Apologies for the delay, guys. I'd intended to burn the latest shows to CD and write them up whilst I was visiting my family for Christmas, but I forgot to bring it along. I should be back in Newcastle on the 29th or 30th, and I'll try to get the next episodes of Raw and Smackdown up then.

(Had some computer troubles, meaning I lost a lot of my details for the next two shows)

The last Raw before New Year's Revolution kicks off with the fans booing as Raw General Manager Eric Bischoff struts out to the ring. He runs down the card for New Year's Revolution, saying that due to the contender's clashes being drawn - we'll see a four way elimination match to decide the WWE Championship. He also says that tonight there will be a four way match to decide who will face Shelton Benjamin at New Year's Revolution for the Intercontinental Championship.

MATCH ONE - V2 vs. CM Punk and ??
The team of Val Venis and Viscera is first out, the babyface pairing getting a decent reaction before the arrival of 'Straight Edge' CM Punk. The fans are waiting to see who his mystery partner will be, and they're surprised to see Devon 'Crowbar' Storm make his WWE debut. The match itself is fairly competitive, with Storm showing plenty of promise before Viscera gets in and cleans house. Venis and Punk eventually get to grips with one another, and it's Venis who comes out on top. The match ends prematurely when, after Venis nailed him with a fisherman's suplex and went up top for the Money Shot. Punk rolls away and, in a display of poor sportsmanship, nails Venis with a chair to end the match by DQ.

We return from the break to find Rob Conway out in the ring for his latest edition of the Legends Challenge. He mocks his previous opponents and says there isn't a legend alive who has what it takes to beat him. This brings out Ric Flair, and the fans go absolutely nuts as the Nature Boy struts out to the ring. He calls Conway a coward and a cheat, and while he can respect a man who cheats to win, he can't respect a coward.

MATCH TWO - Ric Flair vs. Rob Conway
This one starts off with Flair in control and Conway on the back foot. Conway gets plenty of heat for rolling to the outside to avoid Flair, who soaks up the crowd's adoration. Conway eventually gets back into it after low-blowing the master of the low blow and even goes so far as to set up the Ego Trip. But he can't out dirty the dirtiest player in the game, and Flair is able to get free and lock on the figure four for the win. The fans are on their feet as Conway drops his first ever Legends Challenge match.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break as the first of four contenders for the Intercontinental Title arrive. Goldust gets a mixed response, and the arrival of Chris Masters draws plenty of heat. Chavo Guerrero is out next (to the usual cacophany of 'Eddie' chants) and finally it's Carlito.

MATCH THREE - Carlito vs. Goldust vs. Chris Masters vs. Chavo Guerrero for #1 IC Contendership
This is an elimination bout and the commentary team hype it up as a 'preview' of how the New Year's Revolution main event will unfold. Things start off in a basic free for all early on, and it's Goldust who is first eliminated after Chris Masters locks him in the Masterlock for a submission elimination. Chavo is in trouble facing the two heels, who agree to team up against the popular babyface. They dominate him for a while before Chavo is able to reverse a whip with a big DDT reversal of an attempted suplex. He then goes up top for the Five Star Frog Splash, but Carlito is able to rack him up and allow Masters to suplex him to the mat. Cover, but Chavo kicks out. Carlito shoves Masters and the two begin to argue, allowing Chavo to quickly roll up the distracted Masters. It's now one on one, and Chavo begins to come into his own. Just as it looked as if he would win, however, Carlito was able to blind him with a faceful of apple - pinning Chavo with a hand on the ropes.

We cut backstage to where Big Show and Kane are preparing for a match against the unlikely teaming of Joey Ryan and the debuting Carlton Kaz.

MATCH FOUR - Kane & Big Show vs. Ryan and Kaz
This is a quick, brutal squash match - with the bigger pairing sending a message to TNT by nailing both Ryan and Carlton Kaz with the double chokeslam.

COMMERCIAL

Returning from the break and it's Trish Stratus out in the ring. The commentary team explain she's been away promoting her film debut in the upcoming American Pie 4. She's got a match against Victoria and her erstwhile ally, Mickie James.

MATCH FIVE - Trish Stratus (c) vs. Mickie James vs. Victoria for the WWE Women's Title
This is a fairly standard women's match, lots of grabbing and screaming, with Stratus pinning Victoria with an assist from Mickie James. Mickie tries to celebrate with Stratus after the match, but Trish seems a little bothered that Mickie 'threw' the match for her.

MATCH SIX - Shelton Benjamin (c) vs. Lance Cade for the IC Title
Trevor Murdoch is ringside for this one, and his presence is certainly felt for the opening stages of this match - his interference preventing Shelton from hitting a high impact move on several occasions. He's eventually stopped, however, with Kane and Big Show hitting the ringside. Whilst Kane chases Murdoch out through the crowd, Show hits the ring and (with the referee down after an earlier bump) drills Cade with a chokeslam. Benjamin covers grudgingly, and the recovered referee gives him a somewhat tainted win.

COMMERCIAL

A video package following the near epic Triple H vs. Ric Flair feud plays before this match, which pits Triple H up against the relative newcomer, Jimmy Jacobs. The master of 'Huss' gets a modest reaction as he struts/dances out to the ring.

MATCH SEVEN - Triple H vs. Jimmy Jacobs
This is not the squash match fans would expect, with the courageous Jacobs displaying typical underdog skills and coming close to upsetting a clearly unfocussed Triple H. He hits the Big Boot at one point and looks like he's going to pick up the upset, but Triple H is able to kick out. Things look worse for The Game when Ric Flair rushes down to the ring and distracts the referee, preventing Triple H from hitting a match winning Pedigree. Jacobs capitalises with a quick roll-up, but once more Triple H kicks out. All of the plucky underdog enthusiasm in the world isn't enough, however, to combat the inevitable sledgehammer shot - and Triple H picks up a dirty win over a courageous Jimmy Jacobs after nailing him with a Pedigree in a match of the evening candidate.

