I have complete faith in Matt Elliot and my faith has not changed since the day the club announced his signing.

While this is his last chance and he better than anyone is aware of that I have a sneaky feeling we are capable of sneaking into the eight. Just.

That I suspect will be enough to justify his retention for at least another season to see what he can do with the current crop of juniors he has at his disposal.

ME not unlike Brian Smith had to rid the club of our past former stars who sadly were badly underachieving and he has certainly achieved that if nothing else.

In the lead up to season 2009 the least all panther supporters can do if support him to the hilt. If he fails and we do not make the eight then clearly he will be out of a job.

I dont think we will get the spoon this year.
We havent had too many major losses to our side.
If we can play a little better this year and Elliott uses his brain instead of picking players out of the hat we may stand a chance up against the big guys.

I have to say though i think Brisbane will win it this year.

Penrith will probably get just outside the top 8 again.

Hopefully.

I think if Pritchard can have a solud and consistant year we will do very well.

we will also need to see some leadership shown from some of our senior players.

I think Gordon will earn himself a spot in the Blues side and Jennings will play for Australia if they can have a good year.

If Pritchard's form is anything like your spelling we don't have much to look forward too.

English lesson number one, the correct spelling is solid, not solud.

In between games tommorrow bring your school books and I will impart on you some of my literary skills.

I am predicting an announcement will be made around May in relation to Elliott's future. If we are flying high, ME will more than likely get a one year extension. If we are going like a busted ass (more likely), then the club will announce Georgallis as the coach for 2010.

Elliott hopes for third time lucky

Greg Pritchard, February 21 2009

Matthew Elliott says he is thinking only of his players as he prepares for a season that represents the last throw of the dice for him as Penrith coach.

The Panthers failed in the first two years of Elliott's three-year contract, picking up the wooden spoon in 2007 and finishing 12th last season, after which he had to front the club's board of directors to try to convince them to let him see out his deal. Criticism of his coaching methods by some players to the club's management, on top of the poor results, had put Elliott under enormous pressure. He survived, but any future he may have as Penrith coach beyond this year will be determined by the team's results this season, and he knows that.

"All I care about is the players now," he said yesterday. "I just want to see them do well. I want to stay here beyond this year, but all I can do about that is prepare the players to perform to the best of their ability. The rest, I'm not really worried about. Maybe I'm confident about us doing well this season, or I just realise there's little I can do about it [the future] except do as good a job as I can with the players."

After two understrength Penrith sides were well beaten on the same night by Parramatta and South Sydney respectively in trial games last weekend, the Panthers will field a line-up much closer to full strength in a trial against the Eels at CUA Stadium tonight. The Panthers will be missing fullback Lachlan Coote and forwards Petero Civoniceva and Frank Pritchard, while the Eels will be missing forwards Nathan Cayless and Junior Paulo.

It remains to be seen how long the Penrith management waits before deciding whether to go with Elliott again next year or seek another coach, but results in the first six to eight weeks of the competition will be critical. "I've had some discussions with the club," Elliott said. "There are a number of people with decisions to make, and I'm one of them. We'll eventually get to a point where it is time to make those decisions."

So what are the chances of the Panthers improving and challenging for a place in the finals? Elliott says he feels only good vibrations.

"I knew there was going to be a transitional period after I took over," he said. "I'm disappointed it has taken as long as it has, but there are other models - like Hawthorn and Geelong in the AFL - that suggest it takes a couple of years before you can turn it around. Even when I was at Canberra it took a couple of years to establish the work ethic and culture that was needed.

"But I know we've got that work ethic and culture at Penrith now. I know the players in our squad understand and believe in what we are doing, and want to get it done properly."

The airing of grievances during that stormy period at the end of last season helped, but Elliott also points to the rise of promising young players at the club, such as fullback Coote and five-eighth Wade Graham, as being a freshener for everyone. "The young players feel more confident about putting their personalities out there in front of the group now," Elliott said. "And that just makes the group tighter."

The Matt Elliot offensive game plan continues to include the dummy half (Aiton & Ioseaf) take one or two sideways steps and then they turn the ball back on the inside to one the front rowers who hit's it up through the ruck. It is very predicable and hasn't worked for us in the last two season and I saw nothing tonight to suggest it will work for us this season. Parramatta on the other hand get the ball out of the ruck into the hands of Brett Finch who directs everything from there. Much more effective in getting over the advantage line.

We have 3 of the best hookers in the game in Aiton, Masada and Romelo, but they seem to balk when they run from dummy half, stop and throw silly passes.

For goodness sake Elliott, encourage them to run from dummy half and go themselves. Every other team in the competition does it. We must either have very very poor ruck manifpulation skills and slow play the balls, or Elliott is restricting our dummy half running.

I choose to be bald. I choose to be a dud in the bedroom. I also choose to be a loser on the punt.
