Luck locks in for two more years

Inspirational loose forward Micheal Luck has been re-signed by the Vodafone Warriors until the end of the 2012 NRL season.

Off contract at the end of this campaign, stand-in captain Luck (28) will now extend his association with the club to at least seven years after arriving in Auckland from the North Queensland Cowboys for the 2006 season.
“This is definitely where I wanted to stay from the outset,” he said.
“It was a great move to come to Auckland in the first place and I couldn’t be happier knowing I’m staying here for two more years. I’m really settled and enjoy the lifestyle and opportunities here.
“I’ve got belief in the Vodafone Warriors as a club and in my team-mates and our football staff.
“I have huge confidence in Ivan (Cleary) as a coach. He has done a great job putting the right structures in place and with the staff he has given us the tools needed to do the job.
“We’ve had a rough patch lately but now it’s up to us as players to get the team heading in the right direction again.”
Vodafone Warriors coach Ivan Cleary said Luck’s re-signing was critical to the club’s future.
“Lucky is a terrific professional and a high-quality person. He epitomises what a club needs and we’re really fortunate to have someone like him at the Vodafone Warriors,” he said.
“Whether he’s playing or training, he shirks nothing and he has the rare ability to play despite carrying injuries that would sideline others. His work-rate is unmatched and he places the highest value on what this club means to him.
“He’s very coachable, a player who’s constantly looking to improve every aspect of his game.
“Off the field he’s without peer. Whether he’s working with younger players, helping out team-mates or doing community and media work, nothing’s too much for him. He also provides a great example with the commitment he has made to his university studies. In simple terms he’s the ultimate club man.”
In the second-round outing against Cronulla this year, Luck became the 17th player to appear in 100 NRL games for the Vodafone Warriors.
His first match since re-signing – the 181st of his career – will be Saturday night’s 10th-round clash against his old North Queensland club, which he played for 76 times from 2001-2005.
Luck’s durability was underlined in his first two seasons with the Vodafone Warriors when he appeared in all 50 matches. His run of consecutive appearances stretched to 70 before a shoulder injury sidelined him late in the 2008 season.
Despite missing two games that year he was the NRL’s top tackler (957) for the second year on end after tallying 959 in 2007.
Named the Clubman of the Year in 2006 and 2007, Luck made an NRL record 74 tackles in the Vodafone Warriors’ 14-14 draw with Melbourne and also made 65 tackles in the 32-32 draw with Penrith, going on to top 1000 tackles for the season.
While he has missed two games so far this season through a hand injury, Luck has still made 245 tackles in six outings, an average of more than 40 a game.

Meh

Hopefully we don't resign Lillyman. Has played good football this year, but we can't carry both him and Luck

Something doesn't add up:

Luck
Steve Rapira
Mannering
Tai'i
Matulino
Lillyman
plus the young guys in the Vulcans and 20s
maybe Mateo or Blair

Bye bye Lillyman and possibly more

This gives us an indication of where the Warriors are heading for 20eleven.
I agree, I cannot see Lillyman staying now.

I guess a lot hinges on who is let go at Melbourne.
I still think Cleary should be released a year early and sign up Kearney.
He is bound to atract more players then Cleary. Blair, Manu to name some

Good point. We always go on about how hard it is to attract big names over the Tasman - I can imagine that gets harder when it comes to who is the coach.

Surely guys get into Kiwis camp and start saying 'gee, playing for Ivan isn't much fun...' and it spreads.

I agree Lillyman has to be gone now, article in The Australian newspaper states that Mateo likes the money and is virtually signed and Inu has agreed terms but just needs to find a time to sign. There is a thread about it on the Eels forum.

You have to think of it as 3 - 5 players rather then just three because the bench spots are important.

Confirmed signing
8 Rapira
9 Heremaia
10 Packer
11 Mannering
12 Luck
13 Rapira

r Back/ Hooker
r Prop
r Matulino
r Backrower/Prop

+Brown

Unconfirmed
Tai'i - Would be a cheap back-up
Lillyman - I don't think he will stay
Mateo - Sounds like he isn't coming
Blair - would be great buy can play Prop, Secondrow, Lock and Centre.
plus the young guys in the Vulcans and 20s

So there is room for a little movement.

Don't forget about Brown.

matulino is off contract too isn't he? That's what worries me, if we keep Luck and lose a guy like Matulino who may not be setting the world on fire now but has far more going for him than a one dimensional player like Luck.

I dunno, it just shows no signs of getting any better for the next couple of seasons.

If Luck had been deemed to be the replacement captain for Pricey, then I could have understood re-signing him.

Yeah thats a good point about Kearney and him being able to bring Melbourne players with him. I really cant believe the signing of Luck, hes the reason our forward pack lacks real punch. Hes so one dimensional, even the tackles he makes he doesnt smash people so therefore they get quick play the balls against us. I would be signing Tai quick hes got a big future, and Matalino and Lillyman are way better than Luck. I'm stoked with Inu and Mateo but id be targeting the best hooker we can, Heremia has done ok but to be a real threat for premierships we need a freak in that position, thats my 2 cents anyway.

I think there's a lot more wrong than Michael Luck in terms of go forward. I would love to see Matulino get to the level he was at 20s, but the structure just isn't allowing it. If the structure was better, and our backrowers were able to hit gaps and the little men wider, then guys like Luck are worth it in isolation. I guess Lilyman won't stay, which is no great shame. Lilyman is a turd version of Luck.

Haha what a mess, someone else apart from Lillyman must be going if we resigned Luck and now have got Mateo as well as Rapira.

Resigned Brownie aswel.

Maybe Lillyman gone, Royal gone

I wonder if someone is being groomed to become a prop?

Ta'ai wouldnt be bad.

Cleary may decide on an 80 min hooker.

I'm 50-50 on this...it means Lillyman is surely gone, and maybe even Matulino. Maybe going to another NRL side would be best for his development (as sad as that would be for me to stomach as a Warriors fan).

Prop is still a concern. We have Sam Rapira coming into his own after some indifferent seasons, and hopefully brother Steve can fill in the void.