After the match Ric Flair and Triple H stare one another off.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break as the main event unfolds, with the unlikely team of Kurt Angle and John Cena making their way out to the ring. Cena and Angle clearly don't want to be near one another, and almost come to blows whilst waiting for their opponents. Edge and Shawn Michaels are likewise an unlikely alliance, and it looks like the match will set tempers on edge.

MATCH EIGHT - John Cena & Kurt Angle vs. Shawn Michaels & Edge
Things start out with the less volatile pairing of Edge and HBK in control of Cena, who is eventually forced to tap out to Angle. Angle manages to steady the ship some, but HBK is in fine form and Angle eventually 'tags' out to Cena by hitting him. Cena comes in and manages to turn the tides, taking HBK close to submission with the STFU, with Edge's timely interference saving his partner. Edge and Michaels begin to double team Cena and, much to the crowd's annoyance, Angle refuses to enter the ring to help. Cena eventually battles free, sends Edge to the outside, and picks Michaels up for the F-U.... nails it! Cover. 1-2-3! Cena defeats Edge and Michaels after his partner walked out on him. As he celebrates, however, Edge hits him with a Spear.

The night ends with Cena down, HBK down, Edge standing triumphant, and Angle shaking his head at the top of the ramp.

WWE Smackdown kicks off with a promo for the upcoming Royal Rumble, with the announcement that next week will see the beginning of Royal Rumble qualifying matches on both Smackdown and Raw. The first superstar appearance of the evening is Bobby Lashley with Ted DiBiase. The Million Dollar Man talks about how his charger, Lashley, will be a force to be reckoned with in this year's Rumble - but tonight he has a key match against the Nation of Domination's Rikishi in the tournament to decide a contender to Booker T's US Title.

MATCH ONE - Lashley vs. Rikishi
The Nation of Domination's leader, Faarooq, accompanies Rikishi to the ring for this one - although there's no sign of Samoa Joe, who has already progressed to the semi finals of the tournament after an early victory over Psicosis. Things start off with these two big men slugging it out, before Lashley begins to control things. The referee is eventually pulled from the ring by Faarooq, who nails him with a clothesline. He then gets into the ring, but Lashley is able to nail him with his own former finisher, the Dominator. He turns around right into a superkick from Rikishi, however, and the arriving referee is there to count. KICKOUT! Rikishi is stunned as Lashley fires up in intensity, battles him into a corner, and then nails him with a breathtaking superplex for the 1-2-3. Lashley will face the winner of next week's match between William Regal and his mystery opponent!

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break to find Matt Hardy backstage with Todd Grisham. He conducts a brief interview about his unfinished business with Randy Orton, but says tonight he is focussed on beating Sylvan in a 'warm up match'.

MATCH TWO - Matt Hardy vs. Sylvan
The French 'supermodel' is already in the ring when Matt Hardy's music hits and the crowd pop. This is a short, one-sided bout that features Hardy showcasing all of his offence before hitting the Twist of Fate for an easy win.

A video is played hyping the recent feud between Ken Kennedy and The Rock, with the announcement that the two will face off once again at this year's Royal Rumble.

MATCH THREE - Ken Kennedy vs. Paul London
Kennedy is out running his mouth when Paul London interrupts him by rushing down to the ring. The two begin to exchange blows, and Kennedy gets in firm control from the outset. London's offence is continually stifled by Kennedy's size advantage, but that all changes when The Rock's music hits and the People's Champion makes his way to the announce table. This distracts Kennedy, who takes a dropkick to the back and tumbles to the outside. Rock remarks about 'something being spilt' and goes to Kennedy. The two recent enemies brawl, with Rocky getting the upper hand and tossing Kennedy back into the ring. London goes up top for the London Calling, but the arrival of JBL and a chair halts things - London given the win by DQ after JBL cracks it across his back. The Rock is quick to hit the ring and the pair brawl, which brings out Teddy Long. He announces that JBL will face The Rock tonight.

COMMERCIAL

Booker T is out in the ring boasting about how his US Title run will be remembered as one of the greatest in the title's history. He mocks the Theodore Long organised tournament to decide a contender, saying that no one in the eight man competition can be considered a threat to his greatness. This brings out Rey Mysterio, who claims that Booker T has forgotten what makes this business great - he's forgotten the fans. He says tonight he's going to end the reign before the fans die of boredom.

MATCH FOUR - Booker T (c) vs. Rey Mysterio for the US Title
Things get underway with this match evenly matched, both competitors having periods of control but never looking like they've got the edge to win it. Booker T's heelish antics eventually give him control of the match, the 'Bookerman' thumbing Rey's eye and then signalling for the Axe Kick. Rey is able to get away in time, dropkick Booker T, and then signals for the 619. He hits it! Rey goes to the outside for the West Coast Pop, but Sharmell is on hand to trip him up. Booker staggers over, hits the Book End, and wraps up the title defence thanks to an assist from his diabolical wife.

Booker T and Sharmell celebrate as we cut to commercial.

COMMERCIAL

MATCH FIVE - LOD 2005 vs. The Mexicools
There's very little hype going into this clash between two of the premier tag teams on Smackdown, although MNM do come ringside to watch this bout which could decide a contender for their Tag Titles. This is a good, fast flowing match between two popular teams - with LOD 2005 picking up the unexpected victory after hitting the Doomsday Device on Super Crazy. After the match MNM hit the ring, beating down the victorious team and posing with their tag titles.

