Contract talks no distraction for Dragons hooker

By MITCH JENNINGS
Feb. 10, 2016, 3 p.m.

DRAGONS rake Mitch Rein says being off-contract at season’s end isn’t playing on his mind as he enters his sixth NRL season.
Rein is one of several big-name players not yet on the Dragons books for 2017 including Benji Marshall, Ben Creagh and Joel Thompson who all appear likely to head into season with their futures up in the air.
Rein did his chances of earning a new deal no harm in 2015, producing a career-best season that bumped him up the pecking order as heir-apparent to NSW vice-captain Robbie Farah - who was linked to a move to the Dragons when facing an uncertain future at the Tigers - at Origin level.
It leaves the 25-year-old in no rush to settle his future with his main focus on producing top form come round one.
‘‘All the stuff about being off-contract I honestly haven’t even thought about that yet,’’ Rein said.
‘‘I’m not feeling any extra pressure at all. I’m just really comfortable with all the preparation I’ve done this preseason.
‘‘My main goal is just to play footy. I know everybody says that and it’s a bit of a cliche but it’s the truth.
‘‘I’ve been in the [same] position in the past and it’s out of my control.
‘‘There’s no point getting caught up and worried about that stuff.
‘‘They way to go about it is to stay as focused on the job and care-free as you can.
‘‘When you’re in a good head space that’s when you play good footy and I feel like I’m in a pretty good head space at the moment.
‘‘I felt like last year was a step in the right direction and I’m still only scratching the surface of my potential,’’ Rein said.
‘‘I want t keep building and getting better and better.’’
Rein had his first hitout for the year in the Dragons disappointing Auckland Nines campaign that saw them drop all three of their pool games.
He’s looking forward to a return to the 13-a-side format in Saturday’s Charity Shield.
‘‘It’s always a good first trial to have to test yourself out,’’ Rein said.
‘‘In years gone by neither side takes the game lightly at all. We’ve seen pretty close to full-strength sides the past couple of years.

‘‘Souths are a pretty big and powerful side and have been pretty successful the past couple of years. It’s always a good physical clash to start the year.

“It’s always tough the first couple of games with match fitness. It doesn’t matter how fit you are it’s always different when you start playing games.
‘‘It’s just something you’ve got go through, get out as many minutes as you can and build that [fitness] base.”

Is NSW hooking depth really that shallow?

Yeah pretty much. Rein is probably about fourth in line behind farah, ennis and peats. We might expect lichaa and cook or mcinnes to emerge but time will tell.

Let's rate Reins Game 0 - 10 in various aspects of his game.

Passing 4. Passes few and far between hit the mark. Many passes went to the wrong man and behind the players. Also passes far too hard. De Belin gave him a gob full.
Defence 6. If it was either Dean Young or Fein rabbits fullback would have been tackled in goal. Made some good front on tackles.
Line speed 0. Doesn't even exist in his game. Too slow.
General play around the ruck 2. Has no idea. A couple of nice switch of play.
Reading the game 2. How can he read the play when he continues to look behind rather than looking at the oppositions defence to see where the gaps are and to run the play there.
Kicking game 0. One kick went dead in goal.

Havilli and Cook made him look like a fool. No more excuses he has been given enough chances to improve. He now must go. If he is still in the make up of the squad we have no chance of making a dent in the 8.

Rein wasn't great but neither was a few others and well if you don't play well hopefully Mary makes a call and puts in the best performing players.

I just hope he comes good, because we have virtually no depth in the hooker position (after the axing of garvey, cook & king), Havili I dont mind, and he did some hitups but hes not going to be an 80min hooker with that build.

Rein and Mann I thought played like blokes under a lot of pressure for their position.. which ofcourse there is lol.. but it forced errors.

Funny people wanted Garvey gone after his off field antics.

King was injury prone and couldn't even string 2 games toegther.

Cook got a better off and he took it and didn't even get any first grade till the end of his stay at the Dogs.

If Rein doesn't improve he might be moved on also.

Lol !

The speed of service wasn't great.

Compared to last year his passing has improved.

Seems each time Saints put in an average/poor display Rein is one of the whipping boys.

Benji was not exactly grease lightning either yet we know that about half of try assists last year came from his play.

Lets reserve judgment till we have played a few rounds for competition points shall we ?

Its a long list of whipping boys are you know whats funny most are Illawarra born players go figure.

One of the poster boys for the whipping club Ben Hornby the guy who would never lead the club to a GF let alone win it.

Ok let's.

It's just frustrating seeing him dish up shit ball from dh. I can excuse his and the others games being rusty but fmd I hope he can get it right. A teams go forward is SO influenced by the quality of ball from the hooker.

Rein is tough and solid defender. His issues are his passing and his decision making...between the both of them he kills us. You can work on your passing but im afraid the decision making is way beyond him.

He isnt the sole reason behind our troubles in attack....but he contributes quite a bit. I for one would love to see him gone.
