Worked well for Smith this year and in 2006 for us.

You mean Brian Smith? Plenty of players have no respect for him.

Acting like a hard arse isn't enough - a leader has to earn that respect. Which is why some coaches can get away with it and some can't.

If true I want to know why Souths let him play. Any player in any team would have been dropped no questions asked, you don't just miss training.

I dare say that the fact he wasn't dropped is exactly why he did it. If he might get punished for being absent he would have behaved himself better.

Most young blokes are like this - until they learn self discipline they need to have discipline imposed on them from outside. Sandow obviously knew he wouldn't get dropped for missing training so he didn't really care if he did.

BUT plenty of players do. More respect him than disrespect him I would imagine. You don't coach in the top grade for as long as he has if you don't have respect. Those who don't respect him, I would suspect, are those who can't hack the pace...

BUT plenty of players do.

Indeed they do, but those aren't the players that cause problems in a club. They're also the players most likely to have a healthy respect for authority just because.

For those players I doubt they have any particular respect for Smith, but rather, they respect his job as coach of the club.

More respect him than disrespect him I would imagine.

Yeah maybe. But it only takes a few bad apples, and especially, a few very influential bad apples, to ruin all that hard work and club unity.

You don't coach in the top grade for as long as he has if you don't have respect.

Once again true, but you can't look past the two far-too-big coincidences of:

a. Never won a premiership in all those years of coaching first grade, and

b. The overwhelming anti-Smith sentiment amongst so many players over the years.

I believe these two factors are linked. It seems Brian Smith has never been able to build a team around the kinds of players required to win a premiership - dominant personalities, i.e. leaders.

He has never managed to sign one of these players from another club. He might have arrived at clubs that had them, or even developed them from youngsters, but they have always wanted to get away from him, even if it meant sitting out entire seasons of their first grade careers.

Those who don't respect him, I would suspect, are those who can't hack the pace...

Tallis and Lyon, I'm sure, aren't the only ones who would disagree.

It wouldn't surprise me if he did go walkabout.

I'm sure he did. The fact he wasn't dropped for it shows why he felt he could get away with it in the first place.

I expect Kearney to kick his arse up and down Parra Stadium if he tries that here, and if Sandow knows that in advance (and I'm sure he will) he'll be more likely to keep his shit in one sock.

I never knew Lyon disliked Smith.

Is that the reason he left Parra? I forget.

Nah he left Parra because he was homesick.

That's why he went to England and then came back to live in Sydney.

I figured the reason he left was because he is a stupid merkin?

He's definitely a low-life merkin who let his mates down but the fact is he didn't repeat that behaviour at any of the clubs he's been at since.

I hate the pig-faced traitor til I die, and nothing excuses what he did, but I suspect if we had a different coach at the time he never would have left.

Funny how this story only came out after lol@50uff$ were beaten by Newy, it may be true or it may not but coming from a someone like Weedler only makes me doubt it more. One of the reasons Sandow left the Bunnies was for a change in environment, and who can blame him??? Crowe and that fat Slob Richo are idiots and Lang while a decent bloke and a good coach one upon a time didn't seem to care all that much.

Actually Weidler is spot on most of the time. Simply because he either reports on nothing stories, stuff the general public already know about, or fluff pieces on Mundine, Nasser and the SBW circus.

Sandow was punted from the Gold Coast for displinary reasons and there's been reports of his gambling. I don't think it's a big deal though, our club knew the risks when they signed him and you'd think they wouldn't have wanted a bar of him unless they didn't think they'd be able to keep him in line.

I just hope no quality players leave because of Kearney. Every coach has players that don't like them.

His record speaks for itself. Personally I'm embarassed that I defended him for so long.

I heard in his old steeler days he made his players take a foot ball with them to bed

CHRIS SANDOW going AWOL in the lead-up to South Sydney's last two games did not go down well with his teammates. The players wanted the Parramatta-bound halfback punted from the top grade for the season-defining clash with the Knights in Newcastle. It's little wonder they turned in such an inept performance with that going on in the background. - Danny Weidler Sunday Herald 11/09/11
if this is true im utterly shocked that this has happened with no punishment whatsoever twice i like john lang but if he couldn't do something to reign in a player who goes missing without notice maybe it was time for him to give the game away

i certainly hope sandow will get a very rude shock if he ever does that at the eels

How do you know John Lang and the club didn't punish him? It would have been an internal issue for the club to deal with and internal punishments aren't made public unless the media get hold of it and they're forced to reveal the details.

Sandow has already come out and said that he gave the club a scare by disappearing. So it DID happen.

Anyone who isn't a bit concerned about this is kidding themselves!!! I know I am.
