League v Union

Honestly, why would either side agree to this if it was real. Injury risk, giving the other code more ammo if you lose.

There is absolutely no up side in playing a "hybrid game"

its not a hybrid game though is it....

a hybrid game would be 14v14,6 tackles,lines outs,5m defences,5pt try,2pt kicks,2pt drop goals etc...

not 40mins league then 40mins union

Any hybrid rules created will be a regression of Rugby League rules, but it will also make the game faster for Rugby Union which would play into the hands of the League players.

It appears to be a promo thing to try and get RL some exposure in London, which is utterly pointless, as no one bothered to support a London based RL team recently anyway.

So Union is the only code getting any mileage out of this.

I don't see why there should even be "hybrid rules", league isn't complicated and a game of 9s with league rules would still show who was better at basic rugby.

That ignores the fact that the contest for possession is at the heart of rugby union. It used to be at the heart of rugby league, not all that long ago. Real scrums, and genuine contests at the play-the-ball, unlimited tackles.

That is the biggest single difference between the two codes, and that is why hybrid rules would have to be used, if there is ever to be a cross-code contest.

You might not like the contest for possession, but lots of rugby union followers do, and a game like the one proposed needs to appeal to the widest possible audience.

A top rugby union team would not want to play under rugby league rules for a whole game. Why would they?

I don't agree. You will have a lot of interested Rugby fans and if they see a half of free-flowing Rugby compared to a half of scrums, mauls and constant kicking they may see RL as the sport they may prefer to watch. Don't forget that London and South England are a RU dominated area so any publicity RL can get in the South the better. Not to mention there may be quite a few who can't differentiate between the 2 codes.

London's ESL side was an absolute basket case and it was little wonder they didn't attract a better following, it doesn't mean there is no interest in RL. The growth in RL at junior level shows that there is an interest, London just needs a team that is not living from season to season and I think London Scholars can evolve into this fit.

You make it out as though Rugby Union fans have never seen Rugby League before.

They watch it as much as anybody else does, just so they can try and bitch about it and talk about how Union is so much better.

Union fans love Union not because of the on-field stuff, but because of the status. They know the on-field stuff is shit compared to League, thats why the watch League.
