Let's hear from the man himself:

Matt Elliott: life in the pressure cooker
10 Mar 09 @ 09:20am by Lawrence Machado

IF he feels any pressure, Panthers coach Matt Elliott is not showing it.

With two forgettable seasons behind them, he knows the Panthers have to lift themselves off the canvas and regain their winning edge.

He told the Press he couldn’t be happier with the trial games as he finalises his combinations for the opening round against Cronulla Sharks on Saturday, March 14 at Toyota Stadium.

His vast experience in rugby league and all its pressures seems to have provided the Panthers coach with a tough exterior to handle his critics.

Last season when Penrith’s grand final ambitions went spiralling down after a late meltdown, Elliott’s job looked in jeopardy.

He even famously pulled his own tie like a mock hanging during a press conference.

Despite sections of the media predicting his days at Panthers were numbered, he survived.

Now he says the only pressure he experiences comes from the media’s endless predictions of gloom and doom.

His first season in 2007 saw the Panthers finish with the wooden spoon. 2008 was slightly better, the club ending 12th after a positive start but an injury toll didn’t help the cause.

Still, Elliott does not show the pressure as he looks for an improved showing from his young and enthusiastic squad.

“I am looking forward to the first match against Cronulla as the trials have been fantastic,” the former Dragons player said.

Penrith’s strong youth base provides the club with powerful motivation with the senior players saying they have been energised by their enthusiasm.

Only Greg Waddell is still not fit to take the field after his knee reconstruction.
His coach said the youngster, regarded as a highly promising player, should be ready in a couple of weeks, adding strength to his squad.

Skipper Petero Civoniceva agrees the Panthers are ready for their season.

“There were good signs against the North Queensland Cowboys that we are very strong defensively and have a great attack,” the Australian prop said. “The boys are happy and everyone is looking forward to the season.”

Lewis at 5/8..again?

He's worked on his kicking game in the off season! The balance of the side cannot accomodate both Nathan Smith and Luke Lewis in the back row and clearly Smith deserves to be in the starting lineup on form over the past two seasons despite not being a favourite amongst the fans.

Tonight we will see two of the games worst coaches face off,
Elliott and Stewart.

Elliott:
His 3rd year here at Penrith and still unable to show any spark.
Hasnt produced anything over the 2 full years he has coached here and the team he has here at Penrith he should have atleast coached us to the top 8.

Stewart:
lucky because he has a great side in the Sharks but still has not yet proved he is a good coach.
he couldnt even coach a full class Aussie side to teh World cup over a poor NZ side.

2 sad coaches here.
Whoever wins this match though will determine who is the better coach.
GO PENRITH!

Another loss for Elliott.

I must give it to the boys though, they tried their hardest but unfortunately have a deluded parasite who suffers from mental geniusation as a coach we are going no where this season.

No kickers in our side kills us game in. Game out,

:uke Lewis is one of the best defenders in the game and a great runner of the ball in attack, but he should never EVER EVER be allowed to kick a ball in general play.

Iosefa did nothing tonight. Aiton stamped his mark on the #9 jumper.

I think it is time to promote Penese into the top level and give Waterhouse a spell at Windsor.

Romelo had a sh1t game in the 20's but I think he has more to offer in the 7 and 6 than what we presented tonight.

Sammut was abit selfish i think.

Everytime he has the ball he has to be the star, he either dummies and gets smashed, kicks the ball on the 3rd tackle 20 metres out or throws a bad pass out to Tighe 20 metres out from the line.

Panthers deserved to get a pizzling from the footy media. Look at the players we've lost over the past couple of seasons

Eg. Exit stage left: Wesser, T Puletua, Rooney, Gower, Campbell, Clinton Ross, Priddis

If that hasn't freed up well over a million dollars of our cap then I'm not here. Fair enough we've had to upgrade Jennings and purchased Petero, but fair dinkum, our management couldn't run a choako vine over a chicken wire fence.

Seems Gus Gould thought we really suck.

Perhaps he can return to the Glory days and coach us again.

Come on Gus.

Help us out.

If it gets him off the TV I'm all for it. After all we seem to lose no matter who coaches us.

I always thought Sammut would make a better 5/8 than half. Graham would lead the team around far better at first receiver.
Lewis I thought was ineffectual even when he decided to run it. Perhaps he wasn't making great decisions on when to run it either.

Elliott made poor selections and if he told the players to kick early he's an idiot and it is his fault. Outside that, the rain didn't help.

I'm going to stop going to Cronulla, always get rained on, full of idiots, we always lose.

Some nice MILFS to look at though. Average dress size in the shire = 10 as opposed to average t-shirt and 3/4 stretch tight size = 16 in the riff.

Elliott needs to realise he's coaching a Rugby League side not s soccer team.

Rugby League sides never kick the ball on the 2nd or 3rd tackle unless they see w good oppurtunity.

Now its either Elliotts fault for telling them to do this or Sammut's for having a brain snap which im sure he wouldnt have.

Elliott caused this for sure.

I do notice however that three of the greatest halfbacks in the past 20 years think graham should be in the side.

Question is who's opinion do I value more three legends of the game or a bloke who was never much more than an alright player?

Unfortunately for us that bloke who was never much more than average is our coach.