We then go backstage for a trademark Rock promo. The People's Champion talks about how JBL's title reign will be remembered as one of the most eye-wateringly bad reigns in WWE history. It's right up there with the title reigns of Doink the Clown and The Red Rooster. He pauses, asks if we remember them, and then says that's exactly how people will be when they walk about JBL in years to come.

MATCH SIX - The Rock vs. John Bradshaw Layfield
This is an old fashioned slobber-knocker between two guys who have been in the business for quite some time. It starts off with brutal brawling before The Rock is able to back JBL into a corner, spit on his palm, and lay some smack down. JBL soon fires back with some heelish offence before attempting the Clothesline from Hell, which Rocky ducks before coming back with a flying elbow. He hits a Spinebuster and signals for the People's Elbow, but JBL is up and almost decapitates him with the Clothesline from Hell. 1-2-KICKOUT! Rocky manages to get a shoulder up like only he can. The battle continues and, eventually, Rocky is able to capture JBL and lay him out with the Rock Bottom. The People's Elbow follows, and The Rock picks up the 1-2-3.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the commercial for a short Chris Benoit promo about fulfilling his destiny and becoming the World champion.

MATCH SEVEN - Randy Orton (c) vs. Chris Benoit
In the match of the night these two men pull out all of the stops. There's nothing between them in the early going, with Bob Orton's presence keeping Orton in it when Benoit's intensity and experience looks like it could take him to a shock title win. It's a too and fro match full of memorable clashes, PPV worthy of course, but it comes to an end when Benoit hits the triple German suplexes and goes up top for his Suicide Headbutt. Bob Orton trips him up and Orton is on hand to rush up and hit a top rope RKO for the 1-2-3. As he celebrates, however, Hulk Hogan hits the ring and drops him with a Big Boot. He comes off the ropes... LEG DROP! Hogan has sent a loud and clear message to Randy Orton!

Scoring
Bobby Lashley: Win (+5) = 5
Matt Hardy: Win (+5) = 5
Paul London: Win (+5) = 5
Booker T: Win (+5) and Title Defence (+3) = 8
Sharmell: Interference (+1) = 1
Heidenreich: Win (+5) = 5
Road Warrior Animal: Win (+5) = 5
The Rock: Win (+5) and Interference (+1) = 6
John Bradshaw Layfield: Interference (+1) = 1
Randy Orton: Win (+5) and Title Defence (+3) = 8
Bob Orton: Interference (+1) = 1

New Year's Revolution 2006

The roof near comes off Reliant Stadium as New Year's Revolution kicks off what promises to be a boom 2006 for the WWE. The fans cheer as Trish Stratus makes her way out to the ring, the popular Women's Champion getting an ovation as she is accompanied to the ring by Mickie James. Next out is the challenger, Victoria, who is accompanied by Candice Michelle.

MATCH ONE - Trish Stratus (c) vs. Victoria for the Women's Title
This one is basically what fans have come to expect from the WWE's faltering women's division, with the company's two most experienced in ring workers turning on an enjoyable but ultimately forgettable match. The sole highlight comes when Candice Michelle breaks her wand across Trish's back, allowing Victoria to roll the champion up for a near fall. This brings Mickie James into the ring, and she begins to brawl with Candice as the referee struggles to get control of things. James is cleaning house but her trademark kick to the midsection misses the mark and accidentally catches a recovering Trish. Victoria clotheslines James from the ring and nails Trish with the Widow's Peak. 1-2-3! Victoria steals victory thanks to an inadvertent assist from Mickie James! Mickie attempts to apologise but Trish wants none of it. She storms off as Victoria and Candice Michelle celebrate their ill gained victory.

Next up is the Battle Royal to decide who will face the winner of tonight's clash between Shelton Benjamin and Carlito in an Intercontinental Title match at Royal Rumble. The competitors are Goldust, Chavo Guerrero, Matt Striker, Jimmy Jacobs, Joey Ryan, Eugene, Tajiri, Viscera, Devon Storm and Chris Masters.

MATCH TWO - Intercontinental Contenders Battle Royal
The start is essentially a cluster-f**k and the fans aren't really into it as Matt Striker is given the Curtain Call by Goldust and then dropkicked to the outside by Chavo. Chavo almost gets tossed out by Masters but is able to skin the cat to get back into the ring. Meanwhile Goldust continues to do his weird fans proud, ducking a Berserker Boot from Jacobs and then clotheslining him to the outside. Tajiri is cleaning house with some solid kicks and, with some help from Viscera, is able to send Joey Ryan to the outside without much ceremony.

Eugene, who hasn't been seen on Raw in ages, gets a mild pop when he is able to hit Devon Storm with the Rock Bottom, getting help from Goldust and Chavo in eliminating CM Punk's erstwhile ally. That leaves Tajiri, Eugene, Goldust, Chavo Guerrero, Chris Masters, and Viscera fighting for a shot at the intercontinental title. Eugene is next eliminated when he is trapped in the Masterlock before being press slammed to the outside by Masters - who adds Tajiri to his list of scalps when the Japanese star attempts to lock in the Tarantula but only succeeds in being lifted and dropped to the outside. Viscera is next out when he finds himself triple teamed by the remaining survivors - and Goldust follows suit when Chavo Guerrero double crosses him and sends him to the outside with a suplex. It's down to the Masterpiece and Chavo Guerrero, and the two battle it out before Chavo is able to lay out Masters with a superplex. He whips Masters, ducks a clothesline, and dropkicks Masters - who tumbles back into the ropes. Chavo charges, Masters backdrops him over to the apron, and Chavo attempts a suplex.... HE GETS IT! Chavo suplexes Masters to the floor and is the #1 contender to the Intercontinental Title!

