No

Definitely No.

Manly led the comp in tries from kicks in 07-08 didnt they?
If not #1 they were right up there, which i think says abit about Orfords kicking game.

BTW, honourable mention to Brett Kimmorley for long kicking game

I don't think that there are many great long passers in the game at the moment.. The game has changed unfortunately and great left and right spirals are not really exhibited on a consistent basis like in the 90s. Just look at Hornby..

Of the modern day players, I think Todd Carney hits them long and well from both sides as does Mitch Pearce. Doing it on the run is the hard part and it's a great sight to see. I hate the prick but Anasta has a pretty good long spiral off his right only, he floats off his left.

Mullen and Dureau also have good passes on them which obviously stem from Johns who was the best in the business.

And of course Barrett.

Orford has a great short kicking game when he's right, let's just not talk about his long kicking game:sarcasm:.

Scott Dureau :sarcasm:

I think Pearce would hit a 30m target easy. Very good long passing game.

Done a good long pass on Monday night. Problem is it cost the Knights a certain try.

Sherwin threw the best long ball I've seen in years the other day in the UK League. He looks to be going OK over there.

The ability to throw the flat long ball to create space laterally against a fast defence is still the most valuable attribute at Origin level.

Now these blokes are not the longest passers of the ball, but IMO, in this order, the best passers of long balls are:

1. Lockyer
2. Thurston
3. Prince

Until NSW can find at least one half to match them in this area they will still struggle at Origin level.

Trent Barrett would probably be next; no surprise he was probaly the last NSW half since the Johns / Fittle era to be part of regularly successful Origin sides.

This actually ties in for me with my "criticism" of Stacey Jones in the Stacey Jones thread.

Always wished the Warriors had a half who could throw those long, flat passes. We never have.

Kiddley used to throw awesome long balls....

Who cares if they were 10-15m forward and hit Carney on the chest to beat canberra?

Campese's long passing game is developing nicely I think.. he'll never be the best in the league at it, but he can certainly hit his mark. Shame Purtell's taken on a Marshall Chalk-like tendency to drop the ball with the line open.

All time Ricky Stuart was a gun with his long passing.
Agreed .. combine that with his supreme use of decoy runners and he was a bit of a headache close to the line for the Maroons. Wally Lewis had an amazing long pass for his day (particularly early to mid-80's) but these days it is a lot more common and many guys are better.

Ricky Stuart used to not only be able to shoot a long ball out but he would often suck in the defenders with it creating the overlap.

Guys like Pearce can pass one but he telegraphs it or does it when its better to put it through the hands.

Ricky Stuart used to also have the best long kicking game, i remember the kicking duel he had with Rowdy in Origin, pegged him right back into his own half. Campese has an enormous boot.

Best long passer I have seen - left and right: Johns. Currently - can't make that call.

Best medium passer I have seen: Mortimer. Currently Heather.

Best short passer I have seen - Beetson. Currently Heather.

Best long kicker I have seen - general play: Brentnall. Currently - dunno.

Best medium range kicker I have seen - general play - dead heat between Sterling and Joey. Currently - Prince.

Best short kicker I have seen - general play: Langer. Currently Mateo.

Best long range goal kicker I have seen - Cronin. This art, sadly, is dead.
