Should Robert Lui be deregistered by the NRL?

The vast majority of employers I know would not want a convicted woman basher working for them. It's an embarassment, horrible PR and only gets criticism for little gain in return. Same with rapists, murderers, armed robbers etc etc.

Noone has a right to play in the NRL. It's a privilege that can and should be taken when proof comes to light of them not having the necessary moral character to be in the NRL.

And yes, playing a sport and getting rich from playing sport, as well as the fame and popularity that comes with is a privilege. And should be treated like that by the people running the game.

The NRL's response to this has been highly amateurish.

FFS you're an idiot. Getting convicted for a serious crime will get you sacked from most jobs, apparently not from the PRIVILEGE of playing professional sport.

actually it wont. maybe for particular things like the police, but i'm pretty certain unless a conviction came with certain limitations such as sex offenders being unable to go within a certain distance from schools, if you sacked someone cos they were convicted of beating up their wife they'd have a good claim to unfair dismissal. you may not agree with it (i don't) but i'm pretty sure that it would be considered unfair dismissal

look at mathew newton as a great comparison. the merkin has beaten up 2 girlfriends (and a cabbie - so he's ahead of lui) yet he's still out there getting acting roles etc

mark latham broke a cabbie's arm and he almost became our PM

Yeah wrong. The NRL has every right to deregister and could have if they weren't softcocks. If Carney could get deregistered then so can he.

Every employee in the country has a right to sack a worker if they have a violent conviction. We're not talking minor crimes here.

There isn't many non-menial jobs you would keep if you got a serious conviction.

Again, where are they drawing the line of what is "major" and what is "minor"?
Dangerous territory to set a precedent.

Common sense $tinkler. Bashing your pregnant gf - major. Rape - major. Getting in a scuffle with some gibberer in a pub - minor. Speeding fine - minor.

Let's "imagine" that an NRL player, let's call him Jamie, is gay, and bashes his boyfriend one night after a few cocktails at the local nightclub.
That is domestic violence. Is it major, or minor? How long does Mr Soward have to sit out for?

Is Drink Driving major or minor?
What about fraud?
What if you push your girlfriend instead of punching and kicking her?

It's a grey area mate, and something that will cause issues.

What if you are found guilty be a court, sacked and suspended by the NRL, and then found not guilty on appeal in court? Can you sue the NRL and your former club for loss of income?

And in answer to the poll question, I've said no. He shouldnt' be deregistered.
Clubs should be smart enough to not sign him. He's a liability,
But the NRL shouldn't have a say in it.

You are right, clubs should be smart enough to not sign him. But it becomes the NRLs responsibility when a club signing a player makes the entire sport look bad.

I see the deregister option as a Rugby League related thing.
Positive drugs tests, involvement in betting scandals, that kind of stuff.

CLUBS need to grow a set and make a stand.
THEY should dictate what type of person they want at their club.

The NRL should look after running the game, and the on-field stuff.
The courts should look after the off-field behaviour of the players, the same as they do for you and I.

That's my opinion anyway. You obviously don't agree. Whatevs!

Lui asks NRL for reprieve

ANTONY STEWART | July 25th, 2012

COWBOYS co-captain Johnathan Thurston has backed a push by the club to have Robert Lui reinstated into the playing ranks in 2012.
Lui will fly to Sydney tomorrow to launch a high-powered plea to be allowed to play again this season.
Armed with two favourable reports from a psychologist and evidence of his community work in Townsville, Lui will meet with Australian Rugby League Commission interim boss Shane Mattiske to try to overturn his one-year playing ban.
Cowboys chief executive Peter Jourdain and player welfare manager Kevin Marty will accompany Lui for the meeting.
In April, Lui was placed on a two-year good behaviour bond and fined $2000 in a Sydney court after admitting to a domestic violence assault on his girlfriend, Taleah Backo, following Mad Monday while he was at the Wests Tigers.
The 22-year-old playmaker was handed a one-year ban by then NRL boss David Gallop and has since been completing a rehabilitation program which has included regular meetings with Townsville psychologist Jo Lukins.
Thurston said the off-field work Lui had been undertaking had had clear and positive effects.
"He's been training well and he's been doing everything that's been asked of him off the field," he said.
"Hopefully everything goes to plan for Thursday (tomorrow) and he's playing football before the year is out. He's been working hard on the training paddock, he's good to have around the place, he's great company and he gets on really well with all the boys.
"Like I said, he's done everything that has been asked of him ... he's held himself together really well and hopefully this is the last bit for him to get the right to play rugby league again."
If successful, whether Lui would play NRL or Queensland Cup would likely be up to the Cowboys.
But the club is adamant the former Tiger's next stage in his rehabilitation should take place on the field.
"After going to court, I felt really ashamed and I tried to hide away from the world," Lui said.
"But I really want to apologise ... and say sorry to everyone."

f**k no.

He may have been good for 6 months but he was brilliant and involved in counselling for a year after the first alleged assault, he was involved in community work through that time as well.

Mad Monday rolls around, he hits the Cruisers and away it goes again.

He was issued with a one year ban, he serves it.

To violence against women Cowboys say no.....unless we need a him for football?

To be fair to both the Cowboys and Lui - the current indication seems to be that the physcologist has recommended he start playing again...

I couldnt give two shits about what a physcologist thinks, this piece of scum deserves more than what he got. I dont want to see people like this in our game, just gives it a bad name.
