It appears that hybrid rugby game between English and Australian teams is still on the table and Challenge Cup winners Leeds are keen
there were reports earlier this year that Great Britain rugby league and Australia rugby union were to clash at Wembley in December. Now it's more likely to be a Super League team against a Super Rugby franchise.
"I've heard about that; it would be worth looking at," Rhinos coach Brian McDermott said, adding he had not been told of an opponent or venue.
"The rugby union game is in great shape at the moment, they've got some fantastic athletes and it would be interesting if each game pits its best against the other."
Who is this designed to benefit exactly? I really love both sports, but I just don't get how you can reconcile the fundamentally different philosophies that underpin the games (Union at its core is almost entirely about the contest for possession, whilst League is about ball-in-hand hard running footy in which the contest for the ball has been almost entirely removed).
Maybe there is a promoter somewhere who thinks some quick bucks can be made from an exhibition match.
There will never, ever be a serious game played along these lines, for the reasons you outline. They are two quite different games, with a fair bit of overlap, but huge differences as well.
If I were trying to promote something, it would be 13 players a side under modified rugby union rules (because that is the only way that any serious rugby union players would be willing to play).
No line-outs, quick throw ins only. No mauls, and especially no rolling mauls. No specialist props in the rugby union team (there wouldn't be any, anyway, if there are 13 a side).
Tackled player releases the ball, then it is open slather, but the ball must be picked up, not played with the foot.
I'd like to see that, and I reckon it would sell out Twickers for sure.
