McGregor ready to make tough decisions

By MITCH JENNINGS

Aug. 25, 2014, 9:23 p.m.
RUGBY LEAGUE

Dragons coach Paul McGregor.

The Dragons are still clinging to hope of reaching the finals this year, but Paul McGregor admits plenty needs to change to become a premiership force again.
The Dragons boosted their playoffs hopes with a 34-6 win over the Titans at Kogarah on Sunday, just two days after the announcement that McGregor had signed a three-year deal to coach the club. Racking up 34 points for the second consecutive week helped their cause further, though, at -21, their points differential could yet return to haunt them.
McGregor insisted his priority is still getting the club to the finals this year, but said it was important he started to look towards 2015 and beyond - including potential forays into the recruitment market.
"We haven't made the finals yet and we're still continuing this year to try and do that. I don't want to jump at shadows, what I need to do is what I have been doing, which is working hard with the group I've got," McGregor said.
"But, to look to the future, I need to have a really good look at what needs to change.
"I haven't looked deep into the roster and the salary cap but that will be happening over the next month. But what I also need to do is have an in-depth look at our football department, right through from the juniors to the senior structure and once I do that I'll know what's next.
"Nothing can be taken for granted. If tough decisions need to be made for the future of this club, then I'm comfortable making those decisions."
While regular finals apperances are the obvious goal McGregor, just days into the long-term role, was loath to set himself specific targets.
"Certainly [finals] is where we want to be - that's where everyone wants to be - but I'm not going to commit to X, Y, Z," he said.
"We play in a tough competition and we've got a lot of good kids coming through and the team is at a development stage.
"What I am going to commit to is improving this football team and this club to get it back to where it needs to be."
While his rise from Illawarra Coal League premiership winner two years ago to NRL head coach appears a rapid one, McGregor said he will need to draw on two decades worth of experience in various playing and coaching roles to transform the club.

I will give McGregor this much, the players do want to play for him.

3 years is still ridiculous. I don't see how anyone can justify it.

They gave him 3 years in an attempt to create some certainty for him and the players.
If we get the spoon next year, he may well be shown the door. And his payout would be considerably less than a sheens or Henry.
That's the only rationale I can see regarding his 3 year contract.

That rationale sounds about right, but if he fails miserably like Price then surely Doust has to go which by the way won't happen too. I'm starting to like what I see with Mc Gregor he can certainly get the boys up to play and can get them to win the games they should win. The losses against the good teams like Manly and Roosters was not massive losses that can't be turned around.

It is interesting to note that since we are winning & playing good football the doom makers have gone quiet. Hope the boys can keep up the momentum & finish the season on a bright note even if they may happen to miss the playoffs.
Mary is doing a good job so let's get behind him & support his efforts. It's not too hard if you try.

Didn't you say the same thing at the start of the season about Price ?

Good luck living in your deluded world ,if you're happy with the way things are at this club at the moment, try looking at things the way they actually are not what you wish them to be .

This team has been unable to match it with any team that gives it to them in defense ,hence the losses against all of the higher teams on the table, then we play a few of the lesser quality teams in the comp and win and some are carrying on like we are superstars because they can beat those sides.
The game on the weekend -case in point- Titans were terrible but a lot choose to gloss over that MINOR detail.

LOL at making the finals ,what do you think we would do if on the almost impossible chance we scraped in there(as opposed to they MAY happen to miss the finals), we would be playing side 1 or 2 and the issue i outlined above comes into play and the fact is Mcgregor hasn't been able to get enough out of the side to defeat these sides .

there is some doom making for you ...... just so you know we are still alive

Just on finals the way these guys played for half of the year ,they don't deserve to play finals.

That statement alone from Mary surprises me. How long has he been at the Dragons and now admits he hasn't had a deep look at the roster or football department but will do so over the next month...the horse will have bolted by then. When he was appointed coach for 3 years didn't Doust say it was his clear vision and plans for the club that impressed the Board and persuaded them to appoint him as coach.

So you are saying that my comments are incorrect. If we play well people say its a bad opposition yet when we loose it's not how well the opposition played but how bad we were.
Mate get a life. You can't have it both ways.

100% correct

And when he has his deep look at all things ST GEORGE-ILLAWARRA will he draw on his extensive experience as a coach in the NRL ( all 13 games of it) to overhaul everything to his rigorous PROVEN standard.

In your initial post you said we are playing good footy, we are playing an improved version of what we played earlier in the season, but a long way away from being any sort of a threat to top sides, I wouldn't call it good.
Your comments above are correct, as i said we are only capable of beating sides who play poorly, and quite obviously when we lose against the top sides its commonsense that the opposition played better than us but also and that we played poorly otherwise we would win.

As i said in the other post your backing of PRICE hardly stands you as a good judge.

Lol. Who said I backed Price. All I kept saying early on that he should be given a chance without the doom makers coming on board . All right I was wrong but all you seem to do it continually have a bloody whinge even if we do play well.
Keep whinging son, it suits you as you don't know any other way.
No further comments. By me as I am about to board the plane on a return flight to Dragons territory.

Ah the old chestnut I'm a whinger because my view of the way things are at STGI doesn't match yours.

When i see some inroads into getting this team truly competitive again after watching 3 years of crap , i will be positive , but from what i see at the moment, that's still a long way to go, backed up by our spot on the ladder.

agree.
people must have been living in cave the last 3 years.. and along comes another rookie coach with marginally better than a 50/50 win loss record, and no big wins against top sides and people start thinking we are grand final contenders next season....

here is my opinion people:
1. we have another rookie coach untested under NRL pressure other than a handful of games.

2. we are about 4 - 5 players short of a team that can match it with the heavyweights of the comp.. (2 props, 1 back rower, 1 hooker, 1 centre)

3. we have inept management at the board level, with our CEO pushing for us to leave our home ground and become NRL nomads.. they are also far too slow to act when needed on crucial matters, relying on a "Fake" internal audit to justify their positions..

4. we have an inept marketing and promotional business unit

5. we have a "boys club" mentality in the board, keeping guys like Craig Young involved in the internal affairs.

so sorry to sound negative, but lets call it what it is, and look at how or if we can find a solution as supporters..

See you then !
