Merrin the weak link
Extensive video analysis by Queensland has identified Blues interchange forward Trent Merrin as NSW's potential weak link in Wednesday night's State of Origin opener. Mal Meninga's staff have compiled video dossiers on all 17 Blues players and hours of painstaking research have come up with Merrin as the player the Maroons will target. The stats show Merrin has missed 20 tackles this season - well ahead of the NRL average of 11.7. And Merrin has made around seven errors per match, again much more than the average across the board in the NRL of 4.5. There is no doubt that Merrin is a talented footballer and with seven Origins to his name, is an experienced player at this level. But he plays a game that is risky at times, pushing passes, and can be forced into error. In his defence, the fact he is playing in a Dragons side that has lost six of their last seven games has not helped his stats - but the fact remains, he will be in Queensland's sights once he comes off the bench on Wednesday night.

Race for Proctor down to two
The battle for in-demand Storm forward Kevin Proctor continues to twist and turn. Earlier this week, the Raiders' bid for Proctor was more than $100,000 a season ahead of the next bidder and the lanky back-rower looked Canberra bound. But the desperate Dragons have upped their offer and are now right back in the hunt. It appears to be a two-horse race at this stage, with the Storm unable to come up with the money under the salary cap to retain the Kiwi Test forward. The Roosters were also in the race but have dropped out - although they may come back with a late bid.

Very accurate analysis of Merrin ... Another player going backwards under current coaching staff.. Also needs to be moved back to prop to send him a clear message he needs to start doing the tough stuff first before all the fancy high risk rubbish creeping into his game...

With two up and coming forwards (Stockwell and De Belin) and a few ordinary back row forwards, the Dragons need to revamp their forward squad under a new coach who understands the importance of discipline and go forward.

In my opinion the Dragons should do the following:
Get rid of the coaching staff and recruit a new coaching staff.
Recruit Sims, Proctor, a good hooker and a good prop.
Move Creagh and Merrin to prop.
Let go Thompson, Hunt, Harrison, Ah Mau, Groat, Green, Stanley and Mathews at the end of this season.
Promote O'Brien, Ailaomai and Garvey to the NRL 17 for the rest of this season to see if they are worth keeping.
Promote Bird, Fonua-Blacke, Lo Lo, and Huchison to the Cutters to give them experience against open age players.

So my preferred Dragons NRL 17 for the remainder of the season is:
1. Dugan
2. Morris
3. Mata'Utia
4. Beale/ Runciman
5. Nightingale
6. Widdop
7. Marshall
8. Cooper
9. Rein/Garvey
10. Frizell
11. Creagh (c)
12. Thompson
13. Merrin

14. Stockwell
15. Ailaomai/O'Brien
16. De Belin
17. Garvey

And my ideal team with co-captains for 2015 is:
1. Dugan
2. Morris
3. Farrell/Mata'Utia
4. Beale/Runciman
5. Nightingale
6. Widdop (c)
7. Marshall
8. Merrin
9. Rein/Garvey/New Hooker (80min please)
10. New Prop
11. Sims
12. Proctor
13. Frizell

14. Stockwell/Ailaomai
15. Creagh (c)
16. Cooper
17. De Belin/O'Brien

Hey possm,

Your spot on with that essay you wrote but I would keep Leeson Ah Mau and Kyle Stanley, trust they will go good with Benji there these days, But please don't put That O'Brien dude anywhere near the firs grade team, he is a big softy and we are already well stocked in that department..

Never mind chasing Procter, Put the money in Front of Kasiano or Matulino and they will take it, $700 will get you Matulino or Kas and keep Fonua-Blake here, a great combo I think would put the Dragons Pack at the Front.

Dragons have pulled out of the race for Proctor they will concentrate on Tariq and also get Ashton in a package deal.

Might even see Korbin if the Knights have to shed players to.

Tariq has said he wants out Ashton is off contract and the rumour I heard the Knights may release Korbin if he wants to follow his brothers home.

Whoever the coach maybe for 2015 has to fix the forward pack off loading Harrison, Groat and a few others will help.

I'd be happy if we gave proctor a miss. Asking price of 700 grand- if that's the magic number- is a flaming rip off. He's good but not that good. Good coaching if home grown talent will pay off. In saying that would rather the sims boys; 1,2 or all 3 would be great.

I like Proctor but if that 700k figure is correct, the lack of QUALITY off contract talent is severely inflating his value. Save the cash in this case and target uniting the boys. Another option to look at may be teo instead.

The Sims brothers are mediocre at best...lets start from scratch and get some quality forwards and not fill ins...our recruitment department should have a strategy in place to target quality players over the short and medium term, as well as looking internally to some of the younger forwards coming through. The continuing philosophy of grabbing players at random because they become available is a haphazard way of building up a team and has not worked for us...lets try some forward planning to build up a team.

Surprised if we took Ashton back, he wasn't rated for his ticker when he was playing here previously.

Off topic but Willie Tonga has been left out of the Eels squad this week . Maybe some substance to the rumour of him to Dragons after all . OR he's just injured as reported.
