The record is currently held by Tahu - 21 tries in 2002.

Uate hit 20 yesterday.

I predict 26 for the season.

Put him at fullback please.
He would be an absolute sensation.

A year ago I would've said no way in the world.

Now, I'd say...not yet. It's a matter of seeing how much he develops, as a leader and a ballplayer. He probably won't ever.

Please, he barely knows how to read the defence out on the wing. How do you think he'd go directing the ruck from fullback?

He has a looooooooooong way to go before we put him back there in the NRL

sadly, with my quote in yosh's sig... things like "forever" and "never"... well those are long periods of time.

i'll still put my hand up if in 5 or 6 years time if Aku is actually football smart enough to play fullback, and does so with aplomb. the thing is it's really going to take him that sort of time to even get close. hopefully by then everyone has forgotten about me and my bold, blanket statements.

... and no, i'm not back-peddling one iota. Aku isn't even remotely close to playing fullback well at the moment. there is so much more to our game than running at gaps and scoring tries, yet it seems that's all anyone sees or cares about. i really don't see a bloke with Aku's personality EVER being a fullback, he's not assertive enough. he's not going to scream at his team-mates, he's not going to be an alpha male on the field. he is a show pony, and i mean that in the best possible way, because he has every right to be. he's that good at what he does do well. that is not to say he doesn't have heart, or isn't a competitor either. his workrate doing the tough stuff this year is a testament to his work ethic. he's just not a leader or a strategist... or a ball player. he's the kind of bloke that will always play for himself (as evidenced in part with him stealing doogs try on the weekend), and i hope that never changes... because he will always be at maximum potency on the wing with that attitude and his natural, god given gifts.

I think it's just the dream that Hayne's running game at fullback...would be nowhere near what Aku's could be.

But of course, Hayne is ahead of him in every other facet of the game.

I'm pretty happy with him right where he is though to be honest.

exactly. spot on.

he's not just the next Lote Tuqiri... he's looking to be something much more special than that on the wing. why change a damn thing? when you can influence matches to the degree he does playing wing, just find another bloody fullback!

i think you're right JM, people just get caught up in the romance of imagining Aku running off the hips of the playmakers and whatnot, and give nary a thought to every other aspect of football.

im happy to see him stay on the wing, but he needs to go looking in the middle for offloads etc.

Blacklock was a specialist at that- you'd never see him sitting out on the wing all game waiting for the ball to come his way.

And how good was it seeing Kidley kicking the ball through for Aku's try. Brought back memories of the O'Davis/Albert "M&Ms" set play from the scrum.

indeed. not enough kicks off scrums... any team with notable speedsters should do it far more often. i think Joey did it for Tahu and/or Albert a few times over the years. to be honest of all the times i've seen it, i've only seen it fail once or twice. obviously you can't overuse it... but keeping it in your arsenal for when you need it has always been a very obvious idea for mine.

A couple of years ago the only way our reserve grade team could score a try was Walsh kicking for Uate.
Worked like a charm, over and over and over.

I do agree he is a winger senstation and I am happy to see him there for a while. HOWEVER in the future I think he'd go alright at fullback.

I'll have my sig Pers until Aku dies ^^

i just realised that i didn't say "never" in your sig, and that in actual fact the context of the post was in the present... but hey, i'm happy to stick by it for the long term. as i said, things arn't going to change any time soon.

What Perverse said through the entire thread x2 for me.

1. I think Uate is the perfect winger and he can stay there. Hoping and Waiting for his Origin eligibility.

2. I'm not sure why Halves don't kick for wingers off scrum play. Literally after every scrum, the far winger is flat footed on his line. With someone like Uate, K Gordon, B Morris on your wings, a kick IMO is the perfect option, especially if you are in their 50m zone.

I am so over all this talk of Uate being too stupid to learn.

The only difference between him this year and last year is that he is now confident - and he could be confident at fullback if people didn't constantly talk him down.

Last year he had Smith talking him down big time - this year Stone only talks him down a bit. If he had a coach like Bellamy or Bennett who would talk him up he could be anything in any position.

Aku's killing it on the wing, Gidley's killing it at fullback. Maybe a few years down the track when there's an opportunity for him Aku can have a crack there but right now there's no need to try and take a brilliant winger and turn him into an average fullback.

I'm sorry but the ones saying he is a sh*t fullback can get stuffed. How can you say that before even seeing how he performs there? You never know he may be even better there.

I believe Roopy said in his last season of reserves he played some games at fullback and did pretty well
