LOL, LOVE this thread.
As a young child having NFI about music... ffs i was into top40 sh*t etc etc... then Jet came along, i got into them... My first concert was Wolfmother at the Hordern, who i also loved at the time. I was instantly in awe of their live performance.
Since then i had a musical education, if you will, my interests are varied and diverse, my fav bands ranging from the likes of Sly & The Family Stone to Alice in Chains to Tool (just 3 off the top of my head)...
I saw Mike Patton play with the Fantomas in early 2009 opening for Serj Tankian (i think, don't know went to a few gigs round that time) - they were amazing. That voice has to rate highly in the all-time lists, and major props for their experimentation & organisation. I also saw Faith No More at this year's Soundwave and they managed to outclass a star studded line-up, it was a perfect live performance, full of energy, showmanship, precision rhythm and great tones.
I was also at the 2nd AC/DC show where i managed to catch Wolfmother's entire set. I was bored. Sure they played some of their usual stuff, but their gusto has been lost since the line-up change + their lack of quality really hit home hard (especially followed by the awesomeness of AC/DC.) Wolfmother are nothing to write home about. I wouldn't disrespect them purely due to their similarities in sound with past decades... more their music is a contemporary success in the same way the likes of Paramore send people into a frenzy - simplicity/catchiness without much musical integrity which is perfect for the average listener.
Mike Patton simply stated what many think already, i don't think there is anythign to be gained from questioning his qualifications for having an opinion.