Next up is the World Tag Title match, but first we see a vignette highlighting the growing tension between Kane and Big show of late.

MATCH THREE - Kane & Big Show vs. TNT (c) for the World Tag Titles
These two teams have worked better matches, and this one comes as something of a let down following their earlier bouts. It's a fairly brutal affair, with the bigger pairing in control until they begin to argue. This allows Cade to low blow Big Show whilst the referee is busy with Kane - allowing Murdoch to cover for the pinfall and the win.

After the match Kane begins to berate Big Show, who is clearly embarassed at having lost his side the match. He attempts to apologise but Kane responds with a chokeslam! Kane has laid out his tag team partner and his pyros hit to emphasize the point!

Next up Rob Conway struts out for an unannounced Legend's Challenge. He begins to talk about all of the sterling work he's done lately - brushing over his recent loss to Ric Flair and saying he's got a special guest tonight - the man who invented talk shows. This brings out 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper, who seems willing to conduct a proper interview until Conway's ego begins to irritate him. He swings at Conway, the bell rings, and we've got ourselves a match!

MATCH FOUR - Rob Conway vs. Roddy Piper
Believe it or not, but this is the best match of the night thus far. Whilst Piper's best days are behind him, Conway hides his weaknesses well in a fairly basic but still enjoyable brawl that goes hardcore quite quickly. Things spill to the outside where Conway is soon split open by a brutal Piper chairshot, but he returns the favour by putting Piper back first through the Spanish announce table.

The clash eventually gets back into the ring, where Piper is able to lock in the Sleeper Hold much to the delight of the crowd. Conway prevents his Legend's Challenge record from being further tarnished by driving Piper spine first into the turnbuckle and then nailing him with an Ego Trip. 1-2-3! Conway wins an epic bout with a true legend! He shows no respect to Piper, however, spitting on the fallen worker before leaving to heavy heat.

Next up is the grudge match between CM Punk and Val Venis, but first a video is played to hype the rise of CM Punk since debuting.

MATCH FIVE - CM Punk vs. Val Venis
There's plenty of heat in the initial exchange of blows here, with Val Venis getting the upper hand and backing Punk into a corner. He is forced to lay off for a moment by the referee, and Punk draws the ire of the crowd by punting the Big Valbowski in the crotch. This allows him to get in control for quite some time, wearing down Venis with submission holds. He eventually locks in a sleeper hold but Val is able to battle out of it, dropping Punk to the mat with a jawbreaker before signalling for the Money Shot. He's up top too long, however, and Punk is able to scramble up the turnbuckle... PEPSI PLUNGE! 1-2-3! It's over. Punk snatches victory from the jaws of defeat, and couldn't have looked much more in control doing it!

The fans get on their feet as Shelton Benjamin makes his way out for his Intercontinental Title defence against Carlito, who won a four way match on last week's edition of Raw for the right to face Shelton. The commentary team make sure to mention that it was Carlito who ended Shelton's lengthy Intercontinental Title run in 2005 - debuting on Raw during the draft and snatching the title from the confident champion.

MATCH SIX - Shelton Benjamin (c) vs. Carlito for the IC Title
Fans may remember that these two worked some fairly enjoyable matches in the middle of 2005, and this clash is nothing different. It's not a world beater of a match, nor is it bad - it's just a solid middle of the card bout to lead into the bigger matches. Both workers exchange offence, with Shelton the more dominant, but the shock result comes when Shelton stalls too long on the top in setting up his flying clothesline - as he flies he cops a faceful of apple! Carlito hits his Final Cut for the shock 1-2-3! Shelton can't believe it, but Carlito is already celebrating his way up the ramp. Just weeks after reclaiming his Intercontinental Title Shelton Benjamin has dropped it!

Next up is the much anticipated feud deciding battle between Ric Flair and Triple H, which is set to be decided in a brutal Street Fight. The match is preceded by a lengthy video hyping the pair's rivallry, stretching right back to the brutal assault on Raw Homecoming.

MATCH SEVEN - Triple H vs. Ric Flair in a Street Fight
There's no love lost between these two, and this one starts off with an old fashioned chop fest which Flair predcitably wins. He whips Triple H and drops him to the mat with another sharp chop before strutting and dropping a pair of knees into his former ally's chest. It doesn't take long for the brutal side of the match to shine, Flair removing the padding from a turnbuckle and bouncing Triple H's head off it a few times. Hunter eventually blocks, though, and treats Flair to more of the same before bringing a knee up into his head and going to the outside for what looks to be a barb wire wrapped chair.

The fans flinch in pain as he cracks it across Flair's back twice before brutally scraping it across his face. The blood is well and truly flowing as Triple H signals for a Pedigree, but Flair avoids a potentially fatal plunge into the barbed wire by back dropping Triple H. He's wearing a mask of blood but shows no signs of giving up. He gets the crowd going with a 'woo' or two before going under the ring for none other than Triple H's own trademark sledgehammer. The fans go crazy as he smashes it across Triple H's back, sending the Game to the outside. As he Flair reaches out for his opponent, Triple H retaliates by spraying what looks to be mace into the Nature Boy's eyes! Ric Flair staggers back into the ring where Triple H manages to wrest the hammer from his grip and crack him across the skull with it. He then Pedigrees Flair onto the barbed wire wrapped chair. Cover.... KICKOUT! Flair manages to kick out of the Pedigree, much to Triple H's shock. He attempts a second but Flair shows his customary tenacity by burying a fist in Triple H's groin. He then brings a knee up into Hunter's face and locks on the Figure Four! Triple H is in a world of hurt, but manages to use his sledgehammer to bash Flair's legs. Flair can barely stand as he is treated to his second Pedigree! 1-2-3! Triple H wraps it up in an epic match!

