More money for EAS

One thing that could be done is the lower bays of the Andrew Johns stand could become the new general admission area at a minimum price and the hills could be closed except for big games - that would give us maybe 25-28k capacity with all the stands full for normal club games, and 40k capacity for a test match or SOO with 12-15k on the hills.

surely the majority of the AJ stand has to be GA

simple way to get bigger crowds is to reduce the prices - esp of the "less desirable" tickets.

if we have 40k capacity, we should have 2 levels of GA - hill for say $10 and the end bays of the AJ for say $15

introduce more people to a day at the footy, has to be a good thing.

It sounds good, but i can't see us averageing over 25k any time soon - and the thing is the club has to get the gate takings up more than it needs to get the crowd up. Crowd looks good in the papers and on TV, but the dollars on the balance sheet are what really counts.
I say when we have enough seats for normal games we just sell seats, because full hills and empty stands would look ordinary on TV.
I look forward to getting a seat in the new eastern stand and not looking into the sun ever again.

keep the "premium" seats at the same price. they always sell anyway

but if 5,000 buy $10 tickets and 10,000 buy $15 tickets

and only 6,000 would have bought GA at $20

that is an extra $80k per game...

(I realise actual figures will vary...)

add to that the fact that more bums on seats means more beers, pies, caps, etc sold...

I'm sure the club will do surveys and come up with the right answer, but i really think we have to wring the same or more dollars out of 25k people average over roughly 20k now. I'd be surprized if they find more.

GA for lower Andrew Johns stand will encourage early starters to ge quality seating.

I have noticed lately that the ground fills up in the last ten minutes.

Would be good to see a resonable crowd for the prelim games.

fans have gotten complacent since the AJ stand was built. that carries on to atmosphere at the games.

RE: atmosphere at the games - is it just me or was there a rather subdued atmosphere at the Tigers game?

I heard that the capacity, once completed, would actually be 40,000

$20 million for Newcastle stadium

May 27, 2008
NEWCASTLE'S NRL and A-League teams have received a boost with the NSW Government granting a further $20 million to redevelop and upgrade EnergyAustralia Stadium.
The three-stage development will modernised the dated stadium facilities and replace the existing western grandstand, increasing the crowd capacity from 33,000 to 40,000 by the end of 2010.

Newcastle NRL club chief executive Steve Burraston said the facelift will bring Newcastle's stadium to a world-class standard.

"This will put Newcastle on the map as a world class sporting and entertainment venue," Burraston said.

"In a time when rugby league clubs are struggling to survive the new stadium will give us an opportunity to sell better seating and corporate facilities to a larger audience and assist with our longevity.

"This puts us in the same league as the likes of the Broncos who have Suncorp Stadium or the Titans who have Skilled Stadium."

Construction has already begun on stage one of the developments, with stages two and three to continue through until the end of 2010.

As quoted by Foxsports.com

Morris pledged a further $20million today, that goes with the $10Million last year. Ground capacity will be 33,000 when it's completed.

EAS has certainly come a long way since I played soccer there in 1987 for Wallsend Under 18's. I can still remember all the earth works that were going on to turn it from an oval into a league ground. I don't think the old change rooms have changed much though

Does anyone have any links to the plans, drawings or artists impressions etc? I wouldn't mind getting a visual of how it all might look once it's finished.

the knights... and to a similar extent rugby league in general... need to be made "cool" again in newcastle before we fill a 40k seater. the towns youth - in terms of percentages - seems to be abandoning the knights. there were 2 people (myself included) in my class at school in newcastle that supported the knights. 2 out of 50 - or 4% if you like.

the team needs to do the job on the park - and the marketing team need to come out with something more than just appealing to the "old boys" fans. the entertainment at half time and pre-game is an absolute - 100% total joke. we need to involve the youth of newcastle in the knights in a greater capacity.

its strange to see conflicting stories regarding the capacity once finished.

im sticking with the Heralds quote of 33,000.

Which Herald? The parent paper is saying 40,000 ;)

Seriously...what is the point of bumping up the size to 33,000 people of a growing area? The stadium will (god willing) be too small in a decade or so...

Lets just hope they don't jack up the ticket prices. I'm going to the Titans game in August and the prices for the best tickets are $55, then you add on another $5 for the booking fee. I don't know how people can afford to go there week in, week out.

From the Knights website:
A three-stage development will see a state of the art grandstand replace the existing Western Grandstand, raising the ground capacity to 33,000 and up to 40,000 with temporary seating on each hill.
