Keeping Mark In League

Life is about taking opportunities, and I think if you neglect to do that for the sake of satisfying anyone other than your immediate family and friends, you're an absolute idiot.

Despite the fact that I'm a mad maroon and Cowboys supporter, and despite the fact that Mark Gasnier's cocky, arrogant grin (especially when he's wearing sky blue) really get under my skin, I love watching the bloke play - he's outrageously talented. And because of all those things I would hate to see him leave rugby league.

But at the end of the day, if you as a fan feel he should stay for you, or that certain bodies should make an extra effort to keep him there just for you, then I think you're being selfish. If Mark Gasnier was single-handedly responsible for a decent percentage of the money coming into the game today, it would make business sense to keep him in it - but he doesn't. He's not like Michael Jordan was to basketball, and there are dozens of outrageously talented players who are staying right where they are.

So let Mark Gasnier do what's best for Mark Gasnier and if you miss him, watch some old tapes.

I think Gasnier needs to stay because, it appears the dragons are losing a lot of there players, I know there will be new blood coming up but next season the dragons are going to look awfully bare unless some decent players from other clubs are brought for eg: Riddell is now an Eel Gasnier is off to discover the world of rugby whos next??

That's the salary cap for you. Losing Gasnier and Barrett though will free up lots of money to replace them. They will do it a bit tough fighting against the Titans who are trying to build a team but my question to you is - what makes the Dragons so special? Why is it so important that they don't have an "awfully bare" looking side?

The Dragons are on of my favourite teams, So there losing barrett as well next season. I guess theres nothing wrong with having a awfully bare looking team, just a shock to the system not knowing who the players are and there abilities, I guess the NRL are taking us out of our comfort zones. You get use to a side and then it changes.

From what I can make out, besides Dragons supporters, you're the only one suggesting the above, and naturally their supporters don't want them to be "awfully bare".:)

he too inconsistent to be worth all this hype

maybe if he put in a few consistent seasons, I could see what all the fuss was about
WHAT ???
Surely you jest ?? Maybe watching with your eyes OPEN you'd realise what an outstanding talent Gasnier is. Don't watch the games like Ray Charles.

That's a pretty lame argument based on the avg NRL salary, let alone what he's probably on. He should be well set up already, even at his age.

not at all.

look at average salaries for other professional leagues around the world. the nrl's is pretty pissweak in comparison. your average bench player in the premier league in england for soccer is earning what a star player in the nrl is on.

if your playing career is only for about 10 good years, and someone is offering double what you are on now (which is what gas would get if he moved), any sane person would take it.

sacrificing a million bucks or so would seem like cutting off your nose to spite your face.

gaz is just one player, the laegue can replace him. every season a new star player emerges. only problem is that clubs are hamstrung by the cap if they want to keep them.

The arguments for increased pay rolls for rep stars is a sham because it benefits certain glamour clubs who always seem to get more reps. The Cap exemption for one player is fairer but this should automatically apply for long term loyalty anyway and still heads for dangerous ground if you have no stars. We have to make sure the product is protected to an extent from becoming a rah rah development ground. I cant bear to hear any more sh*t from some tosser claiming Union put the finishing touches on "x" as a player. But not at the cost of going broke.

On a personal level, I think Gasnier has to do right by Gasnier and no doubt he will. The comparison about a different firm for better money is fair enough if you see it that way. I dont. I would rather play league. If they offered me 6 times the money, world travel blah blah blah, I would play league.

I know some people will scoff but that is the reality as I see it. I love my code and have only contempt for the boring chardonnay code with its arrogance and pretentiousness.

Matt Rogers used to be my favourite player. As far as I am concerned he doesnt exist anymore. He stepped outside the code of football I am interested in so I really dont care what he is doing be it yawnion or professional darts. I wished him the best and life has moved on. I cant wait to see the next excitement machine come off the assembly line.

*Uncomfortable cough* Based on this year's progress, it may be a while...

I really think it should not be about the money but about where the heart is
I would rather be happy than unhappy

Whats to say Mark will be happy playing union??

I would prefer him to stay in rugby but he is currently doing such a great marketing job for union that he really should just sign for them now. He has already been worth far more to union in media coverage value than they can ever pay him.

If he leaves rugby now and makes the spet down to union perhaps it will put an end to the daily gasnier articles from union hacks bigging up union and rugby hacks bedwetting and handwringing in the media. So, mark, for the good of rugby go to union.

Paley, do you think the words RUGBY LEAGUE or NRL could be used in your post somewhere. I'm stuffed if I know what he's playing or where he's going after reading your post. :-k

As far as I am concerned he plays rugby in a comp called the National Rugby League - now you might think he plays a game called National or League but you would be wrong.

My post is quite clear.

Where Paley comes from, rugby means rugby league and union means rugby union.

Yes, I know.....its a little strange, but everyone needs a hobby, and acting like a fool is Paley's.

;)

So which sport do you believe he plays in the National Rugby League?

You do know that a league is just a competition? Did you think the sport played in the Winfield Cup was called "Cup"?

He plays RUGBY LEAGUE you CRETINOUS MORON, and the sport played in the Winfield Cup was RUGBY LEAGUE.
When the competition started in Sydney, it was administered by the New South Wales Rugby League, it is now administered by the National Rugby League.
You my pale friend, are a DILL. Look at the title of the thread you're posting on, Keeping Mark in League. I rest my case.

Which league do you wish to keep him in? There are many leagues.

I want to keep him playing RUGBY LEAGUE in the NRL,and also one other, and that's the "league of his own" which he's in as far as centers goes.
No further correspondence will be entered into before evidence is received showing success with the frontal labotomy you so desperately need.:D