The final match of the evening is set to be the four way elimination match between John Cena, Shawn Michaels, Edge, and Kurt Angle. The champion comes out to a fairly positive response, although the real cheers seem to be reserved for Shawn Michaels. Edge, Lita, and Angle are all out to heavy heat.

MATCH EIGHT - Kurt Angle vs. John Cena (c) vs. Edge vs. Shawn Michaels for the WWE World Title
The fans alternate between chanting for Cena, Michaels, and (surprisingly) Angle in the early going of this one. All three of the challengers go after Cena early on, the champion going to the outside after copping a trio of German suplexes from Angle and narrowly avoiding Sweet Chin Music from HBK. Edge is on hand to 'Edgu-cute' the Heartbreak Kid for a near fall, but HBK isn't beaten so easily. Angle goes to the outside to pursue Cena whilst Edge and Michaels battle in the ring - laying one another out with a double clothesline.

On the outside Cena and Angle brawl in standard fashion, Angle getting the upper hand when he whips Cena into the ringpost and attempts the Angle Slam - which Cena is able to roll free of. He kicks Angle in the gut and signals for the F-U with 'You Can't See Me', but Angle grabs onto the bottom rope and is able to escape. Edge, back to his feet, treats Angle to a baseball slide for his troubles, before being dragged out of the ring by Cena. Cena throws a punch but Edge blocks it and drops Cena face first into the mat with a DDT. As he turns around HBK sails over the top rope with a flying crossbody, and now all four men are down!

The fans are chanting for their favourites as Michaels and Angle stagger to their feet. Angle punches Michaels in the midsection and rolls him back into the ring before attempting to lock in the Angle Lock. Michaels rolls through the hold and Angle goes shoulder first into the ring post just as Edge gets into the ring and absolutely nails Michaels with the Spear! Cover... 1....2.....no! Michaels is again able to kick out. Cena is still on the outside but is staggering to his feet as Edge pounds the mat in frustration. Lita rushes at Cena with Edge's Money in the Bank contract, but Cena is able to wrestle it from her. As Edge reaches out of the ring to grab Cena, the champion pounds him across the face with it! Edge stumbles backwards into a Shawn Michaels' rollup! 1-2-3! Edge has been eliminated! Michaels' celebrations are short lived, however, as Angle is on hand to fold him up with a brutal bridging German suplex! Cena is in to make the save, although God knows why.

HBK now rolls to the outside, leaving Cena to face off against his longtime enemy. The two brawl some more, Cena whipped and responding with his trademark shoulder block. He then hits his Killswitch and we know what's coming next. FIVE KNUCKLE SHUFFLE! Cena hits it and covers, but Angle is able to get a shoulder up at the last second - getting a louder cheer than he probably should. Cena staggers around in disbelief only to cop Sweet Chin Music from the returning Michaels, who is unable to make the cover as Angle rolls him up with a handful of tights. 1-2-kickout! With Cena out of comission, the veteran pair begin to wow the crowd with the kind of match they're known for, with both men exchanging offence before Michaels is able to roll out of a Angle Slam and drill Angle in the teeth with Sweet Chin Music! Before he can cover, however, Cena is able to lay him out with the F-U! He covers both men. 1-2-3! Michaels kicks out, but Angle is unable to meet the count! It's down to John Cena and Shawn Michaels here!

Cena drags Michaels to his feet and whips him, but is caught in a reverse atomic drop from the veteran Michaels. He then goes to the top rope for the flying elbow drop, but Cena recovers in time to go to the top and catch him. TOP ROPE F-U! Michaels is in Disneyland!

John Cena retains! The champion celebrates, but the crowd seem less than impressed by the result despite the extreme competitiveness of the match. As Cena stands tall the cameras fade.

It's the night after New Year's Revolution and what better way to kick it off than with highlights of the pay-per-view? Key in the replay are TNT's shock victory over Kane & Big Show, Carlito stealing the Intercontinental Title from Shelton Benjamin, and John Cena managing to retain his title in an epic four way match up.

The show proper starts with Shelton Benjamin watching highlights from his loss to Carlito. He shakes his head in frustration and heads out into the hallway, where he soon corners Eric Bischoff. Benjamin demands a rematch against Carlito, but Bischoff reminds him that Carlito already has a match against Goldust tonight. He offers Shelton an alternative match, though: A chance to qualify for the Royal Rumble against Tajiri, later tonight.

MATCH ONE - Victoria (c) vs. Mickie James for the Women's Championship
Before this one can get underway, Victoria gets on the mike and 'thanks' Mickie James for helping her beat Trish Stratus at New Year's Revolution. She says she isn't an ungrateful person, and this match is Mickie's reward.

The match itself is nothing spectacular, with Victoria able to retain her title after a short clash due to the interference of Candice Michelle. After the match the two divas beat down Mickie, whilst the commentary team question the absence of Trish Stratus.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break to find The Big Show and Kane in their dressing room. There's obvious tension in the room as Steve Romero enters to conduct an interview. He asks the two big men what cost them their match. Big Show says they were just not focussed enough, but Kane responds 'Big Show cost us our match'. Big Show questions this, and soon the two giants are brawling. Bischoff and his security team are quick to intervene, with Bischoff making a match for later tonight to release some steam.

MATCH TWO: TNT (c) vs. V2
The tag champions look fresh in this one, as does Val Venis for having competed at last night's pay-per-view, whilst Viscera looks a little tired. This is a fairly standard title defence for the champions, with Cade pinning Viscera after using the titles to take the big man down.

As we cut to commercial we see John Cena arriving, with the fans divided between girlish cheering and the more masculine boos.

