Good post.
If FB was the position that needed strengthening (seemed to be the opinion of the coaching staff when they chased Hayne) then they should have stuck to their guns and done so.
But typical of our lot they took a different option trying to cover a raft of situations and came up well short on the original task at hand.
I am pro Dufty to the point of wanting to see him drastically improve his shortcomings to retain his spot otherwise arriva derci.
People keep talking about Tedesco well despite all his apparent brilliance now he sure as hell had some real deficiencies in his 1st couple of years and that should not be overlooked or forgotten when analysing Dufty's progression.

Dont disagree OT, but I wouldn't have wanted us to persevere with Tedesco in those first few years. I firmly believe that fullback is one of those positions where you need a player who has the skills and is not trying to develop them in first grade.

I am not against Dufty, I just dont think we should be experimenting with him in first grade. Of all the things the team needed I believe it was and still is that top flight fullback. A player who can get the roll started from kicks, solid under the kick, can read where to be in defence and is willing to put their body on the line, is able to physically break a tackle, backs up, can play before the line and through the line etc.

I know I am asking a lot and that there are very few players who fit the bill but in my opinion we need to buy the best we can for fullback.

Thats the problem he isnt a Tedesco or Slater but that is exactly what we need.

And he is still learning basics after one and a half seasons in first grade and the mistakes he has made are the same ones over and over.

And why do we have to ignore the fact our fullback has shortcomings? I tend to think that some posters on the forum have actually been too fast to talk him up as if he is a future immortal. Choosing between Widdop or Dufty at fullback should never have been the situation we are in, we should have signed a genuine complete fullback before the season started.

And 14 other sides ! Dufty on a third of his salary and still has potential to improve. Can't have superstars in every position.

Cant have superstars in every position is correct. That's why we have a salary cap.

Having " specialist " players in KEY positions is another matter. I don't know what Dufty is on, but 1/3 sounds about right of Tedesco. Matt has yet to nail his spot.

He has work to do.
At the minute, its rocks and diamonds. Can score a try of the year contender and then concede a few tries through his obvious weaknesses.

I hope he succeeds, but for me the jury is still out.

I am a fan of Dufty and would like to see him succeed, but there are obviously flaws in his game. One think I was just thinking about was, I am having trouble remembering him hitting a hole, like Field did on the weekend. I just watched his highlights reel on Youtube, which was made 10 months ago and there wasn't one highlight of him hitting a hole, like Field did on the weekend. I will say that his highlights reel was super impressive though. He was doing some great things last year.

Field would probably have a better passing game than Dufty at fullback and he can hit a hole better than Dufty from fullback too, but Dufty is dynamite in broken play.

As some were suggesting last night. Maybe we should try Field at left centre? It is only a hypothetical suggestion, because the chances of Mary doing something like that are extremely slim.

Dufty’s been copping a lot of criticism this year and to be fair some of it has been warranted. People were saying he needs to be stronger under the high ball, improve his one on one defence and his kick returns. I think he’s been gradually doing that. Those aspects of his game were ok in the last two games (in particular). He still has a way to go and he does need to do it consistently but you can’t ask much more from the young kid than to keep working on his game and to keep improving. He is so dangerous in broken play and as the defence tires. He’s a keeper I reckon.

I'd like to see him model some of his game on Tedesco. Tedesco is always loitering around the ruck looking to exploit lazy defenders even running from dummy half as well. With his speed Dufty could be more dangerous doing this, especially when McInnes runs.Maybe the problem is our so called game plan where we use Dufty on sweeping plays too often & he's just accustomed to playing this way.
PS.
I don't think Field at centre is an option.

We just don't make enough breaks for players to sniff around the ruck like Tedesco and Slater who live up in the line just waiting.
Our game plan doesn't include it, so it is more ad hoc and therefore hard to predict when to be up in the line.

Exactly OT.
It's just another example of not formulating a game plan which suits the team.
The try by Field the other day is a perfect example of having a quick player hovering around.I'm sure it was just a case of Field having the nous to do this as I don't think it would have been trained for.

It could also be that 6 and 7 are telling Dufty to set up for the next play which takes him out of the current play.

I don't have an issue with Dufty's defence, as long as he's having a go. If he gets fended off by a larger player then so be it, it happens to alot of fullbacks.

Dufty has been better under the high ball recently and hasn't backed away from kick returns like Quinlan used to do.

Agree
He is putting in at training but needs to get rid of few Demons in his head and he will be much better

No need for me to comment, you have said it precisely as l would of, yes, he's a keeper.
It would be good if our wingers and centres supported him both in attack and defence.
They need to learn to shield him when the situations arise ........... like we did with Soward.

As 'j0nesy' says,in attack, he can create a try scoring situation out of nowhere, so in defence, we need to protect him when someone puts up a bomb.

Problem is, our backline is as green as the prawns l just purchased!
Ahoy me Hearties, garlic prawns on the BBQ tonight!

Dufty is great in moments but rarely dominates a game or comes up with a MOM performance. Seems to fade in and out of matches but can't say he is alone on that front...

Pretty much sums up the last few games. For 40 minutes we've been in control and for the second 40, we've been on the back foot where every mistake made and penalty concided resulted in either points scored against us, repeat sets of six or seven tackle sets.

For what ever reason the Dragons have not been able to get any momentum in the second half recently apart from when Dufty got us back into the game against the Roosters...
