You know, the World Cup has been the leading story for the sport in all the news on major commercial networks the past few days. Whodathunk it.

Ticket sales seem to be picking up as well?

Love or hate the new eligibility rules, the one thing they have done is suddenly boost interest in some of the other nations taking part.

For Group B in particular, based upon Scotland's performance last year, Samoas a few years back and the types of players Tonga has recruited, there is so much uncertainty around who won't qualify.

For interest, discussion, ticket sales, TV viewers, etc, this is a massive and welcome boost for the tournament.

Personally, Tonga v NZ which I had moderate interest in, suddenly is a game I have to watch thanks to the news in the last few days.

I just saw a massive Billboard that runs across Southern Cross Drive Sydney advertising the World Cup tickets $20. Obviously targeting fans for the Australia v Lebanon at the SFS.. good idea they should continue with this ad up until the game itself.

Fifita has created a huge amount of coverage and potentially crafted himself as a pantomime villain for the tournament. All this without having an impact on Australia's chances of lifting the trophy.

The World Cup has got it's usual coverage whenever and wherever it's held and it's the same old same old reason. Eligibilty. Still any publicity is good publicity I suppose..

Pity the coverage doesn't include Englands chances or the French coming over for the first time since 2008 or........I dunno..The football..

England will get some coverage once they name their side. Unfortunately France missed their window to be the focus by delaying the naming of their side until the same day as the Kangaroos.

Anyway #RLWC2017 has been trending today in Australia and NZ on Twitter & FB which is positive, be keen to see how ticket sales go for NZ & Tongan games after today.

It's probably a good thing that naming the squads has been staggered. Looking forward to Fijian, England and Samoan squads.

Once England has been announced, they can go all out promoting the opener. Still p!ssed that the stadium for the opener is less than half the size of the opener for 2013 in yawnion mad Wales - and they still got over 40,000.

Most people here haven't heard of the English stars let alone the French ones. The NH nations simply aren't a big story down here until they take some big scalps.

Wonder if the NSW Government is starting to regret that it doesn't have a Tier 1 clash at the SFS or some decent games at Gosford or Newcastle..

The only thing that will change their mind is international RL being seen as a serious event.

I think guys like Sam Burgess, James Graham, Gareth Widdop and Josh Hodgson certainly life the profile of the English side but I don't know how much impact that has in Melbourne and Perth.

Yep, NZ v Tonga is going to be huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge, especially as it will be played in the Third Round of the Pool Matches - Could decide who tops the Group B!
Should be awesome - the Kiwis are in trouble if they don't aim up in this group.

Actually the thing that has been proven to "change the minds" of this government is public pressure and voter backlash. They shit themselves when they lost the Orange bi-election over the greyhound ban and forced amalgamations and back-flipped on both. They're weak and dodgy and enough embarrassment over their lack of support for the WC in NSW (and tack on their dithering over the stadium redevelopments) and they might wake up a bit. It would probably take the game's admin to lead the way though and that won't happen.

These players swapping nations has been the best publicity international league has seen in years. It dominated the news and is getting front page on the papers. It has finally put the RLWC in the limelight.
