How was that season lucky?

That side had about 6 or 7 rep or future rep players.
Minor Premiers that went on to win the Premiership... it was all luck that they were consistent the entire season and didn't choke.

Plus the team was pretty handy, especially in the form they had in 2003 and 2004.

Origin/International reps:
Rhys Wesser - QLD
Luke Rooney - NSW, AUS
Ryan Girdler - NSW, AUS (with records for both)
Paul Whatuira - NZ
Luke Lewis - NSW, AUS
Craig Gower - NSW, AUS
Joel Clinton - AUS
Luke Priddis - NSW, AUS
Martin Lang - QLD
Joe Galuvao - NZ
Tony Puletua - NZ
Scott Sattler - QLD
Ben Ross - QLD
Trent Waterhouse - NSW, AUS

Non Origin/International reps:
Preston Campbell (a joke that he never made the NSW side IMO)
Shane Rodney
Luke Swain

10. Peter Lewis

12. Danny Galea
13. David McLean

Subs:

Pfft apart from girds, no superstars in that team. Solid players but no one I'd jump through hoops to buy though

I'd say its a pretty handy lineup, which would beat any side in the comp this year on 2003 form.
Regardless if you don't rate the side ending the season with 21 wins and 6 losses, a minor premiership and premiership is not never luck.
The tigers flogged team 5, 3, beat 2 and then beat 5 again who weren't in bad touch by that stage having flogged the minor premiers.

No side has won from outside the top 4 in the last decade and to make the top 4 you can't rely on luck, therefore they all deserve their premierships. This year I'd say we have the most open race and the most likely to yield a dark horse premiership from Canberra or NZ perhaps, which I guess could be considered lucky, stumbling on form at exactly the right time.

Melbourne were extremely lucky to even reach the Grand Final, let alone win it. We comprehensively flogged them in Melbourne first week, then they got past Canterbury courtesy of a (very) lucky bounce off a Ricky Stuart grubber, then they were the beneficiaries of Parramatta's 2nd consecutive Preliminary Final choke, then Hollywood Bill held their hand to get them home in the second half of the GF. Can you name another team ever that has got out of jail 3 times in a row in the last 5 minutes, let alone to win a premiership?

Dragons had tons of chances to win that Grand Final, but chocked.

Bulldogs for being allowed to keep their acquired stars on reduced salaries then sign a representative footballer in Andrew Ryan and steal a premiership. Asterix on 2004.
Winner!!!

No team can win a grand final purely on luck.
Yes they can, by playing Parramatta......

Canberra would have to be the luckiest side in the last decade. All those wins on the back of dodgey referee calls. Just ask Skeepe!

But yes, Brisbane 06 wins the prize. Lucky Ian Schubert could never find the exit gate at Roma St Station!

How can the Tigers of 05 be lucky?

They had the best spine of any team this decade and played footy which relied on skill and anything but luck.

As far as luck is concerned, the Eels of 2009. Between refs calls, arsey offloads and bounces of the ball, they were by far and away the luckiest team.

I hate the Tigers, but they worked for 2005 far more than their successors in 2006.
Tigers went into the finals on fire unlike Brisbane who can really only be described as opportunistic at best.

how about penrith when they won it earlier in the decade?

bunch of nuffies more or less. a few solid first graders and not much else

How about the Dogs of 2004? dead set lucky not to get split up after cheating in 2002 and the Coffs Harbour scandal in 04.
