I hope so. For me, making some sort of headway in boxing is by far the most exciting thing he could do besides winning the RLWC. I don't get all the hype around winning an Olympic Gold medal, at the end of the day the only people who will care about that are the same people who care about rugby union anyway. It's still just a "rugby" achievement, not a "global sporting achievement".

Dude... It's an olympic gold medal.... It's recognised across the world as the pinnacle of human achievement in sports competition.

If a bloke goes to a pub in the middle of nowhere in the USA or Spain or China or whatever country in the world and says he's a rugby league World Cup winner... They would deadset think he's geniused...

If he says he's an olympic gold medalist... That's instant respect... It may well be for BMX or whatever... But it's a special achievement on a global scale.

Not to mention the whole experience of competing in a Olympic Games... Staying in the village... Cracking on to the Swedish volleyballers...

And we ALL know SBW will be slinging dick like a beast in that village.

That's priceless...

Nah. You think soccer players reckon winning Olympic gold is the pinnacle of anything? Tennis players?

You're obviously right that the gold medal itself is universally acknowledged, but I hardly think SBW's (or any elite athlete's) concern is walking up to random people who have never heard of them and trying to convince them that they've achieved something.

If he wants maximum recognition and prestige, that comes from achievements which are recognised in the sporting sphere as being meaningful. No-one thinks winning the soccer Olympic gold means that much really. No-one with a clue is going to think that winning an Olympic gold (in 7s FFS!) in Union makes you some sort of global sporting star. It's a far, far less significant achievement than winning a RWC, for example.

It's like saying Lisa Carrington is a sporting superstar cos she won an Olympic gold. No-one knows who she is. It boosts her profile locally and within her sport but it doesn't mean "the sporting world" gives a shit about kayaking.

I have no doubt though that SBW probably believe that winning an Olympic Gold for a couple days of exhibition 7s while getting to Instagram photos of himself with beach volleyballers is probably a noble pursuit and Allah's will.

No Rapira, feel gutted for the man, he's a very good player and I thought, had a reasonable year to. In this environment, I think he offers more than Bromwich to be honest.

No Blair as well - interesting. Did I miss something or is Sika Manu not there? Can someone compile a list of those who actually missed out? Its hard to think of them

SBW tweeted his support for the Kiwis and said he is going to be doing......nothing.

He's not playing because he's "taking a break".

Gotta say that made my blood boil just a little.

I'm pretty sure playing centre in French Rugby and Japanese Rugby should constitute a break.

I don't think Taylor should have made the tour. He's obviously a Kearney fav though.

He's always a coaches favourite.

Works hard but is average IMO. If he makes the final 17 for any big games I will be shaking my head.

As for people questioning Locke's place, I have a feeling RTS is seen as a winger first and If Hoffman was injured RTS would be the only real option. Locke provides extra security in that position.

Hoffman also made a great fist of the wing whenever he played there for the Broncs. It also wouldn't stun me if Hoffman found himself in the centres if Kearney doesn't opt for a back rower there ( a good excuse to squeeze Taylor into the team, by moving a back rower to centre )

Was typing my last post, didn't see the SBW stuff.

How does he change his mind this quick? It's almost as if they said no just so he could wait for the squad to be announced to show how much pull he has.

Treating everyone like a joke.

NZ have proved they can win big tournaments without him.

Might be good for some hype, but why should the whole game bend over for 1 individual, that's far from good.

He's acting like a spoiled kid. Doesn't want it until someone else has it, now he wants it.
