Matty Johns on ACA

Well, I guess a lot of us would have seen it. What are the thoughts of the masses??

Me, I'm so torn it's not funny. Part of me feels desperately sorry for a bloke that has lost his career, his reputation, and a massive chunk of his life when he did not commit any crime whatsoever. I guess that statement depends or whether or not you believe his side of the story.. I do.

Another part of me dwells on the absolute stupidity of his actions. He has cheated on his beautiful, and obviously loyal and loving, wife, which in itself is a low act. He has also taken part in a degrading and humiliating act involving a 19 year old girl. I know that there is every chance that she consented to everything that happened, but I can't help but think that if a group of blokes did that to my 23 year old sister, or my 20 year old girlfriend, issues of consent would not stop me from hunting them down, slitting their throats and watching them bleed to death.

All I know is that I have a sick feeling in my stomach very similar to the one I had after Andrew's confession interview.

PS - I should add that Trisha Johns came across in that interview as an amazingly strong, loyal, and loving woman. Matt is very lucky to have her.

I think it appropriate to quote my good wife:

mrs macavity, 7:20pm, re school marm grimshaw: "f*ck her. f*ck her right up her fat arse"

god I love my wife.

Have not seen it yet, but I understand where you are coming from. On a side note, I observed two very loyal supporters on the 4 corners program the other night.....;-)

I believe Johns more than the girl.

I am just very sceptical of everything to be honest and even if it makes me a fool, I would trust John's word over hers any day of the week. I guess I'd say I don't really think the truth has been discovered at all really, but I believe Johns' account has more credibility and is probably closer to the real truth.

I just watched this interview and I have an opinion. I am going to keep it to myself because my opinion is based on my experience in working with people that have been in the situation that this particular woman found herself in.

I have, at times heard very similar stories to this one and both versions often make particular sense. The dynamics involved in these situations are extreme and I feel that unless you were faced with them yourself it would be hard to understand exactly what someone may feel or how they may react. I know that I don't understand it and in my work I see this everyday.

For this reason I find it better to reflect on this, rather then offer an excuse or reason for someones actions, this relates to both the "victim" and the alleged "perpetrator"

What I can tell you is there are no winners in these types of situations.

Matthew Johns will remain as one of the legends of the club...

however...unfortunately...he deserves all he gets. It is all pretty appalling. He appeared pretty humbled in the interview, however their actions that night are simply not good enough.

A very good question though...when are the other 11 (or so) going to have the guts to stand up and admit their involvement? If Matt is the only one to take a fall for this it will be pretty disgraceful...

I totally believe what Johns is saying... I mean there was a police investigation and nothing was wrong, sure all that group sex stuff is very very morally incorrect but he is the same Matty Johns he has been for the last 7 years who has been a champion bloke who has bought much laughter and joy to Australian homes.

All he did was have an affair... This treatment he is receiving is totally unfair... Sure he has wrong the Australian public with his behaviour but his wife has forgiven him and surely he has wronged his wife much more than he has wronged us... Seriously I do not know, noone could ever know why the woman has done what she has done but I think she has done the wrong thing... I am not saying Matty is innocent of everything but jeez what was her motive?

HOWEVER I truely believe the media is the most to blame... Why do they blow all this out of porpotion you know sensationalise everything and destroy a perfectly normal person? Do ratings matter so much that they'd even destory one of their own? Everyone makes mistakes and yes he deserves to be punished but noone deserves to be humiliated like that in public or on national tv. I hope everyone involved in making this such a big deal, who are making money off not only Matthew Johns', his families and friends' misery please go do everyone a favour and go f**k yourself...

I am acutally very upset you know? Jeez... Oh well best of luck Matty I really hope it all works out!

Why would they? Johns has been crucified. There is no gain for them, or the club if they come forward.

Its a shame, because it would be nice if they apologised for the incident, but I dont see it happening.

Exactly. The least they can do is grow some balls & step up to the plate and admit. Maybe they are gutless and unlike Matty didn't tell there wives/partners all them years ago.

Personally, I don't know what to make of it all. On one hand, we've got Matty saying the girl consented to everything, and was a "willing participant", and on the other hand, we've got a girl who says she didn't want any part in it and has taken seven years to come forward. Matt looked very remorseful in the interview, I know that much, and I do tend to believe his side of events, but there's just a small part of me that isn't too sure.

Also, did anyone else notice the wonderful words of wisdom Grimshaw left us with? "Matthew Johns is the one who is taking the heat, and rightly so". Now, if you'll excuse me, WHY is it "rightly so" that he's the one taking the heat. He wasn't the only one in the room that night ...

Whether she consented or not, a high profile rugby league star and his mates took advantage, degraded and humiliated a 19 your old girl, a teenager.

There is no excuse for that and he gets all he deserves.

You have summed up my sentiments pretty well mate. I am annoyed, and I feel sorry for mathew. I also cant abide by what happened there. To me, that stuff is so private that it revolts me to think about what those guys did. As Matt said, we all have skeletons in our closets, things we regret, things in our past that we wouldnt want brought up. In this case its come back to haunt him badly. Nothing to do other than get on with it.

My two main beefs with this is:-

1. Where is Brett Firman?

2. What good, decent aussie bloke, sits back and lets their team mate ( in this case Matthew Johns, who had sex with the girl consensually ), cop all the stick. Johns shouldn't have to name the players - being a snitch is about as low as it gets - however, to sit back and let Johns cop it from all angles, and ruin his life, while there's at least a half dozen blokes sitting at home knowing they are just as much to blame and are too gutless to step up themselves - is just about as unAustralian as it gets.

I find those 2 points completely appalling. Brett Firman was named as the other player who had consensual sex with her too. The fact he gets a free ride, with no focus whatsoever, is completely wrong.

And to the blokes who were his team mates who were there, having their turn in 2002, to sit back and let your mate cop all the flak in 2009, while being completely gutless, takes the cake.

With a gutless, selfish attitude like that, no wonder they haven't won a premiership.
