STP - no idea why they didn't get the acclaim of say Nirvana and Pearl Jam (to list some contemporaries)

Smashing Pumpkins - Gish, Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie are three fricking awesome albums...... - I know some rate them and they had a few hits, but I don't think people generally appreciate the number of awesome songs they made.

I agree - STP were better than both, but like Alice in Chains with Layne, they suffered from Scott Weiland's drug problems

which one sang Rooster?
top song that one.

I reckon they were too similar to be around at the same time from the same town.
Even the singers looked alike.

Maybe that was why neither really made it as big as Pearl Jam and Nirvana.
I dunno.

That was AIC.

I don't think they were similar at all. AIC were grunge, STP weren't really. Close but not quite grunge in my opinion.

Both quality bands though, two of the best.

nirvana and soundgarden were the 2 best imo, with chains and pearl jam just behind, then daylight then the rest.

One of my biggest regrets is that i never got to see STP play live......they were meant to come here so many times bt scott was always on smack. Purple was the first album is ever bought and is still one of my all time favorite records!

Great post!! speak for many!

STP were easily one of the most talented groups to emerge outta the early 90's. For a band of great songwriting abilities, musicianship etc they really didn't get the accolades they deserved, however self infliction played a part.

Big Empty is my favourite song, just a great slow to heavy melody.

Also saw SP play twice at the Horden, first concert was awesome, second average...however Mellon Collie is fantastic work, real work of art.

Soundgardens SuperUnkown album sh*ts on any Nirvana album imo. I like Nevermind but Superunknown i love.

AIC are cool though.

STP's Core album sh*ts all over anything nirvana done imo.

Soundgardens Badmotorfinger was also a great album, how good is jesus christ pose and Outshined :D

Pearl jams Ten is a good piece of rock.

Alice in Chains Facelift rules over all of the above, Sea of sorrow, man in the box and we die young are all classics!

I'd have to agree with pretty much everything thats being said, STP and Soundgarden we're massively underated. SuperUnknown and Core we're both awesome Albums.

But i'm a fan from most of them bands from that era, I think Nirvana we're rated higher mainly because smells like teen spirit. Once that song was released they just became massive and they we're righly or wrongly credited with creating Grunge.

Mudhoney were around long before the so called grunge evolution took place.

I remember seeing them at bondi beach in 91, they were headlining with hard ons, hellmen and massappeal( i think).

I dont know a great deal about Mudhoney's recorded works but I read somewhere that they recorded most of their work at home on a four track with much success with their following, when they recorded an album with a full studio production, it failed miserably.
Just some useless trivia, it could be wrong though not sure.

Yeah they were to grunge what Sabbath were to metal.

Nirvana were largely responsible for making the genre popular but they were one of the later bands to come along and basically capitalised on the earlier work done by Soundgarden, Mother Love Bone etc.

AIC were, to me, the most proficient of the "grunge" bands given that Soundgarden were part of that Seattle scene but weren't exactly grunge.

Has anyone listened to Mad Season's Above?

saw them play the entertainment centre on the adore tour

best percussion set up ever - i can still remember the 15min drum solo as interval - mind blowing stuff.

the whole concert rivals TOOL (lateralus tour) for my all-time-fave, just ahead of NIN and Tea Party (another underrated band)....

im a bit of an SP tragic - although adore / machina were very disappointing...
