Let's get it together: Smith urges Knights to generate winning run

25/05/2008 10:22:00 PM
NEWCASTLE Knights coach Brian Smith believes it would be premature to label Saturday's home clash with the Warriors as "must-win" but admits his team need to start stringing victories together if they hope to feature in the play-offs.

The Knights were ninth on the competition ladder after yesterday's results, two points adrift of five teams: Manly, Brisbane, Penrith, Wests Tigers and eighth-placed Cronulla, who play the Bulldogs (14th) at ANZ Stadium tonight.

But the points table is deceptive, because Newcastle have already received their two byes for the season and, of the teams above them, only the Panthers have also received their four complimentary points.

The rest of the top eight have received only one bye thus far and have racked up at least six wins apiece two more than Newcastle, who have four wins and five losses from their first nine games.

As a comparison, the Knights were better placed at the corresponding stage of last season, having won five of their first nine fixtures.

With 15 games remaining in their regular season, there is no cause for the Knights to panic yet.

But a loss to the Warriors, who were lapped 38-12 by the Roosters in Auckland yesterday, are 13th on the table and have not won away from home this season, would be a setback Newcastle can scarcely afford.

"It's obvious what we've got to do as far as the competition ladder is concerned," Smith said yesterday.

"And not just this game we need to get a number of wins together, and at some stage during the rest of the season we have to win some consecutives.

"I think everybody knows that in our last game [a 38-26 loss to the Tigers] we lost that defensive rhythm and hardness that we developed, and we're all keen to get it back as quickly as we can."

Nonetheless, Smith said it was too early to pinpoint the Warriors clash as a crucial juncture in Newcastle's season.

"I don't see it as crossroads, but it would be very good if we could win it," Smith said. "There's a lot of games left in the season, but at some stage we need get a run of games together when we play well and hopefully rack up some wins."

Smith is expected to show faith in his troops after successive losses to Melbourne and the Tigers, although the likes of Mitchell Sargent, Junior Sau, Michael Young, Mark Taufua, Aku Uate and Luke MacDougall have been pushing their selection claims in the NSW Cup.

"I can't see us making too many extensive changes to our team," Smith said. "We've done pretty well so far . . . at the same time it's good to know that we've got some depth and guys putting up their hand, because we'll need them at some point."

One change that will be forced on the coach is finding a replacement for enforcer Ben Cross, who broke his thumb on his Origin debut last week and will be sidelined for four weeks.

Smith was undecided whether Sargent, Newcastle's most experienced prop, would be included in the front-row rotation for the first time all season.

"Mitch has been knocking on the door a bit to be included in the squad, but we did some talking about it last week and went through what our strengths and weakness were in that area," he said.

"We haven't really arrived at anything yet. We'll sit down and work it out on Monday and name the team on Tuesday."

Another dilemma Smith faces is whether to retain Danny Wicks as starting prop after his disappointing game against the Tigers or restore him as an impact player on the bench.

"It's a bit ironic, because the first two games he [Wicks] started against Gold Coast and Melbourne were the best we've started all year," Smith said.

"I wouldn't say that individually he dominated, but certainly as a team they've been our best two starts. But he wasn't so good in our last game, either at the start or generally, so he's back in the mix with the rest of them."

The Knights had the bye over the weekend and were given a three-day break from training.

"They've had Friday, Saturday, Sunday off and back to work on Monday," Smith said.

"It's a long, hard road from here on in. We've got plans for later in the season when we can give them little breaks to keep them as fresh as possible."

I think its more of a must-win game in the context of the season more so than Brian's giving it credit for - if we want to make the semis that is. Such a promising start could all be for nothing over the next couple of weeks. We've got the Warriors this week, then the Dogs (minus Bedsy and Kidley), then the Cowboys in Townsville (with Bedsy not much chance of backing up) followed by the Roosters at home. Its a pretty tough month coming up all things considered ...

If we are contenders it's time to step it up a gear.
We have had time to get the team playing well together. We seem to have the cattle as Jack Gibson would say.
From now on we need to get bloody serious.
I don't think the first step is beating the floundering Warriors on our home turf. I think the first step is annihilating them.

Hopefully Thurston gets an injury in SOO and can't play for the Boys. I'm finding it disturbing that Smith just won't pick form players in NSW but has no problem with picking Ciraldo, Doogs (though he had a good game against the tigers) and Wicks all year long.

If wicks is in the run on I'll be shattered, if he is on the bench I'll be disapointed. The bloke needs to be thrown into reserve grade for a week and be forced to go on the atkins diet!

I went through our remaining games and realistically can only find 12 comp points, maybe 14, that puts us on 26 points at best. I don't think that'll be enough to get into the 8

we can beat any team on the day. we need to stop looking at who we're playing against and start looking at what we're not doing to gain some consistency in our results.

we need to win a match or 2 during the origin period. if we can't then we have big problems. warriors match is vital.

If Smith comes up with a decent gameplan we can beat any side - we can go the rest of the season unbeaten potentially - but i'll be happy with about 60% wins from now on.

Which form players?

Looking at the crystal ball and banking on points is ridiculous.

We have beaten the Roosters, Titans and Manly this year, we may or may not do it again.

We have been beaten by the Warriors and the Tigers, both teams we can beat, but it depends on the game.

Its a week by week proposition.

I have never seen such roller coaster supporters.

Leading into the Roosters game round 6, after three losses, it was all doom and gloom. We win, and everyone is all happy about the seasons prospects.

A couple of losses in a row and we are looking at the draw and struggling to see where we will win points?

We have beaten three of the current top four sides.

This comp is very tight.

Well said mate.

We have been playing good footy for most of the year and have displayed none of the roll over and die attitude of '07. The attitude is there and when the execution follows we are more than capable of knocking off anyone in the comp. Injuries to key players are the only concern IMO

Which form players?

As the article says, players in NSW Cup that are performing well and putting their hands up for selection. I'm not getting all gloomy about a couple of losses. I'm just saying that if a player consistently doesn't bring much to a game then we should pick a different player.

I know where you are coming from mate.

I just dont think there are players in PL that are really putting thier hand up for a start.

I wasnt singling you out in the doom and gloom department, sorry if I came across that way.

Yeah I agree with you that some of the players mentioned aren't exactly lighting the world on fire. I'd really like to see Taufua get a shot though because he's trying really hard and seems keen.

The system we are running for PL is a complete joke.
We started the season great, but having only half a coach and getting players from NYC and firstgrade at short notice etc means the team is in chaos most games.

Without Walsh running the show we would have no form at all.

We need to consistently beat lesser sides at home, i think we all know that. Last weeks effort against the tigers was like going back in time for me. The boys need to find a way to get up for those games because you can bet the warriors have set themselves to win their first away game this weekend.

In all fairness, its something we've always had a problem with - beating sides below us on the table and giving teams above us on the table a hell of a game
