LU - Greatest Drummer Of All Time

Will be interesting to hear Dream Theater without him, but for me they can't possibly be the same band.

One of the absolute elite.
hard to tell how it's going to sound, really. needless to say Petrucci and Portnoy were the major creative influences in the band. it will be interesting to see what their new drummer brings to the table, i can't imagine they will bring someone on to just get given a sheet and play. that's what LaBrie is for.

i'll nominate Portnoy, too. he's the best i've heard and seen perform in person. his full Dream Theater kit commands the utmost respect just by itself. most of his kits are less drumkits, and more percussion command centres.

his Mirage Monster setup:

... and it's still not the biggest kit i've seen him play. i think it was the dvd "Liquid Drum Theater" in which i saw his biggest kit - pretty sure it would be his full recording kit, with full gong and everything included. it was about 270+ degrees around him. absurd... and the real absurd things is he has a f**king purpose for every single piece, and knows how and when to use them.

Portnoy is a tough act to beat, in both his ability to compose and ability to play. he is certainly amongst the very elite.

Gene Hoglan and Dave Lombardo are the two best I haven't seen mentioned in this thread so far.

A drummer, forever the butt of jokes from his bandmates about not being a real musician etc, quits and vows to break drummer stereotypes and learn another instrument and start his new band.

The drummer walks in to his local music shop and after looking around he says to the clerk "Give me that red saxaphone and the button accordian."

The clerk looks at him briefly and then asks, "You're a drummer aren't you?" to which the drummer replies in the affirmative.

"Well", says the clerk "I'm quite happy to sell you the fire extinguisher but the radiator is not for sale!"

Really? I'm the only one to mention Vinnie Coaluita?

Anyway, yeah forgot about Lombardo and Hoglan. Both great.

But my personal favourite is Carter Beauford. Freak.

charlie watts....apparently he is a gun.

I don't really care how good they are just as long as they keep time , don't fug up and know their place.

on par with Ringo,

I've seen 5 year olds who can play better than both of them

a true musician

writes most of their songs and can play all instruments but chooses to play drums

Has to be Joey jordison for me. The guy is a freak. Also very versatile as he has filled in for metallica, korn and rob zombie. He is also not too shabby with a guitar as he plays for murderdolls. Joey would have to be the best modern day drummer. Can't really comment on the olden days as I'm not familiar with them.

As has been mentioned. Forget blink182 but Travis barker is pretty awesome

saw a girl at Soundwave wearing a tee shirt that simply said "Mrs Joey Jordinson"

made me lol

I think Ringo was a better drummer than he was allowed to be by John and Paul. He occasionally shows flashes of what he can do. John just wanted a time keeper and Ringo was a machine at that. He's a product of his time.
