I ask because your line of logic sounds remarkably similar to the Catholic Church's when discussing the shroud - they claim the shroud was a genuine burial cloth, and it probably belonged to Jesus, but they then claim it is not proof of his resurrection. Can't have it both ways.

I'm reading Thomas De Wesselow's book "The Sign", and he makes some fascinating points about sceptics criticising the authenticity of the shroud because in declaring that it was genuine, they were giving in to the "silliness" if religion - despite the fact that many open sceptics privately believed the shroud to be genuine.

Point is, public opinion doesn't necessarily validate everything.