COMMERCIAL

MATCH THREE: Carlito (c) vs. Goldust
Prior to the match, highlights of Carlito's victory over Shelton Benjamin at New Year's Revolution are played. Carlito remarks about how 'cool' it was to beat Shelton, but Goldust's bizarre entrance interrupts him. This match is remarkably good, with the two workers complimenting one another brilliantly. Not only do they work a similar match style, but their comical personalities make for some hilarious moments - including Goldust 'seductively' biting one of Carlito's apples and, at another point, snuggling up at Carlito's afro.

The match ends somewhat abruptly, however, with Carlito able to roll Goldust up whilst the odd superstar argued with the referee.

Once again we got to commercial with footage of a worker preparing, with Shelton Benjamin strapping his fists as we go to break.

COMMERCIAL

MATCH FOUR: Shelton Benjamin vs. Tajiri in a Royal Rumble Qualifier
The fans are all on Shelton's side for this one, although there's scattered cheers whenever the Japanese Buzzsaw manages to pull off some particularly inventive offence. The match itself is good, but short, with Shelton able to drill Tajiri with the T-Bone Suplex for a win and a place in the Royal Rumble. His celebrations are cut short, however, when Eric Bischoff struts out.

Eric: Congratulations, Shelton, you've just qualified to be entrant #1 in the 2006 Royal Rumble. Best of luck!

The fans boo as Shelton nods in what appears to be enthusiasm. Could it be that he likes the idea of attempting to go coast to coast?

COMMERCIAL

The arena lights up as Kane stalks out to the ring for his confrontation with Big Show. The fans are on Big Show's side here.

MATCH FIVE: Kane vs. The Big Show
This is a fairly brutal encounter, and there's plenty of feeling in it from the get go. It's an old fashioned slug-fest between the business' two premier big men - and Kane gets the upper hand early by clotheslining Show to the outside and brutally beating him with a chair. Big Show eventually turns the tide, chokeslamming Kane through a table to the delight of the crowd. Things spill back into the ring eventually, where the two bleeding men manage to 'lock' in chokeslams at the same time. They strain against one another for a moment before Kane is able to kick Show in the midsection and bury him! 1-2-3! It's over. Kane scores a victory over his former tag team partner.

Kane doesn't appear satisfied, however, and proceeds to attack Show with a chair - driving it into his throat and crushing his arms with it. We go to break as security tries to summon the courage to confront the big red machine.

COMMERCIAL

The ring is all set up for Rob Conway's Legends Challenge when we return, with the cocky superstar introducing his guest as the longest reigning Intercontinental Champion of all time. The Honky Tonky Man comes out to an ovation fitting of his status, his trademark guitar at his side. Conway starts interviewing him legitimately before asking what it feels like to be remembered for holding a second rate title. Before Honky can respond, Conway blasts him across the head with his own guitar and signals for the referee to start the match.

MATCH SIX: Rob Conway vs. The Honky Tonk Man
With Honky Tonk already down from a chair blast, this isn't so much a match as it is a beat-down. Conway picks him up, drills him with the Ego Trip, and then covers for a quick win.

COMMERCIAL

Back from the break and the fans are booing as CM Punk walks out to the ring. He replays highlights of his defeat of Val Venis at New Year's Revolution, citing his victory as proof that people who engage in extra-marital affairs and other debauchery are weak. He then moves on to insult drinkers and the like, and this brings out Eugene. Eugene talks about how his hero, Stone Cold Steve Austin, is a drinker. CM Punk says Stone Cold is a wife-beating drunk. Eugene says CM Punk is a coward. Punk tells him to get his ass in the ring and he'll see who the coward is.

MATCH SEVEN: CM Punk vs. Eugene
The fans are on Eugene's side here, but it's all CM Punk from the get go. He blindsides Eugene as he crawls into the ring, and doesn't relinquish control either. After beating on him in the ring for a while, Punk goes to the outside where he fetches a chair. He blasts Eugene with it repeatedly, forcing the referee to award the match to Eugene via DQ. Punk doesn't seem to care though, and he splits Eugene open before dragging him up to the top rope and hitting the Pepsi Plunge. Eugene is a bloody mess after CM Punk's beating!

COMMERCIAL

We're in the dressing room of Triple H and he's not alone, as the tag team champions (Lance Cade and Trevor Murdoch) are popping open a bottle of champagne. Triple H toasts the three men's respective victories of late, but they're interrupted by the arrival of Ric Flair. Cade and Murdoch wrestle Flair up against the wall.
HHH: What do you want, old man? I beat your ass yesterday.
Flair: You may have beaten me, but I'm still alive and kicking. WOOOO! I want one more match, Hunter. I want one last chance to prove what a no good, lying son of a bitch you are. Woooo!
HHH: You're out of your mind, Flair. Why should I give you another chance? You've been tested and you've been found wanting. You know what's sadder than an old man who refuses to admit defeat? An animal that just won't die. It's legs are broken and it's struggling to stand, but deep down it knows its time has come. You're that animal, Flair, and I don't see the gain for me in putting you out of your misery when I derive such amusement from watching you struggle. (To TNT) Get this piece of sh*t out of my sight.

We cut to where Shawn Michaels is standing with Ashley Massaro. She asks him how he feels after last night. He says he's sore and he's disappointed, but he wouldn't be the showstopper if he didn't dust himself and get right back into the thick of things. He then cuts a fairly generic face promo about how he will beat Edge and Angle and become #1 contender.

