I think if Hoffman was to land here today, you'd have him in the team with Sione on the bench and one of Yates or Stone to miss out. I can't imagine Hoffman will be demanding epic coin at this stage in his career. Not unheard of, but he was never really top-tier to begin with. Quality player, I don't think I'd say no given where we are. He'd be near the bottom of the list of blokes I'd want, though... and not even on the list I had at the beginning of the year of guys we should target.

I agree ,asking these type of players its looking grim.we could get a early realise for him effective immediately and see how he pans out. If all goes well with he performances then what the hell give him another year!He certainly could teach the young blokes a thing or two.the bloke would not really be in a position to be asking for much.

Bird would be fantastic. But without a real good forward added to the lineup, and a decent one.

We will struggle to lay the platform they need to work from.

Hoffman at least brings some skills & intelligence if he were to come, never seems to have a bad game & knows what lines to run. Who knows it might rub off on some of the others.

Hodkinson was playing behind the biggest pack in the history of rugby league when he was at the Dogs and his attacking stats were deplorable. That said it all imo.

We were desperate for a signing at the time (when aren't we) and the perfect storm (Hagan et al ) were writing the cheques so it was a fait accompli. I do understand the theory that he would be good foil for Mullo and that he generally seemed like a good defender and had a decent kicking game at the Dogs so tick, tick there in recruitment strategy.

However, as we have now seen, for what ever reasons (possibly the same reasons some excuse most of Mullo's poor career) he is playing behind a mediocre pack and he doesn't seem to have the same strengths as he did when at Canterbury. That said, I believe that even behind a great pack he wouldn't be setting the world on fire. He just isn't a create half. At all.

I laugh and then shake my head at the $$$$ being thrown around for some players. I mean nearly a million for Aaron Woods. Dugan wants nearly a million. Jack Bird a million. These blokes are rep players - yes - but part of a NSW culture that has won jack shit for a decade. I find it hard to justify those sort of figures no matter what the salary cap. Kudos to Bird, he is a Premiership winning player now.

I love Jack Bird as a player. What he did in the GF after copping that elbow injury was inspiring. He's tough. He's a winner. But I have reservations about paying him nearly a million a season to come here and play behind our pack most probably as the number 6 in a position he really hasn't played much of in the top grade. If it happens I pray he's as good as I hope he is. That's a lot of dosh to be tied up if it turns to shit. It's absolute top tier player money isn't it? As for Woods, I could never entertain paying him close to a million. Ever.

I don't know what the answer is. I always thought we would have a good enough junior system in the area to find some gems especially in the spine positions but alas we've had pretty much sweet FA after the Joey/Bedsy era.

I've been fully supportive of Brown and his staff since day one. I believe they were extremely quick to identify the players that had to be shown the door. I have not disagreed with any of their decisions. With that job done, I like some of the short term signings they have made and understand why they have made them. The young locals have had their careers fast tracked and I have my fingers crossed they will repay the coaching staff ten fold in the longer term. We need them to come good in a very big way.

A money ball type of roster is probably our go with 2 or 3 rep quality players at best. Maybe Ponga will tick that box in years to come but who will the other 2 (hopefully more) rep quality players be????

Well said, you are realistic and optimistic at the same time.it seems to be the price for rep players now that cherry evans and hunt and co.1 million is going to be the norm real soon in a year or two.

I could entertain the idea of paying the elite spine rep players top dollars (and there are not many of them) but not Woods and Dugan and co. Even Dugan's current club is offering him a pay cut.

Dugan is dreaming, he is good but like billy moore said on nrl 360 he is a centre not a fullback.he reminds of marshall thinks he better then what he really is!some players are a little ahead of themselves. But dugan not worth what he wants!

Can we just pick out the 3-4 best 20yo halves (and front rowers) and throw money at them while we have it but cant spend it? One might turn out good... :|

I am ok with Levi this year. Focus on halves and upside front rowers.

Newcastles problem is not the talent pool but the talent it has let go. Always has been since early y2k.

Part of this is the development pathways. Those Panther kids arent excelling early in NRL when they have been playing junior rep footy with our guys for nothing.

Brown has a plan. Give it a chance.

Weve tried that, didnt turn out too well

My preference is to look at the clubs with top level players in the positions we need, then look at their reserve grade team. More often than not there is a very good footballer stuck behind a Cam Smith or a JT etc

Could also look at the reserve grade sides at the top too.

I'd be pretty disappointed if Brown and Mooney had not yet exhausted all options at the clubs in that situation Mac. It should be a no brainer.

There are plenty of reserve graders running around who would improve our team - guys like Kurt Mann, Kato Ottio etc would walk into our team - but halves and front towers are still nigh on impossible to find.

Then there is trying to get them out of their current teams, and/or trying to get them out of QLD (where it seems anyone with any talent is contracted to the Broncos).

Union? I honestly don't know where we are going to get what we need.

Looks like Tupou will be jn the 1st grade squad for tomorrows game. Saw a report on Twitter but no more detail.

Anyone know who he comes into the 17 for?

I don't think it's a massive stretch to assume it will be Yates or Stone that makes way.
