Sarg was coming back from double pneumonia in PL.
He was off the pace through the year, but in the last few rounds before he left he was close to an NRL start and probably deserved one. Everyone was aware of his frustration at not getting that start.
Sarg would have accepted being held back by quality performers in top grade, but his feelings were made clear frequently that he was not happy not getting a start behind an overweight under performing Wicks.
A lot of people were picking him well before he was ready, and thats when I said he is not yet performing at PL level yet.
I would have Sarg in my squad before Wicks any day of the week.
All the potential in the world means nothing if its not realised.
There are a hundred kids running around out there with potential to be stars. At the end of the day only a special few make it to the top through hard work and dedication.
Wicks is yet to show me anything that would suggest he will reach his potential.
If you recall though, the discussion about Sarg on this forum was based around people suggesting he should replace Royal or Tolar. Was Wicks the only guy keeping Sarg out of NRL? If we had our full contingent on board, and Wicks was to get droppped, the first person he would make room for would surely be Cross. We had other props out earlier in the season, like Faaso, and Sarg was not the next cab off the rank. Maybe he wasn't back to his best at that stage. But even in top fettle is he so much better than other options like Taufua, White, Simmo at prop?
Wicks has obviously been picked on sufferance this year. He is overpaid and has underperformed and there's enough evidence coming from you guys in the camp to convince that he is lazy. So he's a project player and only time will tell if whatever Smith sees in him bears any results.
The fact remains that Sarg is blurring the issue. He is a good player. But we have had a surfeit of props on our books who are good but not superstars. Sarg was one of them. Laying it all on Wicks through the public media is pretty undignified of him. However true his remarks may be.
