He was awesome yesterday, 2 tries and 2 great try assists with sublime passing to boot. He is very much a confidence player but for me is the best option right now for Fullback.
Ramsey may be the future but he is a couple years away and needs to bulk up as well. Seems to be doing Ok out on the wing.

I don't care what anyone else says. We cannot lose Dufty. He has got to be resigned for another 3 years.

Super impressive yesterday.

Was real happy for him tbh.

Our backline I had as bottom 4 on paper pre season. With Dufty, Rava, Bird , Lomax ( esp in defence ), i was way off.

I don't expect Dufty to throw precision passes week in week out, but if he keeps his involvement high, Im sure a contract will be made available.

Well done Matthew Dufty yesterday was IMO probably your most accomplished and best all-round display since coming into 1st grade.

You hung around the ruck, got into dummy half, defended much much better and positional play was also a great improvement.

I am glad that you displayed your kicking game again as there is a doubter in our midst as to whether it existed or if it did how effective it is.

Even though I am critical of you at times I never doubted that was part of your armoury and I look forward to seeing it again at an appropriate point in a match.

To me the key to his performance yesterday was that he didn't overplay his hand which kept the opposition guessing which created additional opportunities for others and those things that he did do especially in attack were executed with precision.

That's 2 fine performances in a row and I look forward to next week and seeing even more progress as you are clearly enjoying your footy and the game plan presented to you by the coach.

Matt Dufty says he's made a conscious effort to get the low-percentage plays out of his game in a bid to become a far more consistent fullback.

Dufty was the star of St George Illawarra's 26-10 win over Parramatta on Sunday night, putting the Dragons inside the top four with their fourth straight win.

The Dragons No.1 remains off contract at the club and wants to re-sign, with talks between his management and the Dragons slowly progressing.

But performances like Sunday night will only help.

The 25-year-old scored twice and set up the Dragons' other two tries in the big win, joking afterwards he could be dropped for playing laterally under Anthony Griffin's direct game style.

The majority of Griffin's messages are, however, sinking in.

Dufty leads the Dragons for linebreaks, tries and tackle busts, but while still making less errors and missing 75 per cent fewer tackles on previous years.

"I'm not a black-and-white kind kind of player. I play in the grey," Dufty said.

"But I'm not doing the the low-percentage plays I'd say, I don't do that as much (compared to previous years).

"It's not about those big plays for me this year. It's about doing those little things right.

"Being in position to save tries, stuff like that. I'd rather do that than score 20 tries this year."

Dufty has long maintained he can be among the NRL's best fullbacks if he finds his consistency, having made no secret of the fact he is motivated by watching other No.1s star.

The step up in his ball-playing skills was notable last year, as he set up 15 tries in 18 games.

But this season he has made a deliberate effort to be more around the ruck under Griffin, with a far quicker contest going back to suiting his running game.

Sunday night was the first time he found a pure mix of the two in one of the best games of his career.

"I knew it was a big game (against Parramatta) and every other fullback has been carving up in the comp. So I thought I better step it up," Dufty said.

"I've been around the ruck a lot more this year hanging around for those offloads or quick play-the-balls.

"I'm always hanging around begging for that little inside ball, that half break.

"That's just the next evolution of my game, trying to mix last year's ball-playing with this year's around the ruck.

"I haven't really got the opportunities to to ball play that much this year. But (on Sunday) I was lucky enough to get in the right spot, and they seek that effect."

Flipping mindset helps Dufty hit top form in pursuit of new contract

Dragons fullback Matt Dufty is prepared to be patient and focus on football while contract negotiations are ongoing.

The 25-year-old's flying start to the season continued with a scintillating two-try performance in Sunday's 26-12 win over the Eels.

Despite the team now sitting fourth after four consecutive victories, coach Anthony Griffin won't rush into re-signing players and said he "hadn't thought about" whether the early form of Dufty and others like five-eighth Corey Norman warranted extensions.

"Good things come in time and if I'm worried about [a contract] then it's affecting me on the field," Dufty said.

"If I flip my mindset and just worry about how I'm playing ... then those contract things will come. I talk to a manager every day and it's building slowly. No updates ... We're going back and forth a bit."

As well as scoring a double - one being a contentious penalty try - Dufty set up two four-pointers with lovely passes to sink Parramatta.