COMMERCIAL

MATCH EIGHT: Shawn Michaels vs. Edge vs. Kurt Angle for #1 Contendership
Whilst this clash isn't on a par with the four way from New Year's Revolution, there's still plenty to like about this one. The two heels start things off by double teaming Shawn Michaels into submission - tossing the veteran out of the ring after a fairly brutal beating. Their alliance doesn't last too long, however, with Edge attempting to hit the Edgucution on Angle as soon as Michaels is out of the picture. Angle shoves Edge into the ropes and, on the rebound, doubles him up with a bridging German Suplex for two. Edge rolls to the outside to recover, where Lita is quick to comfort him. She screams as Shawn Michaels approaches, dropping Edge with a dropkick from behind. Angle grabs Michaels by the hair as he aims to capitalise, but HBK drops him throat first onto the ropes with a guillotine. In turn he's tripped by Lita, who drags his feet off the apron and buys Edge the time needed to hit a brutal spear into the security barrier. Edge rolls Michaels back into the ring where he and Angle stomp on him before Angle blindsides Edge, attempting to hit the Angle Slam. Edge rolls free and walks right into Sweet Chin Music! Angle rushes at HBK, who ducks an attempted clothesline and delivers his second Sweet Chin Music! Both men are down! Michaels covers Edge. 1-2-3! Shawn Michaels is #1 contender and he'll face Cena at the Royal Rumble!

The night ends with HBK staring down Cena, who has appeared at the top of the ramp. The fans seem to have sided with Michaels, and Cena talks trash as the show ends.

Whoops, my bad. I took the leaderboard from the show before the PPV, rather than the one from after NYR. It's fixed now.

Smackdown kicks off to the usual pyrotechnical wizardy with Michael Cole and Tazz discussing the two tournaments currently taking place - those for a shot at Booker T's US Title and another to decide who would enter at position #30 in the 2006 Royal Rumble. First up tonight is apparently William Regal vs. Paul Birchall in the US Title Tournament.

We cut backstage to where Ted DiBiase is with Paul Birchall, whose contract he won after Lashley defeated Birchall at Armageddon. DiBiase is delivering an inspirational speech when suddenly he is thrown forward by the attack of a hooded man. Birchall doesn't have time to react before he is cracked across the head with a chair. Security arrives too late, with the assailant having bloodied Birchall and left him incapicitated. Will he be able to make his match?

The Mexicools are out in the ring for their match and are somewhat surprised when the bWo's music hits and the pairing of Steven Richards and Simon 'Nova' Dean come out mimicking Hogan and Nash of NWO fame.

MATCH ONE - The Mexicools vs. bWo
This is an average match from two experienced pairs of ECW allumni. The Mexicools come across looking the stronger, but Dean & Richards certainly get plenty of offence in as well. Ultimately the Mexicools pick up a win after Super Crazy hits Richards with the tri-fecta moonsault.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break to find an enraged Ted DiBiase in Theodore Long's office. He's demanding that something be done about the attack on Birchall, but Long can't do anything without knowing who did it and says that unless Birchall can work the match - Regal will get a bye through to the next round. Lashley steps forward and asks if Long will accept a substitute. Long's response is "Sure, playa, but it can't be you - you're already in the tournament". He sends a pointed look at DiBiase as the camera fades.

MATCH TWO - Scotty 2 Hotty vs. Gregory Helms
Before the match, Helms cuts a promo on how he intends to brutalise Juventud at Royal Rumble and bring some respectability back to the cruiserweight title. The match itself is a decent example of the division, with the foregone conclusion coming about when Helms absolutely destroys Hotty with the Vertabreaker.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break as William Regal struts out to the ring. The cameras find black material like that of the hood from the assailant tucked into the back of his tights. He waits in the ring for his opponent, and the fans go crazy as Ted DiBiase's music hits and the million dollar man comes down to the ring. Looks like DiBiase is the replacement!

MATCH THREE - William Regal vs. Ted DiBiase in the US Title Tournament
Despite the legendary status of DiBiase, he's never really in this one - with the much fitter and much more fresh Regal controlling things well. At one point Regal does get a little too cocky, and DiBiase begins to lock in the Million Dollar Dream - a move that gets the crowd going crazy. Ultimately, however, Regal's match fitness shines through and he's able to continue through in the tournament after using the power of the punch.

As Regal celebrates, however, Lashley's music hits and the one man army rushes down to the ring. He blindsides Regal and drills him with the dominator, leaving his opponent for next week down and out.

COMMERCIAL

We return from the break in Theodore Long's office once more, and there's heavy booing as the camera pans to show Eric Bischoff sitting across from Long. The two seem to be discussing the details of their eight man tournament to decide who the 30th man in the Royal Rumble will be. They announce that the competitors will be Rey Mysterio, CM Punk, Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, Chris Benoit, Shelton Benjamin, The Rock, and Edge.

MATCH FOUR - Matt Hardy vs. Rikishi
Rikishi is again accompanied to ringside by Samoa Joe and Faarooq, but it's all Matt Hardy in this one. Whilst the interference does become an issue, it's stopped when Hardy catapults himself over the top rope and begins to brawl with the Nation of Domination. The referee ejects them from ringside but the distraction is enough to allow Rikishi to set Hardy up for the Rikishi Driver! He nails it, but Hardy somehow kicks out at the last moment. The battle continues, and Hardy is eventually able to pick up a hard fought win with the Twist of Fate.

Backstage we find Orton watching the match and shaking his head. He's looking just a little bit nervous.

COMMERCIAL

The fans cheer as Chris Benoit appears on screen with Mick Foley, conducting one of his frank interviews. Benoit talks about the thrill of winning a Royal Rumble from position #1 and how he's not afraid to have to do that again. But he's going to go out there and give it his all - because that's what he does. He talks about respecting Benjamin but says that, in the ring, he'll show no mercy.

