Mick Crawley joins Dragons as Coaching Advisor

To advise the coach I would imagine.

The question really, is whether or not Mary chooses to take said advice, or not.

Time will tell...

This is an interesting point Dragsters.

If he is there to 'advise' the coach/s then he must report to someone higher. If McGregor fails to hear or agree to the advice given, then surely there should be consequences. The flip side is of course the McGregor can use that against him if things go awry...."That advisor guy from North Queensland told me to do that". Double edged sword, unless the said advisor pre-positions his boss on what has been said, which becomes almost an infantile type of scenario.

The sad thing is when they renewed Mary's contract, how many of us can say we were actually surprised? Just read the below quote when they announced Johnston as CEO. I hate to bark on about this, but the below statement really summarises the club that we support and the renewing of Mary's contract is just an extension of this shit culture at the club.

""We had over 98 applicants, which was quite a surprise, but after shortlisting those we took a view that Brian Johnston's qualifications and experience, his passion for the Dragons will bring continuity and stability in governance and management," Doust said."

It is just absurd how completely wrong the above is:
- what qualifications and experience does Johnston even have? note when any management appointment is made for any public company, they then detail all the appointee's experience and qualifications.
- passion for dragons as a criteria?... non Dragons supporters need not apply. Why even measure this? how do you even test this? look at leading sporting clubs/teams globally. Is existing passion for the team a major item?
- continuity and stability in governance and management? - this is the worst part of the statement. a) stability in management? we are a club still living in the success of the 1950s-1960s with both on-field and off-field matters significantly different from yester-year. Additionally, wtf does it mean by "stability in governance"?? this part irks me the most. We have no f**king governance. It's jobs for the boys and nepotism and this "stability in governance" is just saying we are going to continue to treat you guys like shit.

Separately, it is also amusing that an article came out later saying that notwithstanding all the applicants etc. through a third party that they stopped that process and decided to hire Johnston. So it's just f**king misleading by saying they had 98 applicants when they cancelled the process as it's irrelevant and highly likely always intended. My thoughts are that they had always intended to hire him and just started that process so that they could say that they had X number of applicants but we thought Johnston was the right person.

Like with all matters decided at SGI, there was a backroom deal done with Johnston; 'Step down as chairman of the Board and we will appoint you as CEO'. With Doust moving aside as CEO SGI, he still retains the CEO position for St George Leagues Club. We need to say no more and should not be surprised with any decisions made by the management of SGI.

Doust replaced Johnson as CEO (1996 - 1999) due to health issues and has now returned. He was there when they merged. He does have experience and is a great man. He is not the problem. If you meet Brian you will see that he loves the club as much as we on this forum do. Brian can't just appoint whoever he wants, it goes through the board and they all make the decision. Brian should ask to bring back David Waite as he was the coach when he was CEO in those 3 years. He was one of my favourite coaches for the red V. Saints played good footy under him.

Cowboys extended Paul Green early after a good run and how is it going for them now? They have probably a better side than Saints yet are playing worse. Must be some sort of curse, that is don't extend the coaches contract till the end of the season because the moment you do mid season it goes to poo. In the Cowboys case they had the Bronco's sounding him out, where as Saints probably only had the Thirroul Butchers that would have been interested in Mary and they panicked........

Don't panic guys, our next premiership is due in 2040 under mastercoach Paul McGregor who has just signed a new 25 year extension to ensure continuity and stability at our great club. He will be ably assisted by the entire 2010 premiership squad in various positions covering the entire spectrum of support roles.

Interesting speculation, do you have any proof to back this up?

You are so right CP.
It really annoys the hell out me when I read stuff like this from the club.
''Passion'' for the club has really worked well in the coaching appointments in recent times:rolleyes:
As for the 98-''lol'' applicants, how many were actually interviewed?. I'd say none.

Lol the guy who attempted to merge us with Roosters and succeeded in joining us with Steelers is a great man and loves the club?!

You’re just taking the piss now.

Wan't that Carr ?
The joint venture with Illawarra should have been as it is now. St George - first grade and Illawarra - juniors. Such an arrangement would have been successful and remained in place today. At anytime, WIN Corp could have provided major sponsorship to St George and/or to Illawarra.

There's no way the Steelers would have copped that. There was massive pressure by the new NRL to force sides to merge and low & behold the Sydney superleague clubs were obviously exempt. If we didn't stitch a deal up with the Illawarra than another club would have and imagine how we would be now / As a clue look how the Leagues club has been run.

Illawarra were never a financially viable partner. For most of the joint venture, they found it very difficult to meet their financial commitments and had to borrow funds from WIN to stay a float.

If Illawarra did not want to be the Club that controlled junior clubs, then there was always the possibility they could have joined with Cronulla. Would have been a much better scenario for Saints; by now we would have control of both Illawarra and Cronulla clubs wait: was not that the very case in the early 60s?

Cronulla's position was never in jeopardy due to superleague affiliations so were not interested.
