From the Sydney Morning Herald today:
....Meanwhile, Dragons coach Nathan Brown and one of his star players, prop Jason Ryles, have declined to enter into a slanging match with Mark Geyer over comments Geyer made in his Rugby League Week column.
Geyer nominated Ryles as the NRL's most overrated player, saying: "I have gone with a front-rower who hasn't made an impact at any level for the past few seasons. [Ryles] spends a heap of time out injured and when he is on the field gives away far too many penalties and pushes too many risky passes."
Asked if he wished to respond, Ryles, who also finished second to Anasta in the most overrated section in the poll, said: "I'm having a bad week, aren't I? No, I wouldn't spray a bloke publicly like that."
Geyer said Brown, with whom he clashed verbally when they crossed paths at Brisbane's Treasury Casino the night before Origin II, was the coach he would least like to play under.
"I would find it hard to respect a bloke who slaps his own players, no matter what the circumstances," Geyer said. "And the way he and some of his big-name players carried on in Brisbane last week, I have to wonder about the discipline in the joint."
Brown wouldn't bite either. "I've got no response," he said. "If he [Geyer] is happy, I'm very happy for him."....
Class response from Ryles on the matter.

Classy response indeed from Ryles and I reckon Brown's was even better: "I've got no response," Brown said. "If he is happy, I'm very happy for him."....
Looks as though Geyer is making the play to assume the mantle held by Ray Price in the 90's and Rex Mossop in the 70s/80s that of the cantankerous, 'wouldn't happen in my day', old-school loyalty-and-values champion.
Only differences are:
1. Ray Price was a champion player, a dual international who won three premierships, played countless Tests and is still regarded by Parra fans as one of their favourite sons. He's someone who generally calls a spade a spade and for good reason.
2. Rex Mossop was one of the greats of the game, a dual international, countless Tests etc, a colourful and humourous character. Rex was quite an intelligent fellow as well who had a great talent for commentary and was a revolutionary broadcaster in his day.
3. Mark Geyer was sacked from two clubs and finished his career at the Umina Bunnies. These days he's a bit cranky after being busted playing touch-footy for Orara Valley. As a player his career realised only a small fraction of its potential because of an inherently bad attitude towards coaches and training.
After joining Balmain his game bordered on a cheap imitation copy of his days at Penrith. Regularly dominated in the forwards ever after, he was even hounded out of the Central Coast league by big local forwards (probably mostly bikies and cellarmen) intent on targeting him in order to expose the fraud Geyer was perpetrating on the public ie, that he was tough. On more than a few occasions he was given a merciless pisling in that comp.
Now MG hides behind his PC with the intent of masquerading as the new age messr Price or Mossop but neither does he have the runs on the board or the moral high ground to point the finger at anyone. No only does he pull punches to suit, any insults he throws are nearly always agenda-driven (as in this case) equivalent to breaking journalism's first commandment at least if you want to be considered impartial in the field.
My favourite Geyer story is actually a fabulous quote from Phil Gould when answering Geyer's promise to knock Gould's block off at NSW Origin training one day.
"Don't let fear stop you!" came the famous Gus reply.
And the fact is he was afraid then and for the same reason he wouldn't throw one at Wally Lewis in that rain-soaked Origin match in 1991 ... all Mark and no bite!
Mark Geyer is a coward folks.[/FONT]
