Worst case scenario is the knights have had their 5 million dollar debt wiped and get $20m bank guarantee, then the members buy the club for $1. This worse case is better than what the knights have had for 25 years and still has us in a better position then almost every other club

You'd think the supporters would be delighted and wishing him go bust.

Let some fatty own the club for not even 2 years, clear the debt and leave a nice 20m parting gift. Genius Tew.

Not Rothfield's word. Knights players, their managers, hell even the NRL.

"We've all got mortgages and bills that are due on pay day or the following day.

"We always get paid on the 15th and when it wasn't in our accounts on Monday, a few boys panicked and rang their managers.

"All we're asking is to be paid on time."

NRL acting CEO Shane Mattiske spoke to the Knights CEO Matt Gidley about the situation yesterday.

"They've told us it was a clerical error," Mattiske said.

"There was a timing issue but we've received assurances that the payments have now been made.

"We're watching the Knights closely as we do with all clubs."

Veteran player manager Wayne Beavis phoned the Knights on Monday afternoon when it was discovered one of his players hadn't been paid.

"I told them they had until 2pm today (Tuesday)," Beavis said.

"A lot of the players have direct debits on their accounts.

"If the money's not there and they don't have an overdraft it will be knocked back.

"They get charged penalty interest and fees. I can assure you it's not all beer and skittles."

Being serious, what a ridiculous non-issue?

Is Rothfield going to enquire with each club about paydays for each player or staff member?

Talk about nosy.

as I wrote in another thread, while the ARLC does not provide any viable means for continuous exposure between now and December - such as regulating the player transfer market so it happens at the end of the year rather than the current all year long free for all - rugby league and sports journos are going to spend their time trying to find a story in anything and milk it for what it's worth. negative and sensationalised stories get more attention. no one gives a shit in puff pieces. besides it's too early to write up a story about how so and so is training the house down.

implementing such a thing extends the opportunity for league exposure. the NFL do it. games inc pre-season are played from August to February, but then there is Free Agency and trading that begins in March, the draft that in April, min-camps in May, training camps in July, etc. there's year long exposure for the league. the NBA do it, AFL do it, european football leagues do it. im not saying that the NRL needs a draft, but a regulated transfer period should be a priority, particular with the new rights deal and more money within the game.

an opportunity for the ARLC to maintain exposure for the NRL competition is lost and this period til the end of the year becomes a wasteland for the league. There is still a focus for media organisations to drum up stories because they need rugby league content - circulation and website hits decrease during this period. The ARLC aren't dong themselves a favour by shutting up shop the way they do.

I do adore a good crisis.

What's next? An epidemic of players not pulling up their socks? Actually, I thought JT's advertisement of Skins™ in lieu of his Aussie uniform was in pretty poor taste on the weekend. Surely the ARLC has to step in. Maybe they can get him to get those incredibly homosexual angel wings removed.

Dont leave Bobby D out either JD

"Quick, look over there at the Knights in crisis. If you do, maybe no one will notice just how irrelevant the Raiders have been over the last 10+ years"

Knights clarify rumour, re: player payments

Following the Newcastle Knights’ statement earlier today (Tuesday 16/10/2012), the Club confirms all players and staff have been paid on time.

It is unfortunate the rumour today, which the Club believes has come from a disgruntled player who was not re-signed for next season, has caused considerable speculation.
...
The Clubs players, coaches and staff are all looking forward to next season and beyond under the ownership of Nathan Tinkler and the Hunter Sports Group.

As captain Kurt Gidley tweeted earlier today, “I have never doubted for ONE second what Nathan Tinkler has done & is doing for our great club & town! His passion & commitment absolutely 2nd to none. I feel proud & excited to be a current player at the @NRLKnights under his ownership!”

@buzzrothfield I must have missed out on the "business class airfares" & "five star luxury trip"?First I've heard of it. Which players went?

Phil Rothfield @BuzzRothfield said:
@kurt_gidley Why, is it a salary cap problem? You saying you didn't get a call from the big guy offering trip to Bali? Not what I hear.

Rothfield really is aching for something to be awry at the Knights.

It was probably Joel Edwards, I'd be bitter if I had to play for Canberra, just like the fans who support them.
