The rumours of Isaac talking with warriors and wanting to go home have been around for years

They weren't rumours, Isaac has always openly stated he wanted to come home at some point. But there were never any rumours of actual contract negotiations that I know of.

Generally when he's been off contract, not when he still has 2.5 years left on a deal. Nobody saw this coming, just like the RTS signing. Either Doyle is a sneaky motherf**ker or the media actually have some level of respect for him so don't drop the story too early (as unlikely as that one may be)

Jim Doyle is starting to make a massive difference there, first RTS and now Luke, both signings pretty much done without any rumour or speculation beforehand. Plus the RTS signing was perfectly spun as a swap for Tomkins which pretty much took any sting out of Tomkins leaving early.

Compare this to the Manly shambles.....worlds apart. DCE parades around in front of the media trying to find a new club where as Luke and RTS do it all behind closed doors. That shows a lot of respect to the club you are leaving.

it is impressive that every target of the warriors has been a key position player. they got hoffman in to address culture in the pack and then all marquee targets have been spine players (RTS/foran/luke) except taumayolo.

1. RTS
6. ? (apparently townsend's going to back to the nulla? - so leuluai/mason lino/ben henry?)
7. johnson
9. luke

haven't seen that overall level of class in the warriors line-up EVER.

Bully has been fantastic for Souths. I'll be gutted if he leaves but he's well and truly earned the right to do whatever he likes.

It'll suck seeing him play for someone else.

as a souths fan myself, that it bullshit IMO.

the club made recruitment and retention decisions based on him inking a new contract and hanging around until the end of 2017. now there's talk of him wanting out?

he's no doubt been a great servant for the club, and souths appear prepared to fulfill his request in an act of goodwill, but it is a bitch of a circumstance considering they didn't retain Korasiau, and Sam left before the end of his contract too.

Did DCE actually do that though?

That's the way it seemed to me. None of the recent players that have left Manly have done it as quietly as Luke and RTS. DCE, Watmough and Stewart were all very public about their departures.

You have to respect how well these warriors signings have been handled. Professionalism of that standard seems rare.

I think this is what it comes down to. Keep Luke and you probably lose two of these guys. Release him and you're a good chance of keeping them. Souths may just decide that the difference between Luke and McInnes is small enough to warrant the release if it means they can keep Johnston, and Grevsmuhl as well.

We'll see. Like Matai, there's been Luke rumours before.

not a bad point. Luke is only 27 though. still in his prime. they'd have to have a lot of confidence in McInnes' potential and coming good on that because Luke (and a f**king quality #9 in general for any team) makes such a difference to Souths' play. The players out wide lose their effectiveness if there is no penetration in the middle and the #9 is crucial to this.

circumstances are different. those Manly players were all told one thing with the old board, and then the new board re-negged on those verbals.

I can understand where this is coming from, but it seems to be an unescapable fact that contracts are only safeguards for players or coaches, not clubs.

Fans can probably only comfort themselves that they might get a few back the other way.
