the bullshit manipulation via the media is what pissed me off through the Lyon saga .... raaaay and those knobs on 2GB (or were they 2UE at the time) used it as part of the I hate brian smith vendetta and never once did the little twat lyon ever front up and dispell any of the rubbish they were spinning to try and get him to manly

fitzy was a tool but good on him for standing his ground in this one .... fitzy might have been a first rate arse, but he had some balls and knew how to weild a bit of power

bart, rest assured there was a hidden player in the whole saga and that's Noel Cleal, he was all over it like a rash.
I don't know what Cleal did or didn't do at the time, so I'll leave that discussion for another time. But I can in a way understand each step of what Jamie did while he was under contract to us, and can understand why the club agreed to each step and kept him out of the NRL for any other club for the term of his contract.

Not as bad as SBW but still a grubby and low act that had significant flow on effects for our club at the time.
I don't see it as one "act", which is why I can't call it grubby. He went home and played there for a year and then was ready to play big time again but the club made sure it wasn't in NRL until his Eels contract was up. That Cleal was working for Manly by that time might have made the end result predictable, but the club controlled and approved Lyon's choices up until that end.

It did of course impact on our recruitment choices - as any player going walkabout after Round 1 would, but as the story goes BS was just as much to blame for that with the nature of his alleged dressing room comments. I'm a fan of BS's coaching style over his time with us, but his man management was lacking and the way he left early potentially set us up for some troubled times.

FMD is pisses me off just how precious some players can get.....if you get criticised , don't take your ball home and sulk , man up[ , show some balls and prove your detractor wrong.

Well SBW on debut gave a international in Lyon a bath that day and he deserved a spray IMO. If he couldn't handle it than maybe he needed to leave and go back to hunting pigs.

A question for those who have read Hindy's book (apologies if it's already been mentioned):-

What does he say about Jamie Judas Lyon walking out on the club ?

Lyon leaving actually helped set us up for 2005 because it freed up cap space. At the end of the day its a shame, but we haven't missed him that much.

I disagree, he was a special talent and a player I'd have love to kept at the club.

Sure he was special, but Tahu was also great and we were well served by Ben Smith, Joel Reddy and Inu at different stages.

I hate the bloke but he is a premiership winning player and a premiership winning captain. He's is a better player then any of the centres that have been at the club since his betrayal. Any club would have been better with him in their team then without him.

Yes Lyon is a premiership winner, but would we have been able to have him and Jarryd Hayne in the same backline? Remember, that but for the cheating Storm, Jarryd would have won us a premiership in '09. It happened, it hurt at the time, but I don't think it cost us anything between 2005-2009. Tim Smith being unwell has cost us way, way more. Not that I blame him either.

How many premierships did we win between 2005-2009? Manly don't have any problems fitting Lyon, B Stewart. G Stewart, Cherry-Evans, Foran, Watmough, Matai, Kite, King etc.... in the same team. Not only did we lose Lyon but because of him we also lost Tonga during his best years. He also went on to be a regular Origin and Test player and won a premiership. Tim Smith... please....

Jamie Lyon is a player that benefits (moreso then others) by being in a successful team. I don't think he would have made a significant difference to our sides up until 07.

Makes sense. When his team goes bad in a match he really disappears. And I guess hence why he doesn't wanna play for blues. He just hates playing in a side that has to fight

There was actually an article in which Lyon said his reason for retiring from rep footy was because people criticised his selection when he came back from England.
