Bit of chat and debate on this topic in a game thread, so thought it deserves a thread of its own

If you have to pick one of these chaps in your ODI side who would you pick and why? (though both id imagine would easily be in our all time greatest ODI side)

Id probably go Bevan in a whisker. He saved our asses countless times. Best man for when we are in deep trouble I have ever seen.

Both are excellent players in the 'finisher' role. Hussey is a continuation of the role in a one day team that Bevan had. Hussey's ability to hit the ball over the fence and rapidly accelerate at the end of innings batting first is something that he does better than Bevan. But I'd have Bevan over Hussey because Hussey's best efforts tend to be when batting first while Bevan was excellent setting up scores and chasing them.

Hussey is probably a better fielder than Bevan but Bevan is the better bowler.

Test cricket wise Hussey by a long way. Bevan didnt take his chances and should have developed his very promising bowling more.

I'd take Bevan, he saved our arses on countless occasions and was a big match player. And you could argue the bowling Bevan faced through most of his career was of a higher quality, the bats have improved by a long way the last 5 years and in the roped of boundaries and Huss has had quite an advantage. Both prob would make our best ever team though.

I think I sparked this debate. Bevan and Hussey are very similar, both can control the scoreboard, meaning if we need 100 runs at 4.7 runs an over they can both control our innings to ensure we get what we need. Bevan was better in a sense that he seemed to be able to get those hundred runs just in time, he paced the innings perfectly. Both are also supreme at running between the wickets turning ones into twos and twos into threes.

Hussey though has the added advantage of being able to tee off on the bowlers, Bevan didn't seem to have the ability to clear the rope on a regular basis, or he didn't feel he needed to. And in the field it is a no contest, Bevan had a weak arm and was usually hidden if possible while Hussey is a sublime fielder anywhere on the field.

To me that is why I would slightly go Hussey however I would probably pick both. I think in an ODI fielding is a big decision maker, if you can save 15-20 runs in the field yourself you may as well tack it onto your batting average.

Bevan is one of my favs and in a favourite all time XI in ODIs I would pick both. Tests are a no contest.

If you had to choose probably Bevan just because he has saved our ass on numerous occasions. Hussey has done it before but none really stick out in my head compared to Bevan.

Both very similar players, but Mussey is worth at least three runs an innings on account of being a much better fielder than Bevan.

That chase against New Zealand in 200? was just pure Bevan class.
