alleles, but even this is not the case. A few alleles have highly skewed distributions but these do not suffice to explain the difference between races. The difference between races seems to rest on the subtle matter of relative allele frequencies. The overwhelming verdict of the genome is to declare the basic unity of humankind

--------

Obviously there is sexual selection and the like at play to explain physical differences. So there are biological markers. Tongans are bigger on average than white people but on a genetic level there isn't a lot going on.

To paraphrase Obama, if he robbed a place in his teens and his mug shot was on the news they wouldn't be mentioning his white half. A taxi that ignores him on the street wouldn't care about his white half.

It is completely understandable if biracial people identify with their minority half more, because that affects their experiences more. That doesn't mean they don't love the white half of their family or that they hate white people.

Apparently Goodes is playing this weekend. I think it would be great at half time if Roos Tah, Pete Cash and Bunnies Man provide the half time entertainment with a twenty minute rendition of Waltzing Matilda as part of the reconciliation process.

Mate, you are coming across bitter and crazy. Obviously down where you live there isn't a lot of genetic differences from person to person with the extensive inbreeding so I'd have thought you would have understood the concept.

Should be interesting viewing as it should be the highest rating game of AFL this year.

Those ratings will drop like a lead balloon if Goodes is not booed the first time he handles the ball. And lets be honest, that is the only reason why any NRL fans would tune in to this long drawn out saga.