It's just as well that Dufty's execution was precise - he joked he "probably would have heard Hook [Griffin] from the box" had something gone wrong after instinctively deviating from the coach's plan.

"I was hoping Hook wasn't gonna drop me this week because he said [get rid of the] long balls and play through the middle," he quipped.

Match Highlights: Eels v Dragons

"It's been giving us success this year, playing through the middle and playing those short passes, but I'm not a black-and-white kind of player. I play in the grey. I have to apologise to him during the week."

The custodian "did a lot of video, probably the most I've ever done" before the Eels clash and knew if he got Mitch Moses interested on their left edge that the halfback's outside men would follow in-field.

Dufty believes the next step in his game is finding the right balance between exploiting gaps in the middle and ball-playing. The Dragons will look to make it five straight wins when they host the Warriors at Kogarah on Sunday.

"I'm not doing the low-percentage plays, I'd say. I don't do that as much," said Dufty, who assisted 12 tries last year.

"But the way the game is going, there's a lot of space around the ruck. It's so fast out there, it's actually kind of ridiculous even for me.

"I don't know how the big boys do it, it's a credit to them that they play there for 80 minutes because it's a tough gig.

"I just wait for opportunities to present themselves. When Normy's playing around the ruck or Cluney [Adam Clune] is there, I'm always hanging around begging for that little inside ball, that half-break.
"I'm happy with how my game is building. It's not about those big plays for me this year; it's about doing those little things - getting the numbers right [in defence], being in position to save tries.

"Stuff like that. I'd rather do that than score 20 tries this year.

[The Parramatta match] was probably the most nervous I've been. I knew it was a big game and every other fullback has been carving up in the comp, so I thought I better step it up. I was just in the right spot and the boys gave me the ball in the right opportunities."

On NRL360 Hook said he is working with Dufty on being more vocal, getting to know different attacking structures of opposition teams and organising our defensive line to suit. If that is done well the chasers from the opposition kick defensive line may be not set correctly and this is when Dufty will be at his most dangerous. It was a good insight to how he thinks he can get the best out of Dufty and it seems to be working.

Wow, this is exactly what we want to hear.

Love he is focusing on the little things but I would still prefer he score 20 tries, that's a lot. But hopefully he can score 20 tries and improve his positioning and errors

In many discussions re Dufty there are those that point out the weaknesses they perceive in his game whilst others constantly refer to the "highlights real" quoting tries and try assists bla bla bla as the counter to any criticisms regardless of how constructive it may be.

Interesting that Hook is well aware of what he is capable of in attack but has him focussing on improving in a variety of areas and obviously believes if he gets that right MD will be a much better footballer for it.

Great to have a coach that is not so easily distracted from the big picture by fancy highlight footage and knows that all round skill levels are far more important in the long term.

I hope MD keeps on top of his homework assignments and doesn't take any shortcuts because he is showing benefits from paying attention to detail.

You get the impression Hook isn’t sold on Dufty. Ramsey was extended weeks yet there’s no rush to even talk to Dufty.

Red-hot Dragons star ‘touch and go’ on new deal; path cleared for Fifita’s NRL exit: Transfer Whispers

Mathew Dufty has revealed there has been little movement on a new Dragons deal.
Matty Dufty has been in red-hot form this season, but that doesn’t mean the Dragons are in any rush to table a new deal.

The fullback entered the 2021 as one of a number of players with a new contract for 2022 and knowing he would need to impress new coach Anthony Griffin.

The 25-year-old has responded with some scintillating performances including a try and two try assists in the Dragons’ ambush of the high-flying Eels at BankWest Stadium in round five.

Dufty, however, revealed little progress had been made on a new Dragons deal.

“It’s a touch and go thing at the moment,” Dufty said on Triple M’s Rush Hour.

“It’s pretty slow. But it’s definitely on my mind. It’s a big season for myself and for my future.

“It’s something I’m trying to keep in the background and not let it dictate my form.”

Griffin, meanwhile, says Dufty still has more improvement to do.

“He’s good, he’s been improving (but) he needs to,” Griffin said after the win over Parramatta.

“He’s a really good kid and he’s learning the fine arts of playing fullback in tight football games, like he did tonight.

“He needs to keep improving to unlock his potential.

“That’s the challenge with a lot of us. He’s always been great with the ball, that’s never been a question, it’s about mastering his craft as a fullback at this level.
