Grima:

Looks still involved…

“Mentor 86 rugby league staff, write coaching programs for The Eels’ 9 elite programs to help more than 230 players within these program to transition into full-time players.”

is this his work:

Also thought I saw him with the NRL team on Friday

He can only ‘develop’ the players we recruit. If the best ones are chasing the money/perks on offer at other clubs then it’s a matter for our junior recruitment team to solve, and will require the club’s big wigs making more resources available.

Yeah we are very unlucky. Not only unlucky in NRL but also unlucky at Jnr recruitment.
We just need some luck in the junior juniors.

Over a large sample it's not luck, it's resources. Our juniors were very good between 2014 and 2017. I'd say we've spent considerably less since then. Luck has nothing to do with it.

Someone who is more closely aligned to juniors and pathways can answer here. Aren't the junior squads salary cap exempt? Or what are the parameters for remuneration etc from 16s and up?
Of relevance for junior players is this:

Tertiary education fees, approved traineeships, medical insurance costs, relocation/temporary accommodation costs are not included in the cap but must be approved

But then these points justifying why some clubs are so much stronger are also relevant:

Some of the reasons why a player may sign with a club include:
  • The number of support staff, their expertise and the support facilities.
  • Education and welfare support structures.

Hopefully "someone who is more closely aligned to juniors and pathways" can give you a more official source than NRL.com

I don't believe so.
I think it depends on who is recruiting. Many clubs will get a lot ofmplayers wrong just as fans will. They are trying to pick kids at age 15-17 who will make it. And reality is if you have 2 very talented kids in the same position thenone who misses out will try and seek an opportunity at another club. I have friends who's kids play SG ball. And out will say favouritism also plays a huge role.

JA is actually a great example. Many on here think he has a future and just needs to develop while others would cut him end of season and look elsewhere.

I know people in our club who rated Schneider as the one to keep over Mahoney. Even Fitler had him in the emerging blues squad.
Your special talents like Hayne and Turbo would stand out like dogs balls. But so many forwards would be tricky to know. Look at Pauli Pauli and Tepai. Those two killed under 20s. Looked like special talents and I was excited watching them coming through. My guess is plenty of clubs would of picked both as future NRL PLAYERS and maybe even stars.

So yes resources help of course. The more juniors to chose from also increases chances but it also give you a higher chance of picking the wrong kids and letting the better ones go.

These merkins work for free do they? Just like the tuck shop lady? Mate you are talking about club employees. The best ones are in very high demand. What do you think it takes to bring them from one club to another?

Interestingly I know of one club that did expect it’s Matt coach to do the role for free….not sure if that is common across all the NRL clubs
Not too dissimilar to SAP and youth League soccer where the coaches, assistant coaches and managers for some clubs allows them to have their kids play for free...no pay but a saving of upwards of $2-3k depending on club and age group.

I reckon there’s a few clubs that don’t give a shit about that age group. SG Ball is where the resources start getting spent. They poach players from other clubs’ Harold Matts teams.

We are just a very very small club in an isolated little town in an area where nobody plays rugby league. With hardly any money. We will meed luck to develop juniors. Lots of it.

Dylan Brown played in our Harold Matts team, recruited from NZ. How many of our current pathways players are recruited from overseas? Maybe Joey Grima’s passport expired?

I have never seen a coach be involved who has a child in the age group….and NRL club pathways selection is no cost to the player….

That’s not correct, I have had my son and grandsons play junior league reps, everything is provided free inc Training gear, tracksuits, shorts, socks, refreshments at training and game day. So different from soccer when you pay thousands and your kids have to hand their playing shirts back, it’s an upside down triangle where the kids fund the elites.
