I’ve avoided commenting but since you asked…

Barnett has a brain snap in him. This was definitely the worst of them and it was bad, although to be honest I don’t think it was as bad as some have made out. I know that’s not a popular thing to say right now. He’ll deservedly get a stretch.

I am not going to be in the pitchfork brigade on Barnett. He is not a fake tough guy, he is actually tough, and we have benefitted from it in the past. His mongrel has been a big part of some of our pack’s better performances over the years. Two weeks ago when the Roosters brought JWH and SST off the bench, Barnett rolled them.

I think Barnett has done enough for this club being a mongrel that we (Knights only) shouldn’t totally hang him out to dry now.

Big big Barnett fan. It was the worst because he is one our leaders and has been through some real crappy years with us. It finally looks like we are a competitive side and he has that sort of brain explosion.

If he had gotten into a scuffle and punched the other bloke, that's different... Very disappointed in him personally.

exactly, theres a difference between toughness and grubbiness. Absolutely nothing tough at all about hitting a bloke off the ball when hes not looking. If he had come in somewhat recklessly on a ball carrier similar to Latrell on Manu i could accept that because its easy to get it wrong in those circumstances but this was just idiotic and showed absolutely zero regard for his team

Getting into a scuffle and throwing a punch is obviously not good from a team perspective, but it’s not grubby at all.

What he did today was grubby. It was gutless. No one is proud of him for it.

But for me..it wasn’t a king hit, it wasn’t a flying elbow, it wasn’t an eye gouge.

Barnett had a rush of blood and raised his forearm to clip Smith when he got in his path making a cover tackle. He didn’t change path to clock him, he had eyes for the play, and it wasn’t done with serious force. Smith held his feet until he realised he should go down for the penalty.

I’m not saying there was milking or that Barnett was in the right or anything like that. It was definitely big suspension worthy. But it doesn’t rate as a horrific incident to me in the context of what we’ve seen over the years. Moreso a dumb one.

From some still images I've seen, although he doesn't necessarily deviate his path, he sure extends the arm out to ensure the elbow collects him. And I saw it live on the telly also.

Namely this pic: https://www.foxsports.com.au/nrl/nr...s/news-story/17b82f702e6bdd63ea9dcd82e0809301

You can see him leaning over as he goes by to get him.

Just totally uncalled for on a guy who didn't even have the ball, was a decoy, stopped at the line and wasn't impeding Mitch, wasn't even looking. Horrible act really.

I'm not going to hang him though, he will serve time and have to earn his way back in to the squad again.

I’ve watched it a few times.

Really dumb, but It wasn’t that bad.

I’m prepared to show mercy-3 weeks.

Latrell shouldn’t be playing rugby league.

Watched the game. Really gutted that Barnett basically cost us any chance we had of winning the game. We were definitely matching it with Penrith up until that point and could have gone on with it given how badly Penrith were playing.

I’m not sure what’s he was thinking but that’s probably going to go down as the dumbest play of 2022. Completely selfish on all levels.

That being said, really proud of the team for how they stood up especially in the second half. Despite the result being out of reach from the stage when the sendoff occurred. I think this will actually galvanise us moving forward for next week.

Also gotta give Hoy some credit. He played well today. Still some positioning and defensive errors but he at least created some points for.

Of course it was deliberate.

Yes, thats obvious. You said he didn't change path to clock him.

My point was he may not have changed path, but he sure went out of his way to ensure he got him, by extending the elbow way out almost leaning to get there. I don't know why changing path is a sign of lesser culpability. Smith didn't get in his path and Mitch could have ran by without contact.

It sounds like your point is that he made sure to elbow him when he didn’t have to, which I agree with.

Changing path would come into culpability at sentencing, it shows pre-meditation and degree of intent. See Danny Williams incident for example, which I am saying is worse.

Barnett was always participating in the play and at pace. Bloke came in his path, Barnett could have avoided him and he didn’t, but it was a clip on the way through. Not him dropping everything else to go after the guy. Not serious force.

I was just talking about redeeming features compared to past incidents when people say this is the worst thing they’ve seen on a footy field. I was never saying Barnett wasn’t guilty.

Not just that . He raises his forearm . He doesn’t cock his elbow . Anyone who has watched any sort of martial arts would know that wasn’t someone striking with their elbow

After seeing it again on the footy show I can see what I think happened.
I think Barnett thought there was going to be a collision and put his arm up to keep Smith back a bit by hitting his chest, Smith slowed at the last second, Barnett totally stuffed the timing and got him in the throat.
Really don’t think there was any intent.
It looks bad and it was still a dumb thing to do but I’ll be a bit disappointed if he gets more than 4 weeks.

I've watched it a bunch more times, different angles, slow mo etc.

Doesn't cock the elbow, just raised forearm. In fact I think he was just trying to fend him off as he came through from impacting him, but clearly raised it to face level and copped him flush.

Still going to get 6-10 weeks for it.

We haven't heard from Mitch yet.

this

There's some major hyperbole over Barny, For mine he should have been on report and nothing more. I'm majorly pissed I was robbed of the footy game I'd been waiting for.

These are my honest thoughts too..

It's as if he's raised the arm to push him away as he could see in the corner of his eye that they were about to collide.

I mean that sounds very friendly, maybe there was a part of Barnett that did want to get a nice enough shot in but it went pretty horribly wrong.

I'm expecting 6-8 weeks I think. Like others have pointed out, he hasn't identified a target and honed in with a shot. It was a passing by glance that was more stupid than anything (by raising the forearm).

Or swinging an arm into someone's head like NAS did last night - you only get a $1000 fine for that!
That was ridiculous. Imagine that, not even a penalty and you could easily argue that was far worse. Swinging arm with intent to the back of the head.

yep defo an OTT reaction to Barny. Fair enough it looked bad, but I've seen a hell of a lot worse on a footy field. Leg twists and cannonballs, scorpions, neck crushers, eye gouges are all a hell of a lot worse than Barny and his mistimed fend/strike IMO.
