Hey everybody, channel 9 just mentioned the World Cup in their news bulletin.

Danny Wielder was interviewing Matt Scott in the Cowboys change room.

Wielder said “ Matt Scott will not risk is injured knee at the upcoming World Cup.

Very brief mention but I nearly fell off my lounge chair..

I saw that as well and was very surprised.

Clearly something AFL does really well with corporates is contacting any person/company with ties to teams. The corporate people use it as a tax right off anyway and they schmooze.

It would make a lot of sense to invite cbs executives to watch USA compete, hell, even Facebook executives. Prime ministers, presidents etc. our game can bring together countries and if they want to help promote and increase our presence in there country well we should let them.

You can understand why channel 9 wouldn't promote it because it's obviously on 7mate. Could have at least gave it a few mentions during broadcast.. Merkins.
Agreed. Any other sport that has a world cup would have mentioned it, even if it was being broadcast on a rival chanel. There a few nations represented in the GF - you would think that it would have been obvious for at least an off-the-cuff remark e.g.

Many of the storm players will be pushing for Kangaroos jersies at the world cup later this year
or
A good performance could seal a Kiwi world cup spot for Te Maire Martin here
or
Vunivalu will be in action for Fiji in this year's world cup

but instead........ nothing

Nine are bastards. Carrying on through and after the grand final how it was the last game of the season and plugging the Ashes cricket as next sports highlight.

Mal Meninga is doing his best - but Nine is not helping intl footy. I'll never forget Gould during a 4 nations test , possibly final, complaining that he had to call the game and miss some cricket match "What are we doing here Rabs, we should be at the cricket"

The NRL should really be taking 9 to task over some of the comments like this. Surely something like 'speaking of the game in a positive light' or at least 'not discrediting the game' is in the broadcast contract somewhere.

Debatable. I don't think Channel 9 would bother talking about it even if they did have the rights. They've shown nothing but disdain for international footy and world cups in the past.

This criticism of Channel 9 can't be justified. I watched the GF and I was told several times that 9 was the "Home of Rugby League". Not the NRL but Rugby League.

Most of Australia, let alone channel 9, thinks Rugby League is the NRL.

Oh I don't mind journalistic integrity if they want to be negative or discredit an element of the game that they wish to draw attention too. But to completely ignore the upcomming World Cup and when calling a test match to complain the league season still being on, encroaching into cricket season, when their high paying dream job of rugby league commentary that 99% of the audience would gleefully have at the expense of missing a bit of a cricket match is just a touch on the nose for me. Is Gus promoting intl league by calling the game or trying to end it so he can watch cricket insteas to serve his self-interest of a longer off season holiday?

As a large part of the custodians of the game, tv rights broadcasting media ought to encourage and promote intl footy to maintain and support interest in internationals, both at home and abroad. Or just go the way of the AFL if its a better business model and flag all rep footy and intl interest and growth.

Any expectations on the RLWC twitter account?
Are games going to be shown on Twitter?

The Fixtures page of the RLWC is a bit awkward now ,especially when you select New Zealand's fixtures.

Just noticed the NSW tourism tv advert for the upcoming months. They mentioned the EVEREST Horse race at Randwick and Rugby union 7s in Sydney in February next year .No mention of a rugby league world cup!

Just another example of why Sydney didn't get any big games, it has a poor history of promoting rugby league events.

Sydney has no idea, it's the nrl or nothing, they don't even show up for the nrl these days.

That should not be the case! Rugby league has a track record of running away from different demographics. The development people tend to ignore the inner city areas thereby handing other codes a free kick to have their code gather participation and interest. Its dissapointing.

There is a World Cup Counter on the NRL pages on the Daily Telegraph, Courier Mail and Herald Sun sites, so there are starting to ramp up the advertising spend. Appears to be limited to all Rugby League articles and sections on the site, so a limited scope, but I guess there are more than enough NRL fans out there to fill each of the venues in those respective markets.

This is a point which is largely ignored.

Rugby League is *so* attached to the idea of its working class, Sydney-west image when the reality is that RL fans are a diverse and widespread group.
Look at the comments every Grand Final day that the entertainment should be some 70s pub rock band who are decades into irrelevancy, because "footy fans don't like rap".
Look at the way the NRL pushes hard for a Western Sydney showpiece stadium over the CBD.
Look at the way any outward looking progressive idea is shot down amid cries for investment into "the heartland".

ah...a Western Sydney stadium (Parramatta) would be more central to the majority of all sydneysiders and easier to get too...

no problems with this one