MATCH FIVE - Chris Benoit vs. Shelton Benjamin in the Rumble Tournament
This one is one of those matches that will doubtless be looked at as a potential Match of the Year candidate when it's all said and done. The two world class technical workers put on a display of chain wrestling and counters that boggles the mind, rivalling the work done by Benjamin and Michaels on the Gold Rush Tournament in 2005. It's almost impossible to tell who has the advantage at any given moment, with both workers seemlessly going from offence to defence in a sixteen minute odyessy of a match. The fans alternate between cheering for Benjamin and Benoit dependent on who has the upper hand.

The finish comes with Benoit attempting to hit a German suplex, but Benjamin flips out of it and almost decapitates Benoit with a superkick in retaliation. There's a cover, but Benoit somehow turns the attempted pin into the Crossface - and now Benjamin's in a world of trouble. There's moments of tension as Shelton tries to reach the ropes but Benoit's not relinquishing the hold. Benjamin taps! Benoit progresses through after an epic match!

COMMERCIAL

The break ends and the crowd boo as Samoa Joe and Faarooq make their way out to the ring. The pair talk about being unfairly targetted by WWE management and cite their ejection from ringside as evidence. Their promo is interrupted, however, when Paul London & Brian Kendrick rush out for what seems to be an impromptu match.

MATCH SIX - The Nation of Domination vs. London & Kendrick
Despite the obvious styles clash, this match is actually quite good. The Nation's power moves are made to look stronger by the selling of the smaller pairing - who have no shortage of high impact moves to bring out either. London, in particular, shines in this bout - hitting the fabled London Calling on Faarooq at one point for a near fall. Ultimately the winners are decided by power, with Samoa Joe able to catch Kendrick up top and near bury him with the Muscle Buster.

After the clash the Nation celebrate whilst London & Kendrick console one another.

COMMERCIAL

The break ends with a video hyping the debut of someone calling themselves The Alpha Male. The video itself features footage of predators in the wild bringing down animals, and ends with the POOOOOOOOOUNCE.... PERIOD!

The fans boo as we see CM Punk preparing for his match backstage.

MATCH SIX - CM Punk vs. Rey Mysterio in the Rumble Tournament
The fans are clearly on Mysterio's side for this one, and in the early going it's all one way traffic as he pulls out some big moves to keep Punk floored. Gradually Punk is able to fight his way back into the clash, using subtle eye gouges and such to put Mysterio on the back foot. That's not to say he doesn't have any legitimate offence, at one point getting to his feet in time to turn an attempted West Coast Pop into an atomic drop. The end comes with Mysterio up top signalling for a leg drop, but Punk is able to scurry up to the top, hit him in the gut, and pull out the Pepsi Plunge! He makes the cover with his feet on the rope, and wins it! CM Punk has upset Mysterio in a tremendous match!

After the win CM Punk celebrates as if he'd won Olympic Gold.

COMMERCIAL

The fans go absolutely ballistic as we return from the commercial to both The Rock and Hulk Hogan in the ring. The two cut their characteristic promos, with the fans reaching almost orgasmic levels of markage at the sheer charisma that oozes from the two men. Unfortunately, their promos are cut short by the arrival of their tag team opponents.

MATCH SEVEN - Hogan & Rock vs. JBL & Kennedy
This is another tremendous match to round off what's been a stellar Smackdown match quality wise. The four men involved are all brawlers and they all put on a great show as they exchange offence in what feels like a tornado tag. Kennedy and Rock go right after one another from the outset, with Kennedy getting in control when the brawling spills outside. The legal men, Hogan and JBL, put on a very old school match - which almost ends when Hogan drops the big boot and signals for the Leg Drop of Doom - only to have Kennedy attack him from behind. They whip the legend and JBL near decapitates him with the Clothesline from Hell. He in turn gets a Rock Bottom for his troubles, before Rocky is clotheslined to the outside by Kennedy. JBL and Hogan both stagger to their feet and JBL gets on the offensive, but Hogan begins to hulk up! Here it comes.... Big Boot! Once again JBL feels the sting and it's on.... LEG DROP! Hogan hits the leg drop. The crowd count it. 1-2-3! Hogan and Rocky are victorious, as outside we see Rock drive Kennedy face first into the stairs. He throws his opponent into the ring where Hogan hits him with a big boot. PEOPLE'S ELBOW! Rocky finishes the night off with the elbow, and the faces stand tall!

Scoring

Royal Rumble Card Rumours

As reported earlier in the week, it is expected that the twin main events will be:
John Cena (c) vs. Shawn Michaels (RAW Title Match)
AND
Hulk Hogan vs. Randy Orton (c) vs. Matt Hardy (Smackdown Title Match)

Also expected to feature on the card is a Hell in a Cell match between Triple H & Ric Flair, a four way tag title match from Smackdown, defences of the Intercontinental, US, and Cruiserweight Titles - and the Royal Rumble match itself.

Expected to return in the near future are the likes of Muhammed Hassan and Batista, whilst the debuts of AJ Styles and Monty Brown are said to be not far off. Whether any or all of these superstars will debut in the Royal Rumble match-up remains to be seen.

It has also been reported that the WWE is in negotiations with former big men Bill Goldberg and Brock Lesnar, although what role these two would play remains unclear given their coloured histories with the company. Lesnar, currently working in TNA, is said to be keen to get back into the WWE - whilst overtures to former WWE allumni Chris Jericho (working in Japan), Christian (TNA), and Sting (CHIKARA) have proven fruitless thus far.

Boy what a card. You normally don't see a Hell In A Cell match not one of the main events. Looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Quick question for my readers (however many that may be), but who do you think would be a good choice to win the Royal Rumble - assuming the current champions remain?

I'm still open to suggestions/requests/ideas with regards to the whole thing.
