Just got back from seeing Ulcerate at the Stag, holy f**k, so ridiculously intense and heavy. The drummer in particular is not human, the blast beats he was paying were like an aural carpet bombing. Insane.

Best Australasian death metal act by some distance right now.

Cradle of Filths first album was my first foray into black metal, although they have turned into a bit of a joke, they were pretty good back then and had some decent production for a black metal band. Until then most if it sounded like it was recorded in a toilet and a the vocals done through one of those kids reverb microphones. Shame CoF are a joke these days.

The nasty production (when done right) can add to the atmosphere with good BM though. Darkthrone definitely know how to do it, as did Emperor early on (though their later stuff was well produced). Stuff like Abigor too.
