Another mural. This time in Townsville...

Mural leaves lasting rugby league legacy

Date published: 29 September 2017

A new mural by a Townsville artist will be a lasting memento of the Rugby League World Cup 2017 games to be played in the city in October and November.

Townsville will host Fiji, USA, Italy and Wales on October 28 and November 5 at 1300SMILES Stadium.

Street Art Activation Working Group member and Rugby League World Cup Ambassador Cr Russ Cook said the mural by Kennie Deaner in Gregory St celebrated the game of rugby league.

“Kennie is a local artist and has previously been commissioned to paint a mural for council in Denham Lane,” Cr Cook said.

“We’re excited to have him on board with this new project which will celebrate the game and Townsville as a host city.

“We know Townsville people love their rugby league so we’re sure this new mural will be well received.”

The mural features a player mid stride and the flags of participating countries.

Townsville is one of 13 cities across Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea hosting the Rugby League World Cup 2017.

The RLWC just got an ad and a plug by channel 7 in the middle of and as part of their AFL GF pre game show.

I doubt channel 9 will mention it tomorrow.

They just also interviewed jim Wilson about it and he spoke well. Say what you like about Jim Wilson being an afl fan but he has been extremely positive towards the last 2 world cups.

This is one of the reasons I wish fox had got the rights alongside seven. They would have advertised the shit out of it. Now I can't help but think they'll mostly look over it just like 9.

Yep just saw that as a patient has it on TV. Crazy that channel 7 and the AFL will give RL more of a plug than channel 9.

Agree with the observations . A simulcast arrangement should have been done. However channel 7 seem to pump up their sports better than channel 9 and 10. I have a feeling that this world cup may be successful due to what is hopefully a more proactive and purposeful tv coverage. We can only hope.

Wondering if promotional ideas such as a "Welcome to visiting Rugby league World cup nations" race day or even race named for the tournament has been contemplated by the marketing people?
It will be interesting to see how the Daily Telegraph treats the world cup?

There will be live performances, player signings, skills and drills, chances to have selfies, face painting, waka races and more.

You can understand why channel 9 wouldn't promote it because it's obviously on 7mate. Could have at least gave it a few mentions during broadcast.. Merkins.

Agree. In the end mentioning the world cup benefits the code which ultimately creates further interest on the NRL. Their was a few mentions in the afternoon games but thats not good enough as the prime time audience didnt hear anything about the world cup. Shame on channel 9 !

Nine are bastards. Carrying on through and after the grand final how it was the last game of the season and plugging the Ashes cricket as next sports highlight.

Mal Meninga is doing his best - but Nine is not helping intl footy. I'll never forget Gould during a 4 nations test , possibly final, complaining that he had to call the game and miss some cricket match "What are we doing here Rabs, we should be at the cricket"

F..CK CHANNEL NINE!

Its a channel that doesnt go out of its way to help a code that has helped win many ratings years. Its dissapointing the NRL have not made an effort for some mentioning of the upcoming world cup during prime time as it would have done that tournament a big favour and ultimately the game would have benefitted. Very short sighted.
