Luck locks in for two more years
Inspirational loose forward Micheal Luck has been re-signed by the Vodafone Warriors until the end of the 2012 NRL season.
Off contract at the end of this campaign, stand-in captain Luck (28) will now extend his association with the club to at least seven years after arriving in Auckland from the North Queensland Cowboys for the 2006 season.
This is definitely where I wanted to stay from the outset, he said.
It was a great move to come to Auckland in the first place and I couldnt be happier knowing Im staying here for two more years. Im really settled and enjoy the lifestyle and opportunities here.
Ive got belief in the Vodafone Warriors as a club and in my team-mates and our football staff.
I have huge confidence in Ivan (Cleary) as a coach. He has done a great job putting the right structures in place and with the staff he has given us the tools needed to do the job.
Weve had a rough patch lately but now its up to us as players to get the team heading in the right direction again.
Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said Lucks re-signing was critical to the clubs future.
Lucky is a terrific professional and a high-quality person. He epitomises what a club needs and were really fortunate to have someone like him at the Vodafone Warriors, he said.
Whether hes playing or training, he shirks nothing and he has the rare ability to play despite carrying injuries that would sideline others. His work-rate is unmatched and he places the highest value on what this club means to him.
Hes very coachable, a player whos constantly looking to improve every aspect of his game.
Off the field hes without peer. Whether hes working with younger players, helping out team-mates or doing community and media work, nothings too much for him. He also provides a great example with the commitment he has made to his university studies. In simple terms hes the ultimate club man.
In the second-round outing against Cronulla this year, Luck became the 17th player to appear in 100 NRL games for the Vodafone Warriors.
His first match since re-signing the 181st of his career will be Saturday nights 10th-round clash against his old North Queensland club, which he played for 76 times from 2001-2005.
Lucks durability was underlined in his first two seasons with the Vodafone Warriors when he appeared in all 50 matches. His run of consecutive appearances stretched to 70 before a shoulder injury sidelined him late in the 2008 season.
Despite missing two games that year he was the NRLs top tackler (957) for the second year on end after tallying 959 in 2007.
Named the Clubman of the Year in 2006 and 2007, Luck made an NRL record 74 tackles in the Vodafone Warriors 14-14 draw with Melbourne and also made 65 tackles in the 32-32 draw with Penrith, going on to top 1000 tackles for the season.
While he has missed two games so far this season through a hand injury, Luck has still made 245 tackles in six outings, an average of more than 40 a game.
