I know he was an artist but music wise im not sure what he done, something to do with Frank Zappa me thinks

Correct, It's Beefheart.

He was the singer/main guy of the 'Magic Band' untill the early 80's when he broke it up and became an artist. Collaborated with Zappa a few times.
