But what do we do for a halfback then?

Blood Crossland if he’s our best prospect. We might experience some short term pain but let’s face it Pearce will never win the big games for us. At least Crossland might have the potential to, one day. If not Crossland, go to market. I’d be looking at Tom Dearden.

I would use Pearce and Watson’s money to beef up our forward pack even more, put Crossland behind a powerful and intimidating forward pack. I think Fitz hits the line like a wet tissue so get a firebrand backrower who gives a sh*t and let him and Barnett go to town on our opposition. We’ll also need a like for like swap for Watson, someone who can turn a game but also remain on the field most of the season.

Finally a couple of depth props will be necessary behind Klem, Saf x 2, Barnett and Saulo.

It’s a shame because Pearce had a ripper 2018 and he showed he has the goods for the most part in 2019.

Ponga has also struggled more this year.

It’s funny that O’Brien has brought such a rise in standard from our pack and outside backs...but Pearce and Ponga seemed to thrive under Brown more.

I’m not trying to imply that one is a better coach than the other or that those two won’t come on again. But we just haven’t been able to have it all click at once.

I reckon Randall will get a run at 9 next week with Mann dropping into 9 when Randall gets a break.
Hoy would be likely to get the bench spot but I don't think he offers much off the bench.

I already feel like giving next week a miss after this one. One of those times where I cannot even imagine a scenario where we win.

Next week will be frustrating because they will put in the effort but we'll lose because their confidence will be shot after this game.

Own worst enemy.

The fortunate thing for Newcastle this season is that the teams outside the 8 range anywhere from poor to the Broncos. They should (injuries permitting) still make the finals, but this is AOB's year zero and it should be apparent by now that Pearce isn't the guy to shoulder the clubs' aspirations. I'd be interested to see a parallel universe where Pearce was a hooker instead of playing at halfback all his career. He's quick on his feet, can break through the opposition forwards and then flick the ball left or right for a chasing team-mate to finish the job and score under the posts. But he's never been fully suited to the ad-lib pressure of playing halfback. It's always like he's thought of what kick/ play he's going to execute 2 or 3 plays out, and often the situation that presents itself calls for something different.

Might be off the mark here but from my point of view, it seems Ponga has purposefully taken a step back and let his senior Pearce take control of the attack. Pearce and Ponga have a great relationship and perhaps Ponga wants Pearce to regain some confidence or form so let's him direct the attack first and then chime in.

Ponga needs to become the alpha male and demand the ball every time. Does this make sense?

Pearce doesn’t force him to get tackled on the 4th and refuse to pass the Ball.

Yes yes and more yes

  • Pearce - is NEVER going to win us a Premiership - he needs assistance from someone more than just a running 5/8. He isnt even a Captain as far as I'm concerned. Given Guerra is a part timer these days Barny would be my Captain every day of the week and twice on Sundays.
  • Crossland - in an effort to go for the future ( this season is gone ) he needs to be introduced to the NRL ASAP.
  • Fitz - agree with you, he would NOT be in my team next season. Replace him with someone who has a pair of balls.
  • Watson - Sometimes life is cruel. Constant injuries with this guy would prevent me from re-signing him. We have a ready made replacement in Tex Hoy.
  • With Watson coin I'd go in the market for a halves prospect, I'd be looking straight at the Roosters stocks. They have 3 of the best young prospects and surely cant keep all of them or as you say Dearden.

Time to move Piss to 9 and play a young half while you’re hookers are all out injured. Take the kicking duties away from him.

Can I add Sione to this list?
